Amid ongoing rumors about Max Verstappen's potential switch to Mercedes, Nelson Piquet Jr., the brother of Verstappen's partner Kelly Piquet, has made a bombshell revelation about Verstappen's Mercedes links.
Speculation about the Dutch driver's Mercedes move began after George Russell admitted that his Mercedes contract extension was on hold due to the team's ongoing talks with Verstappen.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the link but revealed that Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli will likely form the team's 2026 driver lineup. However, he didn't shy away from saying that Verstappen was definitely a priority option for the long-term future.

The likelihood of the four-time world champion's interest in Mercedes is high, given the challenges at Red Bull. The team has been struggling with the car since mid-2024, a stark contrast to 2023's dominant performance when Verstappen won 19 out of the 22 races.

Max Verstappen of Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing walks in pit lane with George Russell of Great Britain and Mercedes during qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari on May 17, 2025 in Imola, Italy. MoreApart from the challenges with the RB21 F1 car, Red Bull is developing its own power units for the 2026 car in collaboration with Ford under the Red Bull Powertrains banner. However, with no proven track record of making powerful and reliable engines, Red Bull has a heavy weight on its shoulders, and Verstappen's confidence in the team's technical prowess is yet to be known.
Especially after the sudden exit of former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who was replaced by former Racing Bulls team boss Laurent Mekies last week. Piquet Jr. spoke on the Pelas Pista podcast after the British Grand Prix, revealing that Verstappen will be at Mercedes next year. Addressing the disappointing weekend for Mercedes at Silverstone, he said:
"Who knows next year, with Max there..."
Podcast host Thiago Alves couldn't believe what he had heard. Piquet Jr. then revealed further insider details. He said:
"They are talking, everyone knows right?
"Just missing final contract details, but everyone knows that it's an option. They are talking."
Piquet Jr. then revealed that Verstappen is expected to make a decision about his Mercedes move by this August. He said:
"Until August, he needs to have made a decision, they will either get the final details right or not. But I think it would be pretty cool."
When Alves asked him if it was cool if he switched or if he stayed, Piquet Jr. said:
"To switch."
We should take this with a huge pinch of salt, but interesting to hear this from a family member.

BMW Vs. Mercedes U.S. Sales Race: There's A Clear Leader In 2025
BMW Vs. Mercedes U.S. Sales Race: There's A Clear Leader In 2025 originally appeared on Autoblog. With the first half of the year behind us, we have a clearer idea of which manufacturers are leading the 2025 sales race and which ones are struggling. In the luxury segment, we already know that BMW is crushing Audi; the former sold twice as many cars as its rival in the first six months. But what about Mercedes-Benz? We've had to wait a bit longer for Mercedes to post sales, but now it has. While it is performing much better than Audi, Mercedes sales are down in the United States relative to last year, and it's some way off of BMW's numbers. Let's take a closer the USA alone, Mercedes has sold 142,000 cars in the first half of the year, a drop of 6% year-on-year. By comparison, BMW sold 178,499 units and saw a 1.6% increase in sales over the same period. Audi is in a distant third spot, notching up 81,951 units, a drop of 12%. BMW, therefore, is the only one of the three that has been able to grow this year. In terms of van sales in the USA, Mercedes has sold 15,700 of those so far in 2025, a massive 42% drop. "Overall, we see good customer demand in the U.S. and Germany for our products including our Top-End vehicles, despite tariffs impacting our global sales in the second quarter,' said Mathias Geisen, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes Benz Group AG. Marketing & Sales. It was a better Q2 for Mercedes USA, though, with 74,600 cars sold, an increase of 11% compared to Q1 2025. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article Unlike BMW and Audi, Mercedes-Benz does not report individual sales per model. The brand only provides broader insights and sales figures, so a direct comparison with its rivals is tricky. The manufacturer pointed out that demand for its top-end models was strong, but did not go into more detail about how much each model sold. This segment includes models like the Mercedes-Maybach S, S-Class, EQS, G-Class, EQS SUV, and high-performance Mercedes-AMG models. Competing models from BMW, such as the 7 Series and X7, are both up in sales in 2025. Mercedes' top-selling car globally is still the GLC, while its stylish new CLE is selling strongly globally, too. Plug-in hybrid sales were up 34% globally in Q2, and in Europe, the share of electrified models hit 40%. Still, Mercedes is 36,499 models adrift of BMW in the first six months in the USA, and at this rate, it's unlikely to steal the luxury crown back from BMW. A lot can happen in six months, though, so we'll keep on eye on how these brands weather the tariff storm. BMW Vs. Tesla to sell Model Y cars in India, starting at $69,770
Tech billionaire Elon Musk's Tesla has priced its Model Y at about $69,770 in India, the highest among major markets, its website showed, as the electric carmaker geared up to open its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday. With delivery estimated to start from the third quarter, Tesla will drive on to India's busy roads, targeting a niche premium EV segment that accounts for just 4% of overall sales in the world's third-largest car market. It will compete mainly with German luxury giants such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, rather than domestic mass-market EV players such as Tata Motors and Mahindra. Tesla's Model Y rear-wheel drive will set back buyers 6 million rupees ($70,000), while its Model Y long-range rear-wheel drive costs 6.8 million. That compares with a starting price from $44,990 in the United States, 263,500 yuan ($36,700) in China, and 45,970 euros ($53,700) in Germany. Grappling with excess capacity in global factories and declining sales, Tesla has adopted a strategy of selling imported vehicles in India, despite duties and levies running into roughly 70%. On Tuesday, police guarded Tesla's first showroom in India as media crowded outside the office complex where it is located and the chief minister of the western state of Maharashtra, home to the Indian commercial capital, arrived for the launch. Inside the showroom clad in Tesla's signature minimalist neutral tones, the Model Y was draped under black and grey covers, partially visible through the glass. Access was tightly regulated, with no sign of fans or onlookers nearby. Tesla's website showed the Model Y available for registration in Mumbai at an on-road price of 6.1 million rupees, with a booking deposit of 22,220 rupees. The firm's Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability is on offer at an additional cost of 600,000 rupees, with future updates promised to enable operation with minimal driver intervention. While the current features require active driver supervision and are not fully autonomous, Tesla says the system will evolve through over-the-air software updates.

The 2026 Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake Is the Antidote to Luxury SUVs
Crossovers and SUVs may have taken over, but Mercedes insists there's still room in the luxury segment for a good ol' wagon. The CLA lives to see a next-generation model and retains the naming misdemeanor by carrying the Shooting Brake moniker once again. It has too many doors to be a true shooting brake, but nevertheless, we're glad the long-roof model soldiers on for a third iteration. Up to the B-pillars, it's identical to the CLA 'coupe,' retaining the unibrow look if you spring for the optional light strip. Instead of a traditional grille, it gets a black panel with 142 illuminated three-pointed stars. Mercedes was able to forgo the front grille because there's no engine under the hood that requires cooling. Yes, this is a fully electric CLA Shooting Brake. However, a mild-hybrid model with a gas engine is also planned. Photo by: Mercedes-Benz Although we're not enamored with the car's profile, we'd still prefer the extended CLA over the GLA crossover. Mercedes is stretching the definition of a compact car by making the new wagon even bigger than its predecessor. At 185.9 inches (4723 millimeters) long, 73 in (1855 mm) wide, and 57.8 in (1469 mm) tall, it's 1.3 in (35 mm) longer, 1 in (25 mm) wider, and 1.1 in (27 mm) taller than before. Additionally, the wheelbase has been elongated by 2.4 in (61 mm) to 109.8 in (2790 mm). Weight isn't mentioned, but it's undoubtedly a porker. The dual-motor CLA sedan weighs 4,706 pounds (2,135 kilograms) , and logic suggests that the equivalent wagon will be slightly heavier due to its larger format. Despite being a bigger car than the model it replaces, the 2026 CLA Shooting Brake is actually less practical in the back, presumably due to the batteries. Cargo volume with the rear seats in place drops by 1 cubic foot (30 liters) to 16 cubic feet (455 liters). Fold down the 40:20:40-split bench and the number grows to 45.5 cubic feet (1,290 liters), or 2.1 cubic feet (60 liters) less than its predecessor. However, Mercedes compensates for the downgraded rear cargo compartment by adding a front trunk that accommodates 3.5 cubic feet (101 liters). Making the most of the extended roof is a massive, one-piece panoramic glass panel stretching from the windscreen frame all the way to the black rear spoiler. Even on a hot summer day, the interior won't feel like a sauna, thanks to the CLA Shooting Brake's heat-insulating laminated safety glass featuring an infrared-reflecting and low-emissivity (LowE) coating on the inside. The latter also pays dividends in winter by reducing heat loss. The panoramic glass roof is illuminated by 158 stars embedded in the glass surface, color-coordinated with the ambient lighting. Photo by: Mercedes-Benz A growing trend among cars is to offer a dimmable panoramic roof. Mercedes allows you to switch from opaque to transparent in 10–20 milliseconds, but requires you to use the infotainment system. As with the regular CLA, the Shooting Brake is all about displays, combining a 14-inch touchscreen with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Customers can pay extra to add a 14-inch display for the front passenger. Without it, that section of the dashboard contains backlit stars because you apparently can't have enough of those. An optional head-up display is also offered. Mercedes intends to initially sell the CLA Shooting Brake in 250+ and 300 4Matic electric flavors. Both share a nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack with an 85-kWh usable energy content. The former can travel 473 miles (761 kilometers) on a single charge, while the latter can cover 454 miles (730 kilometers). If you're running low on battery juice, DC charging for 10 minutes at 320 kW will enable 193 miles (310 kilometers) of range for the CLA 250+ and 186 miles (300 kilometers) for the CLA 300 4Matic. The single-motor variant offers 268 horsepower and 247 pound-feet (335 Newton-meters) of torque, good for 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h). Step up to the all-wheel-drive variant, and Mercedes will reward you with 349 hp and 380 lb-ft (515 Nm). The extra oomph cuts the sprint time to five seconds flat, but the top speed remains unchanged. 2026 Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake 10 Source: Mercedes-Benz These two electric versions will be the first to hit Europe in March 2026, when additional EV variants will join the lineup. Around the same time, a cheaper mild-hybrid featuring a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine will launch as well. It'll be powered by a transversely mounted M252 four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It should mirror the CLA sedan by coming in both front- and all-wheel-drive configurations and two outputs. We're asking Mercedes-Benz USA whether the CLA Shooting Brake is coming to North America, but we're not holding our breath, seeing as how the previous two generations were forbidden fruits. In other markets where it will be sold, this car won't have any direct rivals to worry about. BMW doesn't sell a 2 Series wagon, Audi won't bring an A3 Avant to market, and the Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake was discontinued at the beginning of the year. The only adversary potentially on the horizon is the rumored i3 Touring , but BMW hasn't confirmed it yet.
