No Rebel's Romance but Stellenbosch among overseas Champions & Chater Cup entries
Rebel's Romance will not defend his Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) crown but three overseas runners could provide a difficult challenge for the locals.
Godolphin's star globetrotter left Five G Patch and La City Blanche trailing when hosing up in the race 12 months ago but there could still be British interest in the race thanks to Dubai Honour.
William Haggas' three-time Australian Group One winner was last seen in Hong Kong finishing second to Giavellotto in the Group One Hong Kong Vase (2,400m), where he was ahead of another potential raider – Stellenbosch.

That rival was the $3.2 favourite for the race and the Japanese filly will need to bounce back from a disappointing return in the Group One Osaka Hai (2,200m) at Hanshin.
Should she return to the form of her win in the Group One Oka Sho (2,000m) or her second in the Group One Yushun Himba (2,400m), she would be very difficult to beat for trainer Sakae Kunieda.
The fly in the ointment could be the Joseph O'Brien-trained Al Riffa, winner of the Group One Grosser Preis von Berlin (2,400m) and second to Epsom Derby winner City Of Troy in the Group One Eclipse Stakes (2,200m) at Sandown last year.
He has done his fair share of travelling in his short career and is versatile to all surfaces, so would not mind if any rain came – as can be the case.
Hong Kong's biggest hope is set to be Voyage Bubble, who is aiming to sweep the Hong Kong Triple Crown after wins in the Group One Stewards' Cup (1,600m) and the Hong Kong Gold Cup (2,000m) this season.
He suffered a shock defeat in Sunday's Champions Mile at Sha Tin when unable to get past the gutsy Red Lion, who upstaged him at 89-1 odds for trainer John Size.
The step up in distance raises question marks about Ricky Yiu Poon-fai's six-year-old, who is yet to go past the 2,000m distance in his career to date.

The Swedish international, who was the second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League last season, has not featured for the Magpies in pre-season or their opening game of the campaign, a 0-0 draw away at Aston Villa on Saturday. Liverpool have reportedly had a £110 million bid rejected for the 25-year-old, with Newcastle holding out for a British transfer record fee of up to £150 million. Isak released a statement on Tuesday after deciding not to appear at the Professional Footballers' Association awards event despite being selected in the Premier League 2024/25 team of the year. "I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors," Isak posted on Instagram. "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading," he added. "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself." According to reports, Isak had been promised an improved contract only for northeast side Newcastle to hold off due to pressures of meeting financial sustainability rules. Newcastle responded with a statement late Tuesday saying that while they were saddened by Isak's comments, they could yet welcome the 25-year-old back into the squad. "We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening," the club wrote. "We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. "We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views." The statement added: "This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates." Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022, including the winner against Liverpool in the League Cup final earlier this year that ended Newcastle's 70-year wait to win a domestic trophy. Liverpool have already spent around £300 million overhauling a squad that romped to the Premier League title last season. But they have also recouped over £200 million in sales and are still in the market for attacking options after the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez and tragic death of Diogo Jota. Any deal is unlikely to be done before the two clubs face off in their next Premier League game on Monday at St James' Park. (AFP)

Shogo Yasuda is hoping his star Danon Decile can climb the mountain to beat British, Irish and French challengers and win the Group One International Stakes (2,051m) race at York on Wednesday. Living up to its name, the International Stakes has attracted top-class horses from across the globe and Danon Decile, who will be ridden by Keita Tosaki, looks to have a brilliant chance. The four-year-old has been absent since a brilliant performance to down multiple Group One winner Calandagan and win the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic (2,410m) in April, where he quickened clear by a length and a quarter. HK racing off-season update: Harry Bentley gets Group One call up, Karis Teetan heads to Japan

Photos: Kenneth Chan Alexis Badel will also compete in the World All-StarJockeys at Sapporo Racecourse this weekend Harry Bentley will press pause on his holiday to ride Spicy Marg in Friday's Group One Nunthorpe Stakes (1,000m) at York. The 33-year-old was back in the UK after a 31-winner campaign in Hong Kong last season but has received an unexpected call-up for one of the feature races of this week's Ebor Festival at York. The Nunthorpe commonly sees the younger horses take on their elders and Spicy Marg, just a two-year-old, will carry a tiny weight as she bids to become the first two-year-old since Kingsgate Native in 2007 to win the prize. Bentley will have to get down to just 8st 2lb to take the ride, but he did not need too much convincing by trainer Michael Bell to take the ride. I'm doing light weights very often in Hong Kong, so getting down to this sort of weight is fairly routine for me.' With the ride secured, Bentley is also hunting around for further opportunities at York this week before his return to Hong Kong. 'I'm certainly trying to get some more opportunities – I'm hoping to ride on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and I've got my agent Paul Clarke on the case to try and further bolster my book of rides,' added Bentley. Badel and Teetan join All-Star line-up in Japan Alexis Badel and Karis Teetan will compete at the World All-Star Jockeys (WASJ) at Sapporo Racecourse in Japan this weekend. Badel, who has been based out in Japan during the off season, will also be joined by Craig Williams, who rode Cap Ferrat to Group One glory in Hong Kong this season. It will be another competition for Teetan this off season, with the Mauritian also forming part of the Rest of the World team at the Shergar Cup meeting at Ascot earlier this month alongside Hugh Bowman. Joao Moreira won the event 12 months ago, with Teetan finishing fifth and Vincent Ho Chak-yiu finishing eighth. Bowman and Teetan fall foul of Ascot stewards The enormous difference between the whip rules in Hong Kong and the UK was highlighted last week when Hugh Bowman and Karis Teetan were banned for a combined 20 days for breaching the rules. Bowman, who won the Silver Saddle after being the leading rider at the meeting, was hit with 12 days for using his whip once above the permitted level, in the incorrect place and without giving one of his horses enough time to respond. Teetan was slapped with an eight-day ban for using his whip once above the permitted level.
