Universal Music Group files confidentially for US listing

Business Times20 hours ago
[NEW YORK] Universal Music Group has filed confidentially for a US listing, which would fulfil the terms of a deal with billionaire Bill Ackman's hedge fund Pershing Square.
The Amsterdam-listed firm submitted documents to the US Securities & Exchange Commission relating to a proposed offering by certain of its shareholders, according to a statement on Monday (Jul 21). The world's largest music company will not receive any proceeds from the sale.
The filing comes after Universal said in January it would plan the US listing in order to satisfy an agreement with Pershing Square, a statement at the time showed. Ackman resigned from Universal's board in May, citing increasing demands on his time from commitments including his appointment as executive chairman of Howard Hughes Holdings.
Universal Music, which is the label for artists including Taylor Swift, had in recent months resisted Ackman's push to move its domicile and delist it from Euronext Amsterdam. Pershing Square had urged Universal Music to pursue a US listing, saying it would substantially increase the valuation of the shares.
A group of shareholders affiliated with Pershing Square in March raised more than 1.3 billion euros (S$1.9 billion) from the sale of about a 2.7 per cent stake in the Hilversum, Netherlands-headquartered firm, Bloomberg News reported. BLOOMBERG

Chinese investors snap up Hong Kong stocks as flows near record

[HONG KONG] Mainland Chinese investors' purchase of Hong Kong-listed stocks is approaching an annual record, driving a rally that has made a key benchmark in the city one of the world's best performers. Southbound net inflows expanded by another HK$2.7 billion (S$440.8 million) on Tuesday (Jul 22), taking this year's total to HK$800 billion, a whisker away from 2024's previous record of HK$808 billion. The accelerated buying came as the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index gained 24 per cent this year, in a rally fuelled by DeepSeek-led technology breakthroughs, mainland investors' hunt for quality assets and global funds' diversification needs. Also driving the southbound flows is a less robust onshore market, where the CSI 300 benchmark has risen 4.7 per cent in the same period. Southbound flows may exceed HK$1 trillion this year, according to estimates by China International Capital Corp (CICC) analysts including Kevin Liu. They expect the purchases to taper in the current half year as mainland mutual and insurance funds run low on dry powder. Mutual funds may add only HK$100 billion for the rest of the year before they approach the 50 per cent cap for Hong Kong equity positions that applies to most funds, while insurance firms may buy another HK$200 billion, CICC's analysts estimate. The level of mainland investor participation has climbed with the inflows, with southbound turnover accounting for 47 per cent of the Hong Kong market's year-to-date average and up about 10 percentage points from 2024's level. Still, there may be room for retail demand to increase, as exchange-traded funds' turnover was less than 1 per cent of the total last month under the stock link between Hong Kong and the mainland. Wing Tai Properties unveils Hong Kong CBD mixed-use development joint venture with CSI Properties

[SINGAPORE] Real estate developer Wing Tai Properties announced a joint venture with CSI Properties – a mixed-use development in the Hong Kong central business district set to be completed in mid-2026. The placemaking project, named Central Crossing, is a 433,000 square foot (sq ft) development situated at the city's cultural and lifestyle hub and connected to its key business and financial institutions, said Wing Tai Properties on Tuesday (Jul 22). As a Grade A office development built on a heritage site, it aims to embrace the local heritage of the area, including historical features that date back to 1880, while providing a new addition to the city's urban landscape, said the property developer. Located at 118 Wellington Street in the Central district of Hong Kong, it will integrate Grade A offices, a luxury international hotel, a bespoke lifestyle hub, green open spaces and heritage preservation features. The project will feature a dual tower structure, comprising a 28-storey office tower with some 10,600 sq ft of gross floor area and a hotel tower, both of which will be positioned to align with the city's historic urban grid. Commercial spaces will be located at the bases of the towers alongside a four-storey water wall that defines the main entrance of the hotel, Wing Tai Properties said.
