Iraq's Parliament Speaker urges UN to intervene in Gaza war
On Friday, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani called on UN Secretary-General António Guterres to take immediate action to halt what he described as the "genocidal annihilation" of civilians in Gaza.
In a letter, al-Mashhadani condemned the international community's inaction, accusing Israel of systematically targeting unarmed civilians—particularly children killed while waiting in food lines. 'The world watches in silence as this massacre unfolds,' he wrote, calling the crisis 'a humanitarian disgrace.'
He urged the UN to uphold its founding principles, citing the Charter's pledge to defend human dignity and prevent the horrors of war. 'If the UN fails to act,' he warned, 'it risks becoming complicit through silence.'
The appeal comes as Gaza's Health Ministry reports more than 59,000 killed and 143,000 wounded since the war began. Aid remains blocked, medical systems are overwhelmed, and entire neighborhoods lie in ruins.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts have faltered. Repeated attempts at the UN Security Council to pass binding resolutions have been vetoed, despite urgent warnings from humanitarian organizations and rights groups.

Israeli Army drafts 54,000 Haredi youth
Shafaq News – Middle East On Wednesday, the Israeli army announced it had intensified efforts against military draft evasion among ultra-Orthodox Jews, completing the distribution of approximately 80,000 enlistment orders. This marks an escalation that has further deepened the ongoing controversy over military exemptions for Haredi youth. According to Israeli media outlets, the army is preparing for large-scale arrests across the country in coordination with the police. Channel 12 reported that the army has recently issued an additional 54,000 initial draft notices to Haredi men. These come on top of 24,000 summonses already dispatched during the 2024 recruitment year. The new wave of orders targets individuals between the ages of 17.5 and 28, who no longer qualify for exemption under the religious 'Torah study' clause, following the expiration of the previous law. In response, the military has moved to shorten the timeframe for issuing arrest warrants against draft evaders. Under army regulations, individuals who evade service for more than six weeks may face imprisonment of up to 540 days or be required to serve an additional year beyond their original military term.

Israeli fire kills over 80 in Gaza aid lines
Shafaq News – Gaza On Wednesday, more than 80 Palestinians waiting for aid in Gaza were killed by Israeli army fire, medical sources in the enclave told Shafaq News on Tuesday. The Government Media Office in Gaza reported that the Al-Sudaniya area, northwest of Gaza City, alone witnessed the deaths of 51 people and injuries to 648 others as they waited for humanitarian assistance. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) described the situation as 'a completely man-made famine,' criticizing the practice of airdropping aid as dangerous and unnecessary. Meanwhile, in the United States, 93 Democratic members of the US House of Representatives sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging the administration to ensure the delivery of aid to Palestinians safely and effectively. They called it both 'a moral obligation and a necessity for Israel's security.' The lawmakers also requested an investigation into the structure and operations of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
