4 strategies for launching a successful global capability center

Global capability centers are expanding the specialized operations and expertise of companies in diverse sectors. Many companies started using GCCs as a way to outsource a specific function, such as medical billing or invoicing, to an overseas facility to improve cost savings and efficiency. But over time, leaders have realized that GCCs can provide greater business value when they are designed as 'centers of excellence' staffed by highly skilled talent.
'A GCC is a recent business concept; it's basically a wholly owned subsidiary of a large corporation,' explains Jay Bhatty, CEO and founder of NatGasHub.com, an automation software company serving the oil and gas industry. 'A decade ago, the main goal was cost arbitrage. Companies in the U.S. would create a GCC like a call center to outsource individual functions. But now they are using them for entire groups of functions. IT services, finance, and HR can all operate in one global capability center. GCCs are becoming more common in oil and gas, but they were already popularized in many other industries; for example, banking and technology.'
India is home to the majority of GCCs, and the country's footprint is expected to grow in the coming years. By 2030, the market size of India's GCCs is projected to reach $100 billion by 2030, with 2400 GCCs employing over 4.5 million people, a jump from around 1.9 million in 2023. India is a top source of tech talent worldwide, offering a talent pool with both breadth and depth.
Companies are using GCCs to support core business functions, led by finance, HR, data management and analytics, and IT, but they are also starting to expand their reach to include areas such as marketing, legal, customer service, and energy, research, and development.

Bhatty's company operates a GCC in Delhi dedicated to AI research. Around 75 GCC employees focus on how to incorporate AI into NatGasHub.com's suite of client products.
'The labor costs are low, currency exchange rates are favorable, and technology knowledge and labor availability are high,' says Bhatty. 'All of these factors come together. Some companies have even started creating innovation hubs in their GCCs. As visa restrictions in the U.S. have been growing, there is a shortage of skilled talent. A lot of developers come from countries in South Asia, so it helps to source the labor locally, instead of trying to get a visa and getting them to come to the U.S. Setting up innovation hubs in India is also easier because the environment is very business-friendly with incentives for foreign investments.'
4 EXPERT TIPS FOR ESTABLISHING A GCC
1. Define your operating model.
Identify your business needs to determine your GCC's focus area. Get clear on what you want the GCC to do for your business and how you will measure success.
'Have a good idea of what your operating model will be,' says Bhatty. 'Is it focused on innovation or software development or R&D? Or do you want it to do all your back-office processing? You may have your U.S. employees doing administrative tasks when they can be done better, cheaper, faster in a GCC. You can set up a GCC in one country for all your business units, and it can serve all of your offices all over the world in one centralized place.'

2. Be aware of the challenges.
Creating an effective extension of your organization—with a new office in a new country—is no small feat. Research the geographic area and business function area extensively before getting too far into the project. Talk to other leaders who have started GCCs in the same region. Understand the common obstacles you're likely to encounter.
'While the Indian regulatory system is favorable, and there's a lot of labor available, there are still issues to deal with when you're running a business unit outside of your country,' says Bhatty. 'Compliance complexities, language barriers, company registration. All of that is time consuming. Talent retention is also a challenge because, as more GCCs are set up, you are competing with other companies for the same workers.'
3. Enlist local expertise.
The DIY approach might seem more cost-effective at first glance, but it's crucial to calculate the total costs—time and money—of setting up a GCC. Consider working with a local service provider that can help your company find an office space, navigate bureaucracy, and recruit talent.
'Setting up our GCC was a bigger challenge than I expected,' says Bhatty. 'A lesson learned is that trying to do it yourself might take longer and be more costly in the long run. Local service companies are very knowledgeable about the area and can advise you on where to site your GCC—location is so important in choosing real estate. They will expedite paperwork, secure furniture and supplies, and get your internet connection set up. Some of the government regulations are cumbersome, and you may not be familiar with them. There may also be cultural and language barriers. These people can help you find English-speaking talent or translators.'
4. Prioritize people management.
A GCC is only as effective as the people who operate it. Make people management your top priority. Put the right people in place to recruit, train, develop, and lead your GCC team. Create service-level agreements that formalize expectations for tasks and timelines. For example, you may require your GCC employees in India to send deliverables by 9 a.m. Eastern time for the team working out of your U.S. headquarters.
'Managing a GCC is like managing a separate company,' says Bhatty. 'Hiring, retention, and training can be challenging because many employees aren't initially well-versed on how business is done by American corporations. But after COVID, the workforce really became global. Companies figured out that people can work from other countries with people in different countries, despite the time difference. GCCs are proving that this model works, and that's why it's accelerating.'

Samsung is one of many companies that have been pushing for employees to return to the office fulltime. However, now the brand is taking RTO efforts in the U.S. one step further with a tool that tracks attendance for a group in its semiconductor business. In an internal email, seen by Business Insider, Samsung informed employees about the new compliance tracking tool. 'This tool will provide each Manager with visibility to the number of days & time in building metrics for each team member,' the email said. It continued, 'This will ensure that team members are fulfilling their expectation regarding in office work – however that is defined with their business leader – as well as guarding against instances of lunch/coffee badging.' In 2023 the brand embraced a global hybrid work model, rolling out 500 new jobs. While the specifics varied, the majority of the postings (58.3%) included the ability to work from home at least part of the work week. The brand also gave employees in the company's corporate offices in South Korea one Friday off a month. However, last April, after posting lower than expected sales, the brand asked its corporate executives to begin working six days a week in order to 'inject a sense of crisis' into its workforce. 'Considering that performance of our major units, including Samsung Electronics Co., fell short of expectations in 2023, we are introducing the six-day work week for executives to inject a sense of crisis and make all-out efforts to overcome this crisis,' a Samsung Group executive told the Korea Economic Daily. This May, Samsung asked employees to begin returning to the office full time. The following month, it updated employees on the RTO initiative. 'We are already experiencing increased foot traffic daily, with more cars in the parking lot and hungry mouths in our cafeterias on Fridays, to name just a few signs,' Samsung said in an email viewed by BI. At the time, Samsung also noted that it was developing a tool to track attendance. Employee tracking might sound offbeat, but workplace surveillance is on the rise. According to a recent ExpressVPN survey, 74% of U.S. employers now use online tracking tools to monitor work activities. That includes real-time screen tracking (59%) and web browsing logs (62%). Likewise, 61% use AI -powered analytics to measure productivity and around 67% collect biometric data to monitor things like behavior and attendance. Still, that doesn't mean it's popular among employees or feels all that ethical. While most companies (three out of four) use biometric surveillance, only 22% of employees know they're being monitored, according to the same report. Likewise, 17% of employees said they'd be 'very likely' to resign over workplace surveillance. Another 32% said they'd strongly consider it. It's unclear how Samsung's new tracking tool will work, how closely employees will be monitored, and how many employees will be impacted. Fast Company reached out to the brand but did not hear back by the time of publication. Samsung told employees they will find out more about the tracking system soon. 'Additional information regarding the new tool will be made available to Managers this month,' the email to employees said.

How Afghan women under Talban rule are coding their way to a brighter future

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — One after the other, the opportunities vanished. Like so many other Afghan women, Sodaba could do little but watch as her country's new Taliban government imposed a stranglehold on women's lives. The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021, and quickly set about implementing a dizzying array of restrictions for women: No visiting parks or gyms, no eating in restaurants, no working, except in very few professions. But one of the cruelest blows for the pharmacology student was the ban on education beyond primary school. Pushed by necessity, she went online. And there, she found hope: a free computer coding course for women in Afghanistan. Taught in her own language, Dari, by a young Afghan refugee living half a world away, in Greece. 'I believe a person should not be (bowed) by circumstance, but should grow and get their dreams through every possible way,' Sodaba said. She began learning computer programming and website development. The new skills 'helped me regain my confidence and clarity in my direction,' said the 24-year-old, who asked to be identified by her first name only for safety reasons because of the education ban. 'I am so happy to be part of this journey.' The courses are part of Afghan Geeks, a company created by Murtaza Jafari, now 25, who arrived in Greece on a boat from Turkey years ago as a teenage refugee. 'I had no idea … Like zero zero' While living in a shelter in Athens after he arrived, Jafari received help from a teacher to enroll in a computer coding course. He knew nothing about computers — not even how to switch one on — didn't know what coding was and didn't speak a word of English, essential for computer programming. 'I had no idea about English. No idea, like zero zero,' he said. 'And I was trying at the same time to learn Greek, learn English and then also learn computer … It was super difficult for me.' But several months later, he earned his certificate. Coding opened up a new world. A couple of years ago, he set up Afghan Geeks. Paying it forward Jafari said that he started providing online courses last December to help women in his homeland, and as an expression of gratitude for the help he received as a youngster alone in a foreign country. 'The main goal was to give back to the community, especially to the Afghan women, what I had received from the other people for free,' he said, sitting in his sparse one-room flat in downtown Athens. 'I think … sharing knowledge is what makes a real difference to someone,' he said. 'And if I share it, it just goes and expands, and then there's more people to learn things.' Jafari now has 28 female students in Afghanistan in three classes: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Aside from teaching, he also mentors his students in finding online internships and jobs using their new skills. For women in a country where nearly all professions are banned, the opportunity for online work is a lifeline. The most qualified join his team at Afghan Geeks, which also offers website development and chatbot creation services. He now has several clients, he said, from Afghanistan, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe. 'Those clients were happy that they are contributing in a meaningful goal. So the goal was to support women … And that's why they keep coming back for other projects that they have,' Jafari said. Although he's been teaching his students for seven months, Jafari has never seen their faces. He asks how they are and what the situation is in Afghanistan, 'but I've never asked them to open their cameras or to share their profile, to share the image. I've never done that. I don't want to do it, because I respect their culture, their choice.' Online academy With the Taliban government's restrictions increasingly confining women to their homes, and going as far as officially banning women's voices and bare faces in public, the web has opened a new world of possibilities for women in Afghanistan. Zuhal, a young Afghan woman whose dream of going to university was shattered, partnered with a university professor to launch an online academy for women about 18 months ago. What began as a team of five people now has a crew of 150 teachers and administrators, and more than 4,000 students, she said. 'We are all working voluntarily with no salary, no support,' said the 20-year-old, who uses a nickname for fear of reprisals after receiving threats over the academy. 'Our only aim or goal is to provide free education for girls and to enhance research in Afghanistan.' The academy, Vision Online University, now runs courses in a range of subjects, from psychology and foreign languages to Quranic studies, nursing and public speaking, among others. When the education ban came into effect, Zuhal said that she 'was depressed because nothing was available." 'There was no school, no university, no courses,' she said. "And that really affected me. 'Then I thought (to) myself that this is not the solution. If I get depressed, that will not be helpful, not for me and not for other girls.' She decided 'that I shouldn't give up. I should do something for girls of my country.' Now she also pursues a degree in computer science through an American online university, the University of the People. It's tough, she said. With no funding, the academy for women can't pay for premium online services that allow large group meetings. She herself often struggles to afford her internet service. 'But I'm doing it because I have a goal," she said. "And my goal is to support girls. If I stop it, more than 4,000 or 5,000 girls will be depressed again.' Analysis-India-US spat over trade and oil threatens wider fallout

Das, David Brunnstrom and Shivam Patel NEW DELHI/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Donald Trump's tirade against India over trade and Russian oil purchases threatens to undo two decades of diplomatic progress, analysts and officials say, and could derail other areas of cooperation as domestic political pressures drive both sides to harden their stances. India's opposition parties and the general public have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stand up to what they call bullying by Trump, who on Wednesday signed an executive order subjecting Indian imports to an additional 25% in duties on top of an existing 25% tariff, due to its big purchases of Russian oil. While India has emerged in recent years as a key partner for Washington in its strategic rivalry with China, its large U.S. trade surplus and close relations with Russia - which Trump is seeking to pressure into agreeing to a peace agreement with Ukraine - have made it a prime target in the Republican president's global tariff offensive. Trump's taunt that India could buy oil from arch enemy Pakistan has also not gone down well in New Delhi, said two Indian government sources. India has also rejected repeated claims by Trump that he used trade as a lever to end a recent military conflict between India and Pakistan. In an unusually sharp statement this week, India accused the U.S. of double standards in singling it out for Russian oil imports while continuing to buy Russian uranium hexafluoride, palladium and fertiliser. On Wednesday, it called the tariffs "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable," vowing to "take all actions necessary to protect its national interests." But New Delhi knows that any further escalation will hurt it in matters beyond trade, said the sources. Unlike China, India does not have leverage like supplies of rare earths to force Trump's hand to improve the terms of any trade deal, they said. In recent years, successive U.S. administrations, including Trump's first, carefully cultivated relations with India with an eye on it as a vital partner in long-term efforts to counter the growing might of China. But analysts say Trump's recent moves have plunged the relationship back to possibly its worst phase since the U.S. imposed sanctions on India for nuclear tests in 1998. "India is now in a trap: because of Trump's pressure, Modi will reduce India's oil purchases from Russia, but he cannot publicly admit to doing so for fear of looking like he's surrendering to Trump's blackmail," said Ashley Tellis at Washington's Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "We could be heading into a needless crisis that unravels a quarter century of hard-won gains with India." Indian state refiners have in recent days stopped buying Russian oil as discounts narrowed and pressure from Trump rose, Reuters has reported. NEW CHALLENGES FOR RELATIONS A more pressing challenge for India, analysts say, is the stark divergence between its priorities and Trump's political base on key issues such as work visas for tech professionals and offshoring of services. India has long been a major beneficiary of U.S. work visa programs and the outsourcing of software and business services, a sore point for Americans who have lost jobs to cheaper workers in India. Relations with India risk becoming a "football in American domestic politics," warned Evan Feigenbaum, a former senior State Department official under the Republican presidency of George W. Bush. "Issues that directly touch India are among the most partisan and explosive in Washington, including immigration and deportation, H1B visas for tech workers, offshoring and overseas manufacturing by U.S. companies, and technology sharing and co-innovation with foreigners," he wrote in a LinkedIn post. Since a 2008 deal to cooperate on civilian nuclear technology, the two countries have deepened intelligence sharing and defence cooperation and expanded interactions with Australia and Japan through the Quad grouping aimed at containing China's dominance in the Indo-Pacific. But fractures have appeared, despite Modi's rapport with Trump in his first term and then former President Joe Biden. Images in February of Indians deported by the U.S. on military planes, their hands and legs shackled, horrified the country just days before Modi went to see Trump seeking to stave off high tariffs. The relationship was also seriously tested in late 2023 when the U.S. said it had foiled a plot with Indian links to kill a Sikh separatist leader on U.S. soil. New Delhi has denied any official connection to the plot. "The Modi regime's credibility in the U.S. has gone down," said Sukh Deo Muni, a former Indian diplomat and a professor emeritus at New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. "And maybe there are people who think that India or Modi had to be brought back on track, if not taught a lesson. And if that trend continues, I'm quite worried that the challenge is quite powerful and strong for India to navigate." STRENGTHENING TIES WITH U.S. RIVALS One Indian government source said India needs to gradually repair ties with the U.S. while engaging more with other nations that have faced the brunt of Trump tariffs and aid cuts, including the African Union and the BRICS bloc that includes Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa. India is already making some moves with Russia and China. Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit New Delhi this year and on Tuesday, Russia said the two countries had discussed further strengthening defence cooperation "in the form of a particularly privileged strategic partnership." India has also boosted engagement with China, a change after years of tensions following a deadly border clash in 2020. Modi is set to visit China soon for the first time since 2018. "Russia will attempt to exploit the rift between the U.S. and India by proposing the restoration of the Russia-India-China trilateral and new projects in defence," said analyst Aleksei Zakharov at the Observer Research Foundation in New Delhi. "India will undoubtedly be mindful of structural factors such as sanctions against Russia and will seek to find a compromise with the Trump administration."
