There will be no Arne Slot on the touchline at Anfield tonight. Share
Is this the start of Liverpool's victory parade? They are 11 points clear at the top and their closest rivals do not possess a fit striker. It feels the effective and efficient Reds are romping home to the title, their superiority further proved with a straightforward win over Manchester City at the weekend.
Arne Slot – banned from the touchline here – will face Newcastle once more in a few weeks, when the two do battle at Wembley for the first major trophy of the season. Is this a dress rehearsal for that? Not really, as there is plenty to play for on the night at Anfield. This is a fixture that in the 1990s brought some brilliant entertainment to the nation and considering Newcastle's last match was a 4-3 win, maybe we will be seeing more of that tonight.
Here's to a cracker!

Liverpool told to complete one key signing after Florian Wirtz: 'They've got to'

Liverpool continue to chase Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz but former striker Emile Heskey believes the Reds' next priority in summer transfer window is clear Emile Heskey reckons Liverpool need to concentrate on adding a prolific centre-forward once they have wrapped up a deal for Florian Wirtz. The Reds have already seen two bids for Germany playmaker Wirtz turned down by Bayer Leverksen, who are demanding a record £125m for the Bundesliga's best player. ‌ And once Liverpool 's pursuit of the Germany playmaker concludes, former striker Heskey would like to see the club focus on bringing in a striker who can score regularly - especially with Darwin Nunez appearing likely to be heading for the exit following two disappointing campaigns. ‌ Liverpool are also keen on the Bournemouth full back Milos Kerkez having already confirmed a deal for Wirtz's Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong after Trent Alexander-Arnold sealed his move to Real Madrid ahead of next week's Club World Cup. 'I'd like to see Liverpool bring in a centre forward too. They've been missing that since Roberto Firmino,' Heskey said. 'You only realise his impact on the team when you look at his goals and those of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah either side of him. He'd score about 15 goals a season with the other two scoring 20 plus, so that's around 60 goals from your front three every season. 'Nowadays, it's only Salah putting up those numbers. They've got to bolster that No9 position and bring in a proper goalscorer. We've seen what Erling Haaland has done at Manchester City. Alexander Isak has shown the importance of a goalscoring No9 for Newcastle this season, too.' Heskey, who was speaking to Poker Scout, also said that he believes Wirtz is a similar sort of player to former Reds midfielder Philippe Coutinho. ‌ He added: 'The potential signing of Florian Wirtz would be great for Liverpool. He's a fantastic player and having watched a few clips of him, he reminds me of Philippe Coutinho. His way of manoeuvring the ball and getting into those pockets of space really reminds me of him, his dribbling and finishing is top class also. 'That type of player has been missing from this Liverpool side for a while, who can really do well in those tight spaces and create some more chances through the middle.

Liverpool target Florian Wirtz puts in crunching tackle on Man United star Bruno Fernandes and rows with Bernardo Silva in Germany's defeat by Portugal

Liverpool 's main transfer target of the summer Florian Wirtz was involved in a heated battle with Bruno Fernandes during Germany's Nations League defeat by Portugal. Liverpool are pursuing a club record transfer of attacking midfielder Wirtz, with Bayer Leverkusen holding out for £120million for one of Europe's most sought-after midfielders. The Reds are currently at £109m, but reports suggest a deal is on the verge of being agreed, with personal terms not an issue. On Wednesday, Reds fans got a first sighting of Wirtz since news broke of their pursuit when he lined up for his country in the Nations League semi-final clash. Wirtz put in a solid performance playing just off the left of the central striker and played a tidy give-and-go for his side's goal. He also won the praise of some Liverpool fans online for a crunching, studs-up tackle on Manchester United skipper Fernandes in the first half, while he was also involved in a heated row with Manchester City star Bernardo Silva at times. Florian Wirtz has just done this tackle on Bruno Fernandes 😮‍💨 — Paul🥷 (@l4pablo) June 4, 2025 In the first half, Wirtz challenged Fernandes for a ball, but mis-timed his tackle and stood on his opponent's foot. Fernandes hit the ground in agony and hobbled through the remaining minutes up to half-time. Things then escalated in the second period. During a Germany attack, Wirtz as tripped by Silva on the half-way line and himself stayed on the ground in pain. A few minutes later, off the ball, there was an altercation. The two players - who could have been team-mates had City not pulled out of their pursuit of Wirtz - went almost head-to-head when Silva hit the deck, seemingly claiming he had been stood on. Wirtz tried to lift the 30-year-old up from the floor, but Fernandes raced in and pulled the German away from the scene. A pushing match ensued between a number of players, with Wirtz booked for his involvement. VAR deemed there was no foul play in his altercation with Silva. In the game itself, meanwhile, the Liverpool target scored the opening goal of the game after a relatively quiet first period. While his defensive work stood out, he had one effort at goal in the opening 45 minutes and played a neat pass for Joshua Kimmich to create an opportunity. In the second half, however, he was finally allowed time on the ball and played a neat give-and-go with his captain, Kimmich, to score. He passed and made his way into the box, with the right wing back on the night delivering a clever cross. Nick Woltemade blocked off Ruben Dias, and Wirtz provided the deft flick required to beat Diogo Costa and put his side ahead. Portugal, though, had the last laugh. Some fans mocked Wirtz online when he was beaten by Fernandes on the right flank, and Francisco Conceicao drove in to curl in a fine equaliser. Later, Nuno Mendes, fresh from winning the Champions League in the same stadium just days ago, played a classy one-two with Fernandes and crossed for Cristiano Ronaldo to score the winner. It means Portugal will go onto play either Spain or France in Sunday's Nations League final, while Germany will face the other in a third-place play-off. Wirtz, though, could be Liverpool player by then. An agreement is close, and completion would represent a statement move from the champions, who have already signed Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5m and are close to brining in Milos Kerkez for £45m from Bournemouth.

From pitch invader scuffle to matchwinner – Cristiano Ronaldo stars for Portugal

The 40-year-old was confronted by a pitch invader who wanted a selfie ahead of kick-off before scoring the winning goal in a 2-1 semi-final victory over Germany in Munich. The hosts had gone in front early in the second half when Liverpool transfer target Florian Wirtz headed home but Roberto Martinez's men hit back with two goals in five minutes. A brilliant strike from Francisco Conceicao, whose father Sergio scored the last time Portugal beat Germany in Euro 2000, brought them level before Ronaldo bagged his 137th international goal with an easy tap-in to win the match. It sent Portugal through to the final where they will meet either Spain or France on Sunday. There was plenty of drama in the warm-up as midway through an electrical storm, Ronaldo had his confrontation, with the young fan dragged away by stewards. The storm caused a 10-minute delay to kick-off, but once the action got under way it was almost an electric start for the hosts as they started on the front foot with Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa making two great saves. First he produced a fine stop to deny debutant Nick Woltemade's fizzed effort before getting down quickly to turn Leon Goretzka's stroked effort around the post. Florian Wirtz. And soon after the ball went in at the other end as Germany took the lead in the 48th minute. Joshua Kimmich, winning his 100th cap, made it, clipping a delightful ball over the defence for Wirtz to run on to and find the bottom corner. Portugal's response was good and Bruno Fernandes, fresh from a post-season tour to Asia with Manchester United, whipped an effort just wide. But it was substitute Conceicao who made the difference five minutes after coming off the bench. 40-years-old.#NationsLeague — UEFA EURO (@UEFAEURO) June 4, 2025 It was a brilliant individual goal, cutting in from the right, driving towards goal before finding the bottom corner with a 25-yard curling effort. The turnaround was complete five minutes later after another fine goal. Mendes played a one-two with Fernandes and then laid it on a plate for Ronaldo to tap into an empty net after just staying onside. Conceicao could have killed the match but whistled an effort just wide and Germany almost equalised moments later as Karim Adeyemi advanced into the box but his shot hit the outside of the post. Marc-Andre ter Stegen made a miraculous double save to deny Diogo Jota and Conceicao at the death, but Portugal's work was done.
