Donated ₹25 lakhs to National Herald, says Karnataka deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar
Amid reports of his name figuring in the ED charge sheet in the National Herald case, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Friday (May 23, 2025) said he and his brother D.K. Suresh have donated money to the Congress-run newspaper.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah backed his deputy, saying there is nothing wrong in donating money.
'Me and D.K. Suresh donated ₹25 lakh each to National Herald. What is wrong in that. We have donated to a newspaper run by our party. What's wrong in that,' Mr. Shivakumar told reporters in Kolhar village in Vijayapura district.
He was responding a question by a journalist that his as well as Mr. Suresh's name figures in Enforcement Directorate charge sheet in the National Herald case.
When he was told that ₹2.5 crore was donated, he said, "Yes we have given to the Trust. We are not denying it. Did we give it stealthily. No. We have openly given from our income." Asserting that he has donated money, the DCM said he will continue to do the same in future as well.
He alleged that there is politics behind mentioning his name in the ED charge sheet.
Mr. Shivakumar's brother Mr. Suresh said, "We have donated about ₹2 crore to ₹2.5 crore to the trust. We have answered all the questions raised by the (ED) officers. We are not saying that we have not donated money. We have no information whether donating was wrong."
He alleged that the charge sheet has been filed in a manner to fix the Congress leaders.
The former MP said the charge sheet was a political gimmick.
'This is not Sonia Gandhi's trust but Young India Trust. We donated to the Young India Trust. This was not an institution for personal gain and it was never used for personal motive,' Mr. Suresh said.
To a question, he said the money donated were part of the I-T declaration.
Reacting to the ED charge sheet, Mr. Siddaramaiah told reporters in Mysuru, "Is charity wrong? There is nothing wrong in donations."

Laura Loomer's snide remark on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's weight gain backfires
American far-right political activist Laura Loomer's snide remark on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's supposed weight gain has not gone down well with a large section of the internet. Loomer, on Sunday, shared an Instagram video that shows Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – also known as AOC – endorsing Zohran Mamdani in the 2025 NYC mayoral primary. The Democrat congresswoman was seen wearing a red dress in the video. 'Yikes. AOC has gained at least 50 pounds since getting into Congress,' Laura Loomer wrote while responding to the video. 'She's getting massive,' Loomer added, tagging AOC in her post. The comment attracted criticism from hundreds of people. Many called out Laura Loomer for body shaming and asked her to confine her criticism to work, rather than appearance. Some of the criticism came from supporters of the Republican party, which Loomer also supports. 'Don't do this. Please. Attack her policies and corruption all day. Leave the body shaming alone,' wrote X user Chrissy Casilio, a Republican. 'I am no Democrat but you attacking another woman's look is very disgusting,' another user added. 'I'm a conservative but let's criticize policies and NOT resort to personal petty attacks but that's just my opinion,' a third wrote. Some of the reactions were less charitable than others. 'You are the last person who should comment on someone's appearance, Looner. You're a walking plastic surgery nightmare,' an X user said. 'This is the sort of petty c**p that makes it hard to take you seriously on anything. Stick to legit criticisms, of that there is plenty, not her weight or figure,' a user said. Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez is currently serving as the U.S. Representative for New York's 14th Congressional District. Laura Loomer, on the other hand, is a far‑right political activist, conspiracy theorist, and MAGA influencer closely aligned with Donald Trump.

BJP Karnataka Lawmakers To Donate Monthly Salary For Stadium Tragedy Victims
Opposition leader R Ashoka declared that all Bharatiya Janata Party legislators in Karnataka's Assembly and Legislative Council will contribute their entire monthly salary to support families affected by the devastating stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. The announcement came during a demonstration outside the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vidhana Soudha on Sunday, where Ashoka called for government accountability in the tragedy that claimed eleven lives and left 56 injured. The incident occurred during a felicitation ceremony for Royal Challengers Bengaluru following their first IPL championship victory. Demanding immediate action, the Opposition leader requested a three-day special legislative session to address the catastrophe and stated that formal appeals would be submitted to both the Speaker and Chief Minister. Ashoka criticized the ruling Congress party's handling of the event, alleging they proceeded despite police safety concerns. "Eleven innocent students perished in this tragedy while Congress officials celebrated," Ashoka stated, accusing the government of disregarding law enforcement warnings and prioritizing political visibility over public welfare. He referenced correspondence from Vidhana Soudha police to the Chief Secretary expressing safety concerns before the June 4 event. The BJP leader condemned the hasty organization and compromised security measures, claiming all precautionary advisories were ignored. He called for the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, alleging they continued the program despite knowing about casualties. "Eight children had already perished when the ceremony commenced, yet the event proceeded. These officials demonstrate heartless leadership," Ashoka declared. Criticizing the subsequent suspension of police personnel, the Opposition leader demanded a comprehensive judicial investigation. He noted confusion over multiple inquiries being conducted simultaneously and insisted on a probe supervised by a High Court judge for transparency and credibility. "Three separate investigations have been initiated, creating uncertainty about which is legitimate. Only a High Court judge-led inquiry can ensure proper justice," Ashoka emphasized. The BJP leader also challenged the government to provide Rs 1 crore compensation if they maintain their innocence in the matter. His party's salary donation gesture represents solidarity with grieving families while maintaining pressure on the state administration for accountability in the preventable tragedy.
