British Open bunkergate: R&A does away with tradition of having a crew rank bunkers

Yahoo18-07-2025
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — It only took two holes for Jon Rahm to hit into his first bunker in the British Open. And that's how long it took caddie Adam Hayes to realize the R&A had decided to end a tradition unlike any other at the major championships.
Hayes was going to have to rake the sand himself.
This is nothing that merits hazardous pay. Hayes has been caddying for more than 20 years and it's part of the job.
But at the British Open, it was always different. Dating to 1984 at St. Andrews, what now is the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has sent a crew to the Open where one person walked with each group and raked the bunkers in a trained, uniform fashion.
Not at Royal Portrush.
'I looked around and was like, 'Uh, I've got to rake this,'' Hayes said. 'I do think it's one of the cool things about the The Open, a tradition that for whatever reason they cut out. And I think they should bring it back.
'I don't know why they did it,' he said. 'But I don't know a lot of things.'
That reason? Good question.
'It's a change for us, but we think a good one,' said Mark Darbon, the new CEO of the R&A. When asked why it was good, he only said, 'A number of factors. We just think it's a good model for us here at Portrush.'
What next? Mr. Whippy ice cream without the chocolate flake?
According to Jim Croxton, the CEO of BIGGA, the R&A informed the group after last year's British Open their services would no longer be needed.
'With the growth of on-site greenkeeping teams, as well as the R&A providing top class agronomy support, the requirement for the additional Support Team has lessened; in recent years this team was only responsible for match raking,' Croxton said in an email to Golf.com.
News travels slowly. In fact, it seems even the R&A overlooked the decision because on the entry way to portable restrooms for players, a sign reads, 'For use by Rules Officials, Players, Caddies, Walking Scorers, Scoreboard Carriers & Bunker Rakers.'
All it took was one round for potential problems, both involving Tommy Fleetwood. His caddie, Ian Finnis, spent an extraordinary amount of time raking a bunker from which Fleetwood had a plugged lie near the lip.
Then on the next hole, they discovered the bunker they were in apparently had not been raked, or at least not raked properly. The best he could do was advance it a few yards into the rough, leading to a bogey on Thursday.
'It wasn't a great rake job,' Fleetwood said. 'First thing is I was not very happy to be in there. That was the first thing, so that's my fault. ... It was in somebody's hitting mark that hadn't really been raked great. I probably could have managed it better.'
Fleetwood also was perplexed why BIGGA was not brought back.
'They've always had bunker rakers until this week? I thought so. I thought that was odd,' he said. "I mean, still, you just rake the bunkers, right? It's part of the game. I'm not going to hold it against anyone too much. You don't know what was going on, you don't know what was happening in that moment. I'm not going to get angry about anyone where you don't know what's happening, but it wasn't great.
'Yeah, bunker rakers would have been nice.'
Among the reasons cited by Croxton and an R&A spokesman was the desire to eliminate the amount of people — besides players and caddies — inside the ropes. How one person performing a service causes the fairways to look like the M25 loop in London is hard to fathom, especially with so many broadcast partners.
Mike Kerr, who first caddied at the Open in 2002, was another who didn't realize there had been a change. He works for Carlos Ortiz and noticed the caddie for Chris Kirk running the plastic rake through the sand on Thursday and looked around for the BIGGA crew.
Kerr said it wasn't just a huge perk for caddies for a skilled crew to rake the bunkers. He felt it helped speed play — and keep from being rushed.
'It's so hard when you're trying to figure out the wind and the lie and you've got to the rake the bunker and hurry up to get back to your player,' he said.
Brian Harman's caddie, Scott Tway, also was surprised when he saw the caddie for Joaquin Niemann raking a bunker early in the second round. His first thought: 'Where are the rakers?'
'It was nice. It was awesome. I don't know what happened,' Tway said. 'For caddies, that was one of the nicest things about this tournament was not having to rake bunkers.'

How Cumbrian clubs fared on Northern League opening day

Carlisle City and Penrith got their Northern League Division One campaign under way with creditable opening-day draws. City held highly fancied Shildon to a 0-0 draw at Gillford Park. And Penrith came away from West Auckland Town with a 2-2 draw in the league curtain-raiser. The Cumbrian clubs made it an unscathed start to the 2025/26 campaign. Dan Kirkup's Carlisle City had a tough opening assignment against a Shildon side who finished second in the table last season. City, who were 18th last term, were watched by 163 fans as they included summer signings Tom Short and Kelvin James in their starting XI. Callum Birdsall and Lewis Mitchinson had first-half chances for Kirkup's side with Adam Gordon going close after the break, Tom Mahone denied by the visiting keeper and captain Josh Simpson hitting the bar. READ MORE: Carlisle City head into new season after "brilliant" help from Paul Simpson Next up for City is another home game, against Northallerton Town, on Tuesday night. Jim Nichols' second spell in charge of Penrith saw his side pick up a point on the road in their first game of the campaign. Luke Hunter gave the Bonny Blues - who finished 17th last term - a half-time lead before Conor Hammell added another in the 68th minute. But West Auckland fought back to level with goals by Craig Moody and Luke Bailey in the space of four minutes in front of a 207 crowd. Penrith's XI included the teenage Carlisle United goalkeeper Thomas Randall, with the returning Jamie Armstrong also in their side. Nichols' team take on Birtley Town on Tuesday night in their first home game of the league campaign. Cumbria's other Northern League club, Kendal Town, got off to a losing start with a 3-1 home defeat to Newcastle Benfield. James Bailey levelled for the Mintcakes early in the second half but two late goals saw the north east visitors claim the points. Kendal go to Marske United on Tuesday night.

LIV Golf UK: Joaquin Niemann, Torque GC Take Control in Round 2

ROCESTER, England – On Saturday, Joaquin Niemann took complete control of LIV Golf UK. The Torque GC captain shot an 8-under 63 to open up a commanding 6-shot lead. Niemann, who is 14-under through two rounds, shot 30 on the front nine, which is the lowest front nine score recorded at JCB Country Club across the five rounds played during LIV Golf events. His 63 was the lowest round of the day. The Chilean is aiming to win his fifth LIV Golf tournament of the season and seventh overall, both of which would be LIV Golf records. Torque GC leapt to the top of the team leaderboard and will enter Championship Sunday leading Legion XIII by three shots. Chasing Niemann on Sunday will be Bubba Watson, who is putting an impressive week together. The RangeGoats GC captain shot a 3-under 68 to reach 8-under for the tournament, good for solo second place. One shot behind Watson at 7-under are Paul Casey (3-under 68), who is now the leading Englishman through two rounds at JCB, Adrian Meronk (1-under 70), who struggled to get much going in Round 2 and Caleb Surratt (3-under 68). Surratt, LIV Golf's youngest player, continues to play well after going low in the final round at Valderrama, a performance that helped Legion XIII win the team title. Talor Gooch of Smash GC also climbed the leaderboard with a 5-under 66, and is 6-under for the tournament, which puts him in a tie for sixth alongside four other players: Charles Howell III of Crushers GC, Tom McKibbin of Legion XIII, Carlos Ortiz of Torque GC and Marc Leishman of Ripper GC. Lee Westwood of Majesticks GC couldn't get much going on Saturday. The fan-favorite shot a 1-over 72 and slipped to T14 on the leaderboard. Niemann's domination, supplemented by Carlos Ortiz' rounds of 66-70, vaulted Torque GC to the top of the team leaderboard. Sebastian Munoz also played extremely well on Saturday, shooting a 5-under 66. Mito Pereira shot a 1-over 72 after an even par 71 in Round 1. Torque is looking for their first win since LIV Golf Greenbrier in 2023. Torque GC holds a three-stroke lead over Legion XIII, who are looking to win for the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season. The home team, Majesticks GC, is now ninth on the team leaderboard as it seeks to earn its first podium finish since 2022. JCB played much more difficult in Round 2 than it did in Round 1, with a course scoring average of –0.36 compared to yesterday's –1.27. In addition to the final stretch of holes 15–18, holes 4, 6,7 and 8 played over par, with 6 once again playing as the most difficult (+0.33). TEAM SCORES LIV Golf's new scoring format this season now involves all four scores now counting in every round in the team competition. Padraig Harrington leads Justin Leonard by 2 shots at Senior British Open

Associated Press BERKSHIRE, England (AP) — Padraig Harrington birdied the final hole Saturday for another 5-under 65 for a two-shot lead over Justin Leonard going into the final round of the Senior British Open as the Irishman goes for his second senior major of the year. Harrington was among four players who had at least a share of the lead at some point during the round on the Old Course at Sunningdale. He seized the lead with birdies on the 13th and 14th hole, and a closing birdie added to his slight lead. Harrington was at 13-under 197. He has been in the United Kingdom the last three weeks for links golf, starting with the Scottish Open. He won the U.S. Senior Open in Colorado a month ago. Leonard, the only PGA Tour Champions player to make the cut last week in the British Open at Royal Portrush, also had a second straight 65. Thomas Bjorn had a 67 and was three shots behind. Harrington and Leonard are past British Open champions — Leonard at Royal Troon in 1997, Harrington winning the first of two claret jugs a decade later at Carnoustie (2007) and Royal Birkdale (2008). Either one can become the fifth player to win the British Open and Senior British Open, a feat last accomplished by Darren Clarke in 2022. Steven Alker, a two-time Charles Schwab Cup winner who opened with a 73, tried to get back in the game. He shot 66 and was among four players at 8-under 202, five shots behind. The winner is exempt for the 154th British Open next year at Royal Birkdale. ___ AP golf:
