Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin urged the State Government to fix damaged roads in his constituency fairly and without political bias. He said many roads in his area, including Bukit Garam, Sukau and the main route from Sandakan to Lahad Datu through Kinabatangan, are in very poor condition. Bung, who is also Kinabatangan Member of Parliament, said the roads have many potholes and are dangerous to drivers, with no repairs done so far. 'I have not seen any signs that the roads in my area will be fixed. This raises concerns that they are being left out because of politics,' he said, in a statement, Tuesday. Bung said road repairs should be done based on need, not based on who the elected representative is. He also reminded the State Government that it is its duty, through the Public Works Department (JKR), to repair and maintain roads for the safety of the public. 'When roads are not fixed, it causes a lot of problems for the people, and makes them feel like the Government does not care about their basic needs,' he said. He urged the Government to begin road repair works immediately in Kinabatangan, especially at the Bukit Garam roundabout and the junction going to Sukau. 'Don't use roads as a political tool. Everyone deserves good and safe roads, no matter who they vote for,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ex-Safa Kunak DP says football development in district has deteriorated

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tabir Text Size: Describing the announcement by Safa Kunak President, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu (pic), who resigned on Sunday, Citra said he was 'not surprised' by the president's withdrawal. KUNAK: Citra Masadi, who used to be the Deputy President of Safa Kunak, said he stepped down from his role in the local football body over a year ago. Describing the announcement by Safa Kunak President, Dato' Sri Anil Sandhu, who resigned on Sunday, Citra said he was 'not surprised' by the president's withdrawal. Advertisement Anil made a statement last Sunday while attending the final match between Mostyn FC and Uncle Chang FC at the Kunak town field, organised by Safa Kunak. 'I resigned from the position of Deputy President earlier, in March last year, and after that, the district Safa continued to be managed by the existing committee members,' said Citra to the Daily Express in a brief message on Tuesday. Citra, however, did not elaborate further on the reasons for his action but noted that the development of football, particularly the teams in Kunak, has been deteriorating over the past year. Recently, Kunak ranked fourth in the men's team football qualification round for the Tawau zone in the 11th Sabah Games (Saga-XI) 2025. Meanwhile, there are rumours that the Treasurer and a Vice President of Safa Kunak have also stepped down from their roles. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Three blocks of pre-war Bongawan shops razed

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: The fire that destroyed Bongawan old shops. BONGAWAN: Several blocks of old shop lots built in 1939 were destroyed in a fire that broke out early Tuesday, also damaging several vehicles. The fire was reported at about 5.30am. Advertisement Kimanis Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Nelson Ponji said the station received an emergency call at 5.38am via the MER999 hotline. 'A total of 24 personnel were dispatched to the scene, comprising seven from the Kimanis station, eight from Papar and seven from Beaufort,' he told Daily Express. He said the operation was supported by four police officers and supervised by Papar BBP Chief Rozlan Osman. Firefighting assets mobilised included one LFRT from Kimanis with seven personnel, one FRT from Papar with six personnel, one LFRT from Beaufort with five personnel, one EMRS from Papar with two personnel, one Vigo from Beaufort with two personnel and one Vigo from Papar with one personnel. Nelson said the fire involved three blocks of old two-storey non-permanent shop buildings. 'The first block, consisting of eight shop units measuring 30x80 feet each, was completely destroyed, while the second and third blocks, each with four shop units measuring 30x60 feet per unit, were also gutted,' he said. Firefighters carried out suppression efforts using three 600-foot hose lines with six nozzles, drawing water from both fire engines and nearby hydrants. No casualties were reported. The cause of the fire and estimated losses are still under investigation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Solo or coalition' decision July

Published on: Wednesday, June 11, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 11, 2025 By: Mohd Nazllie Zainul Text Size: Masidi at the launching SMJ Energy's Education CSR Programme at SMK Kanibongan in Pitas, yesterday. Kota Kinabalu: The question of whether the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will contest solo in the imminent 17th State Election (PRN17) or maintain its partnership with Pakatan Harapan (PH) is expected to be answered by early July at the latest, said GRS Sec-Gen Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. He said the decision would likely be finalised during the GRS Supreme Council meeting, which is expected to convene either later this month or early next month. Advertisement Masidi also confirmed that although GRS has yet to make an official decision on its election strategy, GRS Chairman cum Sabah's Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor has met with leaders of the coalition's component parties and held informal talks with PH leaders. 'We haven't made a final decision yet because the Supreme Council has not met. However, I believe the President has already met with all the component party presidents. 'I'm confident he has also held informal discussions with PH leaders. One thing is certain—if not this month, then by early next month we will know,' he told the media in Pitas on Tuesday. The GRS Supreme Council is composed of the presidents of the coalition's eight component parties: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), GRS, PBS, Star Sabah, SAPP, Usno, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS). 'He (Hajiji) has indicated that GRS is inclined to continue the PH-GRS cooperation, which has formed the foundation of the unity government in both Sabah and Putrajaya. 'If I'm not mistaken, the Chief Minister has repeatedly emphasised his desire for the PH-GRS cooperation to continue in the coming election. 'The main reason is to ensure political stability,' he said. It was reported that Sabah Pakatan may agree to a seat-sharing formula with GRS and Sabah Barisan helmed by Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. However, GRS and Sabah Barisan are expected to cross swords as there is no love lost between Hajiji and Bung, following a failed attempt by the latter to unseat the GRS government last January. Bung had pulled Sabah Barisan out of the GRS coalition in 2023 after a fallout with Hajiji. Bung is said to be courting other parties like Parti Warisan led by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) led by Priscella Peter, the daughter of its jailed president Datuk Peter Anthony. But Warisan and KDM do not seem keen on any tie-up, with both publicly stating their intention to go it solo. GRS component parties like Sabah STAR, SAPP and Usno prefer GRS to go solo, although Hajiji was inclined to work with Sabah Pakatan. Warisan has decided to opt out of any pact in Sabah although it is a partner of the federal unity government. Some predict that KDM could seal a pact with either Barisan or Warisan if they get the number and choices of seats, with the party eyeing at least 18 Kadazandusun, Murut and Rungus seats. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
