These initiatives aim to identify genetic conditions early and provide personalised treatments for affected individuals.
Updates on key genomic research and initiatives
Sheikh Khaled was briefed on the completion of the Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) Emirati Reference Genome study, which aims to enhance precision medicine by filling gaps in genomic data. He was also updated on the progress of the Premarital Genetic Screening Programme, launched in January 2025, which supports couples in making informed family planning decisions by identifying genetic compatibility and providing personalised counseling.

The Emirati Genome Programme has made significant progress, with more than 700,000 genetic samples collected from UAE citizens. Additionally, the program has started collecting samples from other nationalities to address global gaps in genomic data and promote international collaboration in precision medicine research.

19 NCR DOH Hospitals Open Fast Lanes for Leptospirosis Cases
The Department of Health (DOH) announced that 19 of its hospitals in the National Capital Region have opened dedicated 'fast lanes' for leptospirosis patients to ensure quicker diagnosis and treatment. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread through water contaminated by the urine of infected animals, often after exposure to floodwaters. Patients visiting these fast lanes will be assessed for possible admission and evaluated for the appropriate use of the antibiotic doxycycline. The list of hospitals includes major facilities in Manila, Caloocan, Las Piñas, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Pasig, Quezon City, and Valenzuela. Among them are San Lazaro Hospital, East Avenue Medical Center, Lung Center of the Philippines, National Kidney and Transplant Institute, and Philippine Children's Medical Center. The DOH urged anyone who has been submerged in floodwaters or mud to seek medical consultation immediately. From June 8 to August 7, the agency recorded 2,396 leptospirosis cases nationwide.

Egypt's PM reviews efforts to support local pharmaceutical industry
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Sunday chaired a meeting to review efforts to support and develop the country's pharmaceutical industry, with the aim of boosting local manufacturing and attracting more foreign investment. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, the Minister of Finance, Ahmed Kouchouk, and the heads of the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) and the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement (UPA). Madbouly affirmed the government's interest in providing all necessary support for the growth and localisation of this vital industry. He noted that Egypt has a long history in pharmaceuticals, with large industrial facilities, and possesses promising advantages for further progress, including a large domestic market and access to nearby regional markets. During the meeting, EDA Chairman Ali El-Ghamrawy presented a report on the state of the industry. He stated that the sector is nationally stable and has achieved significant jumps in local market sales in 2024 compared to 2023, with positive expectations for continued growth in 2025. El-Ghamrawy confirmed that there is a secure level of coverage for various therapeutic groups, including hormones, cardiovascular drugs, oncology products, and corticosteroids. He also assured that there is a safe strategic stock of pharmaceutical raw materials, sufficient for three to six months. The EDA chairman highlighted the growth of foreign companies in the Egyptian market, noting that their sales in 2024 saw a 43% increase compared to 2023. He attributed this progress to several measures taken by the EDA to attract international firms, including monitoring modern and innovative products, a reference-based registration process that reduces approval times from two years to as little as two months, a unified electronic registration system, and support for localisation projects. El-Ghamrawy also noted that the EDA provides about 979 essential regulatory services to support the pharmaceutical industry and has not increased the fees for these services in the past two years.

Abu Dhabi recorded 15,628 Emirati births in 2024
The number of births in Abu Dhabi reached 39,333 in 2024. According to the Department of Health and the Statistics Centre, 15,628 were Emiratis, of which 8,298 were males and 7,330 females. Meanwhile, non-Emirati births reached 23,492, comprising 12,174 males and 11,318 females. Abu Dhabi city had the most births with 27,353, followed by Al Ain with 10,874 and Al Dhafra with 996. In Abu Dhabi city, there were 9,676 Emirati births, including 5,102 males and 4,574 females. Meanwhile, there were 17,510 non-Emirati births, including 9,060 males and 8,450 females. In Al Ain, there were 5,524 Emirati births, including 2,961 males and 2,563 females, and 5,307 non-Emirati births, including 2,740 males and 2,567 females. In Al Dhafra region, there were 318 Emirati births, including 181 males and 137 females, and 675 non-Emirati births, including 374 males and 301 females. The month with the highest number of births was October 2024, with 3,623 babies born in Abu Dhabi. February saw the fewest births, at 3,004. Separately, the number of deaths in Abu Dhabi reached 4,499, according to statistics published by the Department of Health and the Statistics Centre. 1,332 were citizens, including 797 males and 535 females. Meanwhile, the number of deaths among non-citizens was 3,150, comprising 2,211 males and 937 females.
