The share of businesses started by women kept rising while the funding gap was stubborn
Younger women and women of color are starting more small businesses than men.
Women-owned startups made up 49% of all new businesses in 2024, up from 29% in 2019 and the highest share recorded in the past six years, per a new report from Gusto. The HR and payroll platform surveyed its users and also found that AAPI, Black, and young women were driving this trend.
Despite the risks and barriers that women face in starting their own businesses, many are choosing entrepreneurship because of the independence and autonomy it can offer, said Nich Tremper, senior economist at Gusto.
"It's seeing a shift from this necessity entrepreneurship to this opportunity entrepreneurship," said Tremper, referencing a change he saw in 2022. "So we've seen women go from saying, 'I need to start a business to make ends meet, to take care of my kids,' to, 'I want to start a business because of the benefits that it provides.'"
Even with the growth of women-owned businesses, barriers still exist for women seeking investments to start or scale their startups. As a result, many rely on financing from their personal networks and debt to launch their enterprises.
Women of color are driving entrepreneurship
Tremper said the growth of new businesses is driven by women of color who are seeking more independence and ownership of their work.
Fifty-four percent of all new AAPI- and Black-owned businesses were started by women, compared to 46% that were started by their male colleagues, per Gusto.
Social justice movements like Black Lives Matter and Stop AAPI Hate bolstered support for businesses owned by women of color, per a report published earlier this year by Wells Fargo. Tremper added that Black and AAPI women-owned businesses gained more momentum during the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Hispanic women made up 43% of new business owners compared to 56% of Hispanic men. Gusto reported that the disparity was because women-owned businesses are focused on the community and personal services sectors, while almost half of all Hispanic-owned businesses are concentrated in goods production like home remodeling or construction. Men started nearly 70% of businesses in that sector.
Younger generations of women are also reaching gender parity: More than half of the businesses created by millennials and Gen Zers were women-owned. On the other end of the spectrum, male baby boomers made up 64% of new business owners compared to 36% of boomer women.
Although it's typical for people to launch businesses in their mid- to late 30s and early 40s — after they've developed an expertise in a particular field — that trend has been changing, Tremper said.
"As women are increasingly a large share of the labor market over the last several years, millennial and Gen Z women are really starting businesses at higher levels," Tremper added.
The equity gap in business financing
Women-owned businesses earn a higher return at $0.78 for every dollar invested compared to men's $0.31, Tremper said. Additionally, women-owned businesses have seen faster revenue and employment growth in the past five years compared to businesses started by men, per Wells Fargo.
However, Tremper said there's a persistent gender gap between equity financing for women and men.
"The women who do receive this equity financing really outperform men, but they're still getting it at a lower rate," Tremper said. Women who apply for private investments are 75% less likely to receive equity funding than their male peers, per Gusto.
Gusto's research found that women largely relied on their social networks and accruing personal debt to finance their new businesses. It was more common for women to also secure private loans through collateral in their homes or vehicles, which can expose them to more financial risks.
That means that the stakes can be higher for women-owned businesses—if the founders fail, their personal finances could take a hit.
Despite these challenges and barriers, women-owned businesses are resilient and continuing to find success in the market, Tremper said.
"We're seeing these women-owned businesses coming into the economy and sticking around," he added. "They're keeping their course, they're active players in the economy."

Effort to improve transportation in Bluefield moving ahead
bluefield – A town hall meeting set for June 12 will give the Bluefield community opportunities to share ideas and ask questions about a road project aimed at making travel smoother and safer from Bluefield State University's entrances to the city's northeast side. City Manager Cecil Marson said Friday the meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. June 12 on the Bluefield State University campus. It will be conducted in the Othello Harris-Jefferson Student Center. Information gleaned from the town hall will help determine how to spend a $1.2 million federal Reconnecting Communities grant. Reconnecting Communities is a program under the U.S. Department of Transportation. 'About two years ago we submitted an application for the Reconnecting Communities Grant,' Marson said. 'It's laser-focused on the northeast end of the city and what that does, it basically takes you from (Route) 52 where the Bluefield State University entryway is and takes you all the way through the northeast end past the Grant Street Bridge down past the Hotel Thelma.' The project's goal is to improve transportation and safety between the university and Hotel Thelma, which is an historic Green Book lodging where Black travelers stayed during the segregation era. 'The whole premise behind this project is to connect that part of the city to the downtown and also rework the road infrastructure and streetscape, really clean up a lot of the stuff that borders Norfolk Southern (railyard) along that main drag of Pulaski Street, Hardy Street all the way up to Rock Street and up to the campus,' Marson said. The city will work on the project in conjunction with the West Virginia Department of Highways. People attending the June 12 town hall will meet with highways officials and engineers working on the plan. Marson said the city wants as much community participation as possible. 'Because we're going to go in there, take all of the suggestions that have gotten us to this point, have some designs and schematics of what these roads could potentially look like and really, this plan grant is to get some of the engineering done and get everything prepped so this fall, we can submit for the implementation funding,' he said. 'And that's where we get the big money and hopefully, God willing, really get some of these projects down and revamp the northeast part of town and get the roads and infrastructure everybody deserves over there, and also help reinforce the college and give them a better entryway.' Darrin Martin, president of Bluefield State University, said the project would make travel to and from the campus safer. Both the Route 52 and Rock Street entrances are difficult to use and hazardous at times. 'Obviously, you think about the entrance way to campus on both sides,' Martin said. 'This is going to make it safer for us and improve the flow of traffic.' Students, faculty and visitors entering campus at Rock Street have to navigate a sharp turn. One goal would be make this curve 'softer,' Martin said. One part of the plan which includes a roundabout at the busy Route 52 entrance would make that entry point safer as well. 'It can get dicey,' he said. 'You can look and all of a sudden a car is on top of you. This should help and make that safer.' In September 2024, the City of Bluefield was awarded a $25,748,152 in federal grants through President Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for the Safe Streets and Roads for All program. Marson said that the $1.2 million Reconnecting Communities grant is from a different federal program. 'Like the Safe Streets, all these grants kind of work this way,' Marson said. 'First, you apply for the grant because you have a project. The first portion is the planning, so you'll get a funding amount — that was $1.2 million for us — then you have to resubmit again for implementation. Implementation is where construction comes in and we're not there yet on this grant.' The project is big because it has been a long time since the city's northeast side has seen a major investment, Marson said. 'It's deserving. It needs it,' he said. Can JPMorgan be unionized? Employees turn to their peers at Wells Fargo for advice.
A budding movement is taking shape to unionize staffers at JPMorgan Chase, America's biggest bank by assets. If the yearslong unionization effort at Wells Fargo is any indication, they could have a long road ahead. Last week, JPMorgan's organizers hosted a virtual meeting with a unionizer who was involved in Wells Fargo's effort to "share lessons learned," according to an email shared with members earlier this week. The Wells Fargo drive, which is also supported by a coalition called the Committee for Better Banks, has stretched on for two years with little success. The meeting resulted in the following advice, according to a post on the JPMC Workers Alliance's official website: "Build trust before going public." "Use natural workplace conversations (e.g. breaks, lunch, text conversations) to test the waters and build confidence." "Talk outside of work with colleagues to gauge their sentiment." "Keep management in the dark about the process." "Push back against illegal management activity. Managers may not *SPIT: Surveil, Promise, Interfere, or Threaten with respect to unionizing activity or outcomes — but they may not know this." "Reframe the risks to increase confidence: The status quo is the real hazard. Would they fire the whole department?" JPMorgan's unionization effort was spawned in large part by the bank's return-to-office policies. Earlier this year, JPMorgan summoned the roughly 40% of its workers who were still on a COVID-era hybrid work schedule back to their desks five days a week, kicking off complaints from employees of the Polaris campus, a major technology hub for the firm. Unlike JPMorgan's investment bankers, tech workers had been working from home a couple of days a week. It's unclear how many JPMorgan workers have agreed to unionize as a result, but the JPMC Workers Alliance website boasts members from a number of US states, including New York, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, as well as multiple cities in the United Kingdom. To build support, JPMorgan's organizers have been handing out flyers and hosting events, including a recent pizza party at JPMorgan's massive Polaris campus in Columbus, Ohio, which attracted hundreds of employees. New members are vetted by a group of organizers responsible for confirming their identities and welcoming them to the alliance's group chat on Discord, a messaging app popular with video gamers. The event drew an estimated 250 to 300 workers, said a JPMorgan employee affiliated with the union who requested anonymity to protect his job. As employees lined up to grab a slice, organizers approached them to discuss the labor movement and its goals, this person said. "Happy International Workers Day," read the flyers, which were viewed by Business Insider. "Did your leadership thank you today? You deserve better." The handouts asked questions like: "Have you had to stand in the rain waiting for the shuttle?" "Was 30 days enough notice for you to find child care before RFTO?" The acronym refers to the full-time return to work. "Have you struggled to find an open desk?"
