Javier Mascherano revealed that Messi would miss his side's Florida derby against Orlando, as he continues to recover from a muscle injury he picked up against Necaxa.
Lionel Messi is set to sit out Inter Miami's MLS encounter against Orlando on Sunday rivals as the World Cup-winner continues to recover from a muscle injury he sustained during the Florida-based side's Leagues Cup clash against Necaxa, coach Javier Mascherano said Saturday.
'No, Leo will not be available tomorrow," Mascherano said.
'He is fine, but obviously it would be crazy to risk taking him to Orlando because of all that is ahead," Messi's Argentine compatriot continued.
'We are optimistic that he will soon return with us," the former Argentina and Barcelona defender added.
Miami posted a 3-1 triumph over Pumas UNAM on Thursday in their final group stage encounter of the Leagues Cup despite Messi's absence as goals from Rodrigo De Paul, Luis Suarez and Tadeo Allende helped Miami fight back after Jorge Ruvalcaba had put the Mexican side ahead.
Messi, the magician from Rosario who led Argentina to their third World Cup title at Qatar in the 2022 edition of the quadrenial event, was substituted in the 11th minute of Inter Miami's Leagues Cup match against Mexican side Necaxa at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale after a collision with opposition defender Alexis Pena. Miami secured a 5-4 victory on penalties following a 2-2 draw at the end of regular play.
After the Florida Derby against Orlando, Inter will host the LA Galaxy on August 16, followed by a Leagues Cup quarter-final against Mexico's Tigres UANL three days later.
Inter are currently fifth in the MLS Eastern Conference, eight points behind leaders Philadelphia and one point ahead of Orlando, with three matches in hand.
Messi, an eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, led Miami to the Leagues Cup title in 2023 after joining the Herons. He has scored a league-best 18 goals in MLS matches this season.

BCCI grooms Vaibhav Suryavanshi in special programme to fill looming vacuum amid Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma exit buzz

Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been a busy kid all summer. Since bursting onto the scene with his spectacular IPL performance earlier this year, the 14-year-old has carried his sublime form across formats during India's recent U-19 tour of England. Upon returning home, he attended a special training session with the Rajasthan Royals before receiving a call from the BCCI, which led him straight to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru on August 10. BCCI has begun grooming Vaibhav Suryavanshi to fill looming void in senior team(Action Images via Reuters) According to a MyKhel report, Vaibhav will undergo a special training program designed by the BCCI, focusing on both technical drills and match-specific scenarios. His childhood coach, Manish Ojha, explained that the BCCI is already preparing the youngster to fill the void left by retiring senior cricketers and that this training goes beyond just the upcoming Australia challenge. "BCCI is looking ahead. The senior players are gradually retiring, and to fill that vacuum, the next batch of youngsters must be fully ready. This training for Vaibhav is part of that process. We pick boys one by one and prepare them accordingly for the demands of international cricket," he said. This development around Vaibhav comes amid ongoing speculation about the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. While a Dainik Jagran report hinted that the upcoming Australia tour could mark their final international appearances—with their ODI careers and chances in the 2027 World Cup hinging on their domestic form—a BCCI official told PTI that the board is currently focused on the Asia Cup and preparations for next year's T20 World Cup and would never make such a significant decision hastily. Vaibhav's Bengaluru stint is expected to last only a week before he rejoins the India U-19 camp for the next assignment. Ojha added that the batter's next goal is to bring consistency to his scores in longer formats. 'He has the ability to attack from the very first ball, which is a huge positive in T20s and one-dayers. You've seen it in the IPL, U-19, and Vijay Hazare Trophy. But in longer formats, his performance level drops compared to white-ball cricket. The aim is to raise that consistency—if he plays 10 innings, 7-8 should be impactful,' he said.

Key is to let to team shine first, says Hockey team vice captain Hardik Singh

I think we are back to how we were ahead of the Paris Olympics last year,' says star midfielder Hardik Singh during a quick chat after what has been an unusual day for the Indian hockey team – they've just finished playing a casual game of Kabaddi with the Gujarat Giants at the Sports Authority of India grounds – a day before they board flights to Australia to compete in a four-match series. He adds, 'Everyone has been focusing on their diet and physical form. We've had to keep in mind that Australia plays very physical matches and their mindset is really strong – we need to match that.' Having won the 2022 Asian Games and scored a bronze at the last two Olympics, the last few years have been big for the Indian men's field hockey team, which Singh has been vice-captaining since 2023. Reflecting on his personal growth as a leader, the Arjuna awardee says, 'I've seen many captains in my junior and senior term years like PR Sreejesh, Manpreet Singh and Harmanpreet Singh, so I've learnt what happens in captaincy and how to treat juniors – appreciating them can really raise confidence and boost the game. But in this team, we don't need a single leader, but five to six in every match who can show the team how things are to be done.' On leading alongside captain Harmanpreet Singh, he notes that it's all about balance. 'I know him from a very long time on and off the field. We have that kind of friendship where, inside the field, I know sometimes I can be aggressive and he can be a little cool, or the other way round. You always need that combination for the team,' he says. While the nation celebrated the team's bronze win at last year's Paris Olympics, Singh considers it a loss, saying, 'In my view, we may have won a medal, but we didn't win the semi-final. The feeling of winning gold is something else. I'm not saying I'm sad but this is how you get competitiveness in an athlete, how you learn and improve – by asking more from yourself.' How does he overcome losses like this? The key is to stay grounded. 'I'm still learning how to overcome disappointment but I've been getting better. The key is to keep going. You should never take a loss to your heart and a win to your head,' shares Singh. With the 2026 World Cup right around the corner, and the team set to play in the Hero Asia Cup, which is a world cup qualifier within a week of the Australia tour, Singh eyes the top prize. He sees it as a personal comeback as well as one for the team. 'In my first World Cup, I was an amateur and in the second, I got injured and didn't get a chance to play. However, the most important thing is to let the team shine first, and win this World Cup,' Singh adds.

NFL Trade Rumors: Tua Tagovailoa's poor performances ignite speculation over Tyreek Hill's future in Miami

Tyreek Hill's future with the Miami Dolphins is uncertain as injuries and offensive struggles fuel trade speculation (Getty Images) As the Miami Dolphins gear up for the upcoming NFL season, the future of star wide receiver Tyreek Hill remains one of the league's hottest talking points. While the Dolphins maintain they have 'no intention' of trading the All-Pro receiver, persistent injuries and recent on-field struggles are keeping trade speculation alive — and NFL teams are watching closely. Tyreek Hill's injury absence magnifies Dolphins' offensive weaknesses During joint practices with the Chicago Bears, Miami's offense, led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, looked disjointed without Hill on the field. Known for his unmatched speed and ability to stretch defenses, Hill's absence due to an oblique injury was felt immediately. Offensive line captain Terron Armstead admitted the void was significant, explaining that Hill's ability to pull defenders and create openings is a cornerstone of Miami's playbook. Without him, the offense lacked rhythm, and Chicago's defense exploited those gaps with ease. The impact of Hill's absence was most visible in Tua's performance. After a steady camp with only one interception, Tagovailoa threw three picks against the Bears in a single session. Chicago's defensive tactic of crowding the middle exposed Miami's lack of explosiveness on the perimeter — a role Hill normally dominates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like With temperatures hitting 95°F, this is the mini air conditioner everyone's buying in the U.S News of the Discovery Undo NFL teams circling as Dolphins' situation grows tense Despite Miami's firm public stance, multiple NFL teams are reportedly monitoring the situation, ready to pounce if the Dolphins reconsider. Hill's unique ability to change a game with a single play makes him a highly coveted asset, and his trade value could soar if Miami's offense continues to sputter. If Hill's injury lingers or if the Dolphins' offense stalls early in the season, front office pressure could mount to explore offers. Miami has hinted that it would take a 'significant package' to move Hill, but the right deal could change everything. Also Read: "All he wants to do..." Mike Tomlin opens up on secret offseason discussions that made Aaron Rodgers' Pittsburgh signing inevitable For now, the Dolphins are standing their ground — but the combination of Tua's uneven practice performances, Hill's uncertain health, and growing league-wide interest is setting the stage for one of the NFL's most intriguing preseason storylines.
