The Best Resort in California Is Nowhere Near the Beach—but Travelers Love It for the Farm-fresh Food and Wine

When it comes to California resorts, it's clear that T+L readers love the state's wine countries, from Napa Valley down to the Central Coast—and the beaches lining the Pacific. And it's no wonder. All of these regions have become synonymous with an idealized, laid-back version of life in the Golden State, where the sun shines over neat rows of vineyards, surfers catch endless waves, and where natural beauty is everywhere you look. Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe—to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 180,000 T+L readers completed the 2025 survey. A total of more than 657,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.). Hotels were classified as either resort hotel, city hotel, inn, or safari lodge based on their location and amenities, and they were specifically rated on the criteria below: Rooms/facilities Location Service Food Value For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

In Montecito, near Santa Barbara, San Ysidro Ranch (this year's runner-up) has gained icon status, having opened in 1893. It's played host to everyone from Winston Churchill to John and Jackie Kennedy on its sprawling, cottage-dotted property. One reader, when visiting with her mother, noted, 'Every staff member treated us with kindness and respect. From the moment we entered the property, we were amazed at all the small details."
Further up the coast, the natural beauty of Big Sur is complemented by another reader favorite, Alila Ventana Big Sur (No. 11), an excellent adults-only resort. "It's all-inclusive, and the food is incredible, as is the service at the restaurant,' said one reader.
And down near San Diego, Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa (No. 5) in Rancho Santa Fe had particularly enthusiastic fans. As one repeat visitor to the property put it: 'Rancho Valencia is hands-down my favorite resort in the U.S.. It kind of feels like a secret, but arriving at the gate and being greeted by one of the impeccably mannered staff, you know exactly where you are. It's heaven!'

'The rooms are beautiful and the tavern and restaurant have been fabulously restored to showcase all of the history of the property.'
— T + L Reader
While it only opened in 2023, this year's winner, The Inn at Mattei's Tavern, Auberge Resorts Collection, has quickly become a reader favorite. 'A fantastic, understated, luxurious hotel,' is how one reader described this 6.5-acre property, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards in the little town of Los Olivos, a two-hour drive north of Los Angeles. 'The rooms are beautiful and the tavern and restaurant have been fabulously restored to showcase all of the history of the property.' Being in the heart of Central California's agricultural land, the culinary offerings are naturally a big part of the draw here. The hotel's primary restaurant, The Tavern, is an ode to regional produce and ingredients, many of which are grown on-site, and as you'd expect, there's a wide-ranging wine list showing off the best of California.

Jessica Alba turns heads in sizzling bikini photos as romance rumors swirl with ‘Top Gun: Maverick' star

Jessica Alba is embracing her single life with confidence. The "Honey" star showed off her bikini body as she soaked up the sun in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Alba, 44, flaunted her toned physique in a series of tropical getaway photos. In the first snap, she sported a chic light pink bikini paired with a loose matching beach cover-up. She completed her summer look with several silver jewelry pieces. In her next head-turning swimsuit photos, Alba donned a brown and white swimsuit set and accessorized with brown sunglasses. She posed in front of palm leaves and was photographed relaxing by the pool. "A dreamy few days at one of my favorite places," Alba wrote in her Instagram caption, tagging Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection. The "Sin City" actress continued her carefree vacation, as she slipped into a cheeky brown bikini while putting her fit physique on display. Alba was all smiles as she lounged on a boat and posed with the picturesque background. Alba also shared quotes and other highlights from her holiday. "One of the healthiest habits to learn: Focus on flowing, not forcing," one text read. She snapped photos of her meals poolside, while she sipped on drinks and captured the boat sails with sunny blue skies. Alba appeared to have a spiritual moment with card readings and crystals posted on her vacation photo series. Her tropical retreat comes days after she was spotted boarding a plane headed back to Los Angeles from Cancun with "Top Gun: Maverick" actor Danny Ramirez, according to TMZ. The outlet reported that the two spent time together in the sun-soaked town. The "Fantastic Four" actress appeared to be enjoying a carefree summer following her divorce filing from longtime husband Cash Warren. Months after ending her 16-year marriage, Alba is reportedly embracing the single life. Alba has been spotted out and about, but she's not tied to anyone romantically, sources told People. "She's been getting a lot of attention since the divorce. She's flattered and definitely enjoying being single again," a source shared. "She's gone on some dates, but it's nothing serious — she's focused on herself and her kids. She's not interested in a relationship right now." The Honest Company founder announced her split from Warren in January after nearly two decades together. Alba and Warren share three young children together: Honor, Haven and Hayes.

What if Airbnb Builds the Killer AI Travel Search App?

Airbnb is hiring an engineer for an AI-powered natural language search product. If the tech delivers, it could create new creative pressure in shaping how people choose where to go and stay. Airbnb is preparing to rebuild its internal search engine with generative AI at the core. In a recent job posting for a search infrastructure engineer, the company outlined plans for a 'next generation search platform' designed to support 'generative AI (large language model) use cases.' Candidates with expertise in search and recommendation systems are encouraged to apply, and experience with GenAI or LLMs is listed as a preferred qualification. Search is one of the most critical components of Airbnb's business. It determines how guests discover homes and experiences, and how hosts reach customers. And while Airbnb has not made any public announcements about an AI-native search product, the technical scope and job description point to ambitions beyond incremental improvements. The listing suggests Airbnb is looking to reconstruct its core search product to accommodate AI. The new platform is described as one that will 'power different products at Airbnb,' suggesting that generative AI could become a foundational layer across the company's marketplace. In response to a request for comment, an Airbnb spokesperson said the company is 'always working to enhance the overall Airbnb experience' and is 'actively seeking talented individuals who share our mission to transform the way people travel.' Give Me a Room With a View If Airbnb succeeds in launching a functional AI-powered search system, the move could change how travelers interact with the platform. Traditional travel search engines rely on structured inputs: location, dates, price filters, and a fixed set of amenities. Generative AI has the potential to interpret natural language queries, understand user context, and return relevant results with fewer steps and less manual sorting. For example, instead of filtering by location and bedroom count, a guest might enter a query such as 'a quiet place in the mountains with fast Wi-Fi, a hot tub, and a view' – and receive listings that match even if the keywords don't align exactly. Several other travel companies have begun integrating AI tools into their platforms, including chat-based trip planning assistants and personalization features. When Data is King But Airbnb may be in a stronger position than some of its competitors to make that shift. The company has access to a large volume of structured and unstructured data: millions of listings with detailed attributes, user-generated reviews, booking behavior, search history, and messaging between hosts and guests. This data could support the training or fine-tuning of models capable of delivering more personalized and accurate search outcomes. Airbnb also owns its entire supply-side platform. Unlike online travel agencies that depend on inventory from third-party providers and hotel chains, Airbnb's listings are user-generated and directly managed on its system. That vertical integration provides a cleaner dataset and more flexibility in how results are ranked and surfaced, key advantages for any machine learning application. The introduction of a new AI-native search system could also create competitive pressure in the broader travel sector. Google, Booking Holdings, and Expedia Group have all made recent announcements about generative AI experiments, including itinerary generation and trip planning tools. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has previously hinted at AI's potential role in product discovery, referring in past earnings calls to a vision of Airbnb as a kind of intelligent travel concierge. A generative AI system could take that vision further, allowing for contextual, conversational discovery that adapts to different user intents in real time. The company has not disclosed what timeline it is working toward, what specific models it may be using, or whether it intends to partner with external AI vendors or develop proprietary solutions. The job posting does not mention OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or any of the major LLM providers by name. Beyond the Short-Term Rental What if Airbnb is thinking bigger than site search? There's a huge world of travel beyond short-term rental listings and its new experiences product. Airbnb's focus on design and its ability to attract talent put it in a position to compete in ways that other travel brands can't. Chesky also has a strong relationship with Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. They've known each other since the 2000s, first at Y Combinator, the startup accelerator. And Altman has talked about the counsel Chesky gave him at OpenAI. Airbnb has always had ambitions beyond booking a room, and the focus on AI search will help it compete against players like Expedia when it comes to airline search or any other part of the travel journey.
