Four charged in Singapore after ‘spiritual' scam leaves victim with bag of leaves

SINGAPORE, June 7 — Four Chinese nationals have been charged in court in Singapore for allegedly orchestrating a scam that saw victims deceived into handing over cash and jewellery for so-called religious blessing rituals.
According to Channel News Asia (CNA), Huang Ximing, 61, Zhong Weifeng, 58, Huang Qinyan, 47, and Huang Meiling, 56, each face two counts of cheating in furtherance of a conspiracy, the Singapore Police Force said in a statement yesterday.
The alleged scam came to light after a victim lodged a police report on June 3, claiming she had been approached by three women in Chinatown.
According to charge sheets, the incident began when Huang Meiling asked the victim for directions to a Chinese physician. Zhong Weifeng then stepped in, claiming to know one.
Zhong reportedly told the victim that the physician could only consult outside her premises due to overcrowding and asked the victim to pose as a relative.
The two then led her to Huang Qinyan, who allegedly posed as the physician and told the victim she was 'experiencing misfortune due to negative spiritual elements'.
The three women arranged to meet the victim at Hong Lim Park, where she was persuaded to hand over S$700 (RM2,300) in cash and a gold necklace with a 'Guan Yin' pendant.
Huang Qinyan is said to have placed the items in a black plastic bag and performed a blessing ritual, before instructing the victim to store the bag unopened under her bed for a month.
When the victim opened the bag the next day, she found only leaves inside.
A day later, police received another report of a similar scam in the Clementi area. In this case, two women allegedly approached a second victim, noticed cash in her bag, and convinced her to place her money — totalling S$700 — into a black trash bag for 'safekeeping'. The cash later went missing.
The four accused were arrested on June 5 following extensive ground enquiries and CCTV analysis. The gold necklace was recovered, and police also seized S$1,311 and 10,050 Chinese yuan in cash.
Charges state that on June 3 at around 3pm, near Commonwealth Avenue West, the group acted in concert to deceive another victim into believing they had special techniques to protect her valuables. She was allegedly tricked into handing over an envelope of cash to Huang Meiling and Huang Qinyan.
Huang Ximing, Zhong, and Huang Qinyan appeared via video link in court, where the prosecution sought a one-week remand with permission to take them out for investigations, citing the need to trace potential accomplices, identify more victims, and conduct scene visits. The court granted the application. Huang Meiling was charged separately.
All four are due to return to court on June 13.

Everything happened so fast, says boat capsize survivor

Workers lifting up the wreckage of the boat which overturned in the waters of Tanjung Harapan, Selangor, yesterday. (Bernama pic) KLANG : Everything happened very fast, boat tragedy survivor Chang Yan Qin Alvin, 17, said today after being rescued from a boat which capsized and sank off Tanjung Harapan yesterday. Two people and a toddler died in the incident, while a couple is still missing. Chang, one of six people who survived, said the tragedy occurred when the boat made a U-turn about 30 minutes after departing from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club dock. 'The incident happened very quickly when the relatively fast-moving boat suddenly overturned, and in less than 10 seconds, water had entered all compartments of the boat,' he told reporters at the Selangor maritime agency office today. 'The situation inside the boat became chaotic, but I saved myself by trying to swim before managing to sit on top of the overturned boat.' Chang said he could only scream for help after realising other passengers were not visible and after about five minutes of holding on to the boat, fishermen in another boat approached and rescued him. They contacted the authorities for assistance. 'I understand that this was the second test run for the boat, and before this, the boat was found to be in overall good condition,' he said. (Bernama pic) The tragedy took place at about 5pm yesterday. The missing victims have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife, Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. Their three-year-old son, Darren, was among the three found dead in the front compartment of the boat, alongside family friends Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29, also from Klang Utama. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency operations officer Syafiq Sazali said the boat was partially refloated at 2.20pm today, after which the team began pumping out the water. Missing victims 'swept away' The fire and rescue department has not ruled out the possibility that two missing victims were swept away by currents while the boat was being towed to the Selangor maritime jetty. Port Klang fire and rescue chief Haikal Jammy Ngali said the capsized boat was towed by a public boat for about 500m before a distress call was received at around 5pm. He said the department also did not rule out the possibility that the victims, a married couple, were thrown overboard during the capsize. Klang Utara police chief S Vijaya Rao said the police had not found any clues regarding the two missing victims even though the search radius covered an area of five nautical miles. He said all the victims were believed not to be wearing life jackets, which made the search and rescue effort more difficult. He said initial investigations also revealed that the boat, which was being test-driven, was operated by its owner at the time.

Singapore cop under probe after cyclist injured in Keppel Road hit-and-run

SINGAPORE, June 7 — A police officer is under investigation after allegedly driving off following a traffic accident involving a cyclist along Keppel Road in Singapore yesterday afternoon. According to Channel News Asia (CNA), the collision occurred around 3.10pm, in the direction of the Marina Coastal Expressway. The vehicle involved was a police car driven by a 30-year-old regular officer from the Special Operations Command (SOC). In a statement today, the police said preliminary findings indicated that the officer left the scene without realising a collision had occurred. 'The officer returned to the scene immediately to assist with investigations upon being informed,' the statement read. The cyclist, a 41-year-old man, was conscious when taken to Singapore General Hospital, the Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed to CNA. The officer is currently assisting with investigations for driving without due consideration and for causing hurt. He has also been taken off driving duties while the probe continues.

‘Insufficient evidence' unacceptable in Teoh Beng Hock NFA, says lawyer

Teoh Beng Hock died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by MACC. PETALING JAYA : Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar must provide greater transparency into the Attorney-General's Chambers' (AGC) decision to classify the investigation into Teoh Beng Hock's death as requiring no further action or Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar must provide greater transparency into the Attorney-General's Chambers' (AGC) decision to classify the investigation into Teoh Beng Hock's death as requiring no further action or NFA , said Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh, who is also the family's legal representative. In a statement today, Ramkarpal stressed that the AG's claim of 'insufficient evidence' does little to address the family's long-standing concerns about the quality and thoroughness of the investigations. 'It is disappointing that the AG came to the conclusion that there is insufficient evidence,' he said. 'The AG should disclose further details of his findings, particularly on the question of why he says there is insufficient evidence. 'A general statement to that effect does not, in any way, overcome the family's real concerns that such investigations were not properly and professionally conducted.' The statement follows a letter dated May 30 from Dusuki seeking to explain the AGC's rationale for classifying the case as NFA. Teoh died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest into his death was held and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Prior to 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor. Ramkarpal noted that the AG's justification appeared to rest on a technical distinction – that the Court of Appeal's findings were based on civil, not criminal, standards – and argued that this reasoning is deeply unsatisfactory after over a decade of investigations. He confirmed that Teoh's family is considering a judicial review of the AG's decision and will announce their next steps soon. Teoh's family has long called for accountability and has expressed frustration with repeated delays and lack of resolution in the case.
