East-West Highway upgrade on the table, says Perak MB
IPOH: The East-West Highway that connects Perak's Gerik with Kelantan's Jeli is in need of massive upgrades to improve its condition and safety, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
The Perak Mentri Besar said state infrastructure committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has been tasked with preparing a working paper detailing things required to improve the road.
'It's high time we look into the highway's alignment and condition,' he said in a press conference after opening Perak Export Day here yesterday.
'The highway was built during (Malaysia's second prime minister) Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's time to stop incursions by communists.
'Mohammad Nizar and the Public Works Department will need to review and list down the things needed to be done, be it to widen the road, the construction materials needed, lines on the road or street lights,' he said, adding that some stretches of the road could no longer be patched up.
Fifteen Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students were killed after a bus crashed on the highway on Monday.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said in a Facebook post on Tuesday that the site of the tragedy was already earmarked for rehabilitation this year with an allocation of RM55mil.
Saarani said a new hospital is also needed in Gerik to provide treatment to victims due to the high frequency of accidents on the highway.
'Gerik needs a new hospital as well as experts, staff and facilities. A separate paper will be prepared by state health committee A. Sivanesan on this,' he said, adding that both papers will be forwarded to the federal government for consideration to be included in the next Malaysia Plan.
'I will also speak to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 15 about the proposals to improve the situation near the highway,' he added.

Works Ministry pushing for increased funding for road repairs
KUALA LUMPUR: The Works Ministry is pushing for a bigger budget to speed up repairs and upgrades on the country's most battered roads and ageing highway stretches, says Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi. The Works Minister said the ministry has, over the years, sought greater funding for road repairs and upgrading works. 'We have done our study on this and we are aware that we need a budget that is way greater than what is allocated annually to carry out such works. It has been our main aim and we hope the funds will be allocated. 'It is not just for federal roads but all roads nationwide,' he said after chairing a dialogue session on the upcoming Budget 2026 between the Works Ministry and stakeholders of the construction industry at the Public Works Department here yesterday. Nanta said the dialogue session was an important platform for the ministry in brainstorming ideas and receiving feedback directly from industry players. He said this was to ensure that Budget 2026, which would be tabled on Oct 10, is holistic and responsive to the needs of the construction sector. Nanta said about 150 officials from various government agencies, the construction industry and other relevant parties attended the dialogue where they shared their views and suggestions. 'The feedback was constructive and valuable. All relevant suggestions will be considered in the preparation of Budget 2026. We may not be able to include every area in next year's budget but the crucial ones will be prioritised. 'Our core plan which was also emphasised by the attendees is the use of building information modelling (BIM) and the industrialised building system (IBS) to excel in the construction industry with the use of science and technology. 'The input from various parties of the industry is important to ensure Budget 2026 can address current challenges and propel growth in the construction sector towards a sustainable and competitive direction,' he said, adding that challenges faced by industry players from the rising cost of construction materials was also discussed. Nanta said among the discussions that took place at the dialogue was on maintenance and upgrading of current infrastructure, the empowerment and capacity development of local contractors including female contractors, adaptation of building technology, eco-friendly practices and good governance. On the delay in the completion of the West Coast Expressway at stretches involving Banting, Klang and Shah Alam, he said the issue involved the acquisition of land and the matter is being addressed by the state government.

‘Let's keep politics off the flagpole'
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Parties planning to gather at the Penang shop embroiled in a national flag controversy should halt their plans to avoid risks of confrontation, says the MCA president. Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) said there is nothing to be gained by having a show of force tomorrow at the shop where the owner is accused of hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down. In telling Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke to call off their plans to get members to gather at the shop, he said nothing good would come out of it. Dr Wee was referring to DAP's plan to gather tomorrow at the shop in Kepala Batas that became the focus of controversy after the national flag was held upside down. Dr Akmal had earlier said he would give the authorities until today to act and if they fail to do so, he would give lessons to the shop owner on how to hoist the flag properly. Following that threat, DAP said it will be mobilising its members in Penang to defend the hardware store from 'troublemakers'. In another Facebook post after that, Dr Akmal responded to the DAP plan saying that he would be happy to attend the event tomorrow. However, Dr Wee criticised DAP's plan, warning that it could draw politically-charged crowds to a location already under intense public scrutiny, raising the likelihood of clashes between those with opposing views. 'While the stated intention may be to show solidarity, the reality is that such action will drastically increase the risk of direct confrontation,' Dr Wee said in a Facebook post yesterday. Dr Wee said public order must be prioritised over political posturing. 'Let us be clear – this is a far greater threat to public order than any statement made online. 'Once tempers flare on the ground, even a minor spark can escalate into something none of us want to see. 'The role of the authorities is not to wait for the clash and then respond – it is to prevent it from happening at all,' he said. He urged the police to act firmly to ensure Dr Akmal does not proceed with his planned visit to Penang 'under the current tense atmosphere'. 'The correct approach would be for DAP's 40 MPs in government to pressure the Home Minister to ensure the police prevents this planned physical confrontation from taking place. 'Since DAP has failed to do so, I have instructed MCA Youth to lodge a police report immediately, urging the authorities to intervene and issue the necessary warnings to (Dr) Akmal to prevent his presence from escalating the situation and for DAP to cease their on-the-ground posturing,' Dr Wee said. He stressed that the safety of the people and public harmony must come before 'political mileage or theatrics'. 'MCA will not stand by and watch as our streets are turned into potential battlegrounds. 'We call on all parties to exercise restraint, and on the police to act decisively now before we are forced to deal with the consequences later,' he added. Last night, the Selangor MCA Youth has lodged a police report at the Petaling Jaya IPD against Dr Akmal and Terengganu Umno Youth over a social media post showing the Jalur Gemilang with only 12 stripes instead of the official 14. The report also cited Dr Akmal's earlier statement and reported plans to visit the shop in Kepala Batas to 'teach' the owner how to display the flag properly. A total of six MCA Youth divisions – Petaling Jaya, Bangi, Penang, Hulu Langat, Sekinchan and Pandan – filed four reports. Earlier in the day, Dr Wee had criticised Dr Akmal for threatening to school the shop owner. He said political intimidation was the wrong approach because it risked turning patriotism into fear. 'No flags means no mistakes and that would be a sad outcome for our Merdeka spirit,' the Ayer Hitam MP added. Dr Wee urged leaders to inspire patriotism through education, example and lawful action rather than acting as 'self-appointed enforcers' or turning mistakes into political stunts. 'Let the authorities do their job, and let us keep politics off the flagpole,' he said.

Sabah 40pct revenue claim: High Court to decide on Oct 3
KOTA KINABALU: The High Court will deliver its decision on Oct 3 on a judicial review application concerning Sabah's constitutional right to 40 per cent of the revenue derived from the state. Sabah Law Society (SLS) Immediate Past President Datuk Roger Chin said the date was set during a Zoom hearing on Tuesday. "This judicial review is a historic and significant legal action concerning Sabah's constitutional rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Federal Constitution. "The matter has attracted substantial public interest as it addresses long-standing issues of revenue entitlement and fiscal autonomy for the state of Sabah," Chin said. He invited the public, civil society organisations, and the media to attend the open court proceedings. "The proceedings will be conducted in open court, reflecting the principles of transparency and public accountability in the administration of justice," he said. The SLS filed the judicial review against the Federal Government in June 2022. Leave was granted by the High Court in November of the same year. The Federal Government's subsequent appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court were both dismissed, in June 2024 and October 2024, respectively. This sent the case back to the High Court for a full hearing on its merits. In July, a High Court judge had set Aug 7 for an e-review to provide further directions. The SLS was represented by counsel Jeyan Marimuttu, while the Federal Government was represented by Senior Federal Counsel (SFC) Ahmad Hanir Hambaly @ Arwi, and the Sabah State Government's representative was State Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Soh.
