Rested Thunder prepare to host battle-tested Nuggets in Game 1
The Denver Nuggets are coming off a grueling seven-game series against the Clippers that ended just Saturday night.
That contrast in schedules may be a factor as the Thunder and Nuggets meet in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinals on Monday night in Oklahoma City.
Both teams are looking to advance further than they did last season, when both lost in the second round -- the Thunder to Dallas and Denver to Minnesota.
The series will feature two of the three finalists for the NBA Most Valuable Player award, which figures to be announced at some point during the series. Oklahoma City's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Denver's Nikola Jokic are the finalists.
Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 30.3 points and 6.5 assists per game in four meetings against the Nuggets this season.
While the Thunder swept Memphis in the first round, including winning the series opener by 51, Gilgeous-Alexander was slow to get going against the Grizzlies.
But after shooting just 35.3 percent in the first three games of that series, Gilgeous-Alexander rebounded to score 38 on 13-of-24 shooting in the series clincher on April 26.
Jokic, a three-time MVP, averaged 24 points, 11.6 rebounds and 10.1 assists in the Nuggets' first-round series.
Jokic had a pair of triple-doubles against the Thunder this season, and scored 35 on 15-of-20 shooting in their last meeting March 10.
The series also features the present -- and future -- of the Thunder franchise against its past.
Gilgeous-Alexander came to Oklahoma City in July 2019 after spending his rookie season with the Clippers. Less than a week later, Russell Westbook -- who along with Kevin Durant helped the Thunder become a playoff regular -- was traded to Houston.
Westbrook no longer has the same explosiveness that made him a triple-double machine, but he showed in the first round that there is still gas left in the tank.
In the first-round series, Westbrook shot nearly 42 percent from beyond the arc and averaged 13.8 points per game off the bench.
"You have to account for the fact that he's gonna come in the game ready to rock and the pace of the game is gonna go up," Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. "He's gonna be trying to make something happen right off the bat and you can't be flat-footed."
Westbrook played a key role in Game 7 against the Clippers, helping Denver create some separation in the second quarter.
"My ability to be a force of nature on the floor is what I pride myself on," Westbrook said. "So, whatever that looks like -- it may be a turnover, it may be a missed shot, but it may be a steal, it may be a dunk, it may be a missed three, it may be a made three. It's gonna be all of that. So, just take it for how it comes, and whatever happens you go with it."
The teams split their four games in the regular season, including splitting back-to-back games in early March in Oklahoma City in their last meetings.
The Thunder won 127-103 on March 9 with the Nuggets winning 140-127 a day later.
But all of those games came before Denver's surprising late-season move to fire coach Michael Malone.
Daigneault said he expected the Nuggets to look different than they did against the Clippers.
"I mean, good data point," he said of studying Denver's first-round series. "It gives you a good understanding of how they play against the Clippers, but it doesn't give you a good understanding of how they play against us. This series will have its own face."
The series will be the first playoff meeting between the teams since 2011, when Oklahoma City -- with the help of nearly 24 points per game from Westbrook -- beat the Nuggets in five games.

Updated 53-man roster prediction following Ravens' preseason win over the Cowboys
Baltimore defeated Dallas 31-13 in the second preseason game, and we're looking at an updated 53-man roster prediction with a few changes and some surprises Don't look now, but a deep Ravens roster is 2-0 in the preseason despite Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry not taking a single snap on offense. After a shaky start that included a pick six, Cooper Rush settled down, the Ravens' rushing attack was solid, and Zach Orr's ever-improving defense found dominance from key rookies and select veterans as Baltimore dominated Dallas, 31-13 at AT&T Stadium on Saturday night. Talented rookie Tyler Loop kicked five field goals, and running back D'Ernest Johnson ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Ravens (2-0) as Baltimore beat Dallas in a preseason game on Saturday night. The 53-man roster deadline in the NFL is Tuesday, August 27, at 4 p.m. ET. This is the date and time by which all 32 NFL teams must reduce their active rosters to 53 players. This is a loaded roster with few holes or opportunities to steal a starting spot or carve out a key role on offense or defense. With the Ravens set to begin preparation for the Commanders, we're releasing another 53-man roster prediction with a few surprises. Random note: The Baltimore Ravens have granted outside linebacker David Ojabo an international roster exemption, opening up a spot for an extra player this offseason. According to "a qualifying international player is a person whose citizenship and principal place of residence are outside the United States and Canada, and who has a maximum of two years of United States high school experience." Ojabo, a 2022 second-round pick out of Michigan by the Ravens, was born in Nigeria but moved to Scotland in 2007. At 17, he moved to the United States and played basketball at Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey. Soon after, he switched to football and became teammates with Baltimore outside linebacker Odafe Oweh. Ojabo now enters a pivotal fourth season in the NFL, and while he will not count against a roster spot for now, he will still count on the 53-man roster once the season starts. QB: 2 Lamar Jackson Cooper Rush Lamar Jackson is an MVP candidate. Cooper Rush looked much better against Dallas and is still among the NFL's most reliable backups. Baltimore could eventually look to bring in a third quarterback. RB: 5 Derrick Henry Justice Hill Keaton Mitchell Rasheen Ali Pat Ricard Baltimore has a solid four at running back, and Rasheen Ali made it difficult for the Ravens to release him, with John Harbaugh all but guaranteeing his roster spot. WR: 6 Zay Flowers DeAndre Hopkins Rashod Bateman LaJohntay Wester Devontez Walker Tylan Wallace The final six spots at wide receiver will look similar, with DeAndre Hopkins replacing Nelson Agholor, and LaJohntay Wester being added via the NFL draft. The Ravens drafted LaJohntay Wester and will look for Devontez Walker to take the next steps. TE: 3 Mark Andrews Isaiah Likely Charlie Kolar Baltimore goes chalk at tight end, bringing back its top three players from 2024, all of whom have expiring contracts. Likely's foot injury could make way for a different scenario if he's placed on injured reserve following the 53-man roster deadline. That would ensure Likely misses the first four games. OL: 9 Tyler Linderbaum Daniel Faalele Andrew Vorhees Roger Rosengarten Ronnie Stanley Joe Noteboom Garrett Dellinger (Drafted Rookie) Corey Bullock Carson Vinson (Drafted Rookie) We have Andrew Vorhees winning the left guard job, and Ben Cleveland as the odd man out of a group that's improved since last season. DL: 5 Justin Madubuike Broderick Washington Aeneas Peebles (Drafted Rookie) John Jenkins Travis Jones With Michael Pierce retired, Travis Jones has an opportunity for a breakout season. Edge Rusher: 5 Mike Green David Ojabo -- International Roster Exemption Odafe Oweh Kyle Van Noy Tavius Robinson Ojabo has had a solid summer regardless of the roster exemption, while Tavius Robinson looks to make a big jump. Adisa Isaac misses out on a roster spot following a dislocated elbow suffered in the win over Dallas. LB: 4 Roquan Smith Trenton Simpson Jay Higgins Teddye Buchanan (Draft Pick) Jake Hummel was signed for his special teams play, but undrafted rookie Jay Higgins IV has made a strong push to make the roster following an All-American career at Iowa. CB: 6 Nate Wiggins Jaire Alexander Chidobe Awuzie T.J. Tampa Marlon Humphrey Jalyn Armour-Davis Jayln Armour-Davis benefits from the Bilhal Kone and Robert Longerbeam injuries, and undrafted rookie cornerback Keyon Martin is making a strong case with one preseason game remaining. Safety: 5 Sanoussi Kane Beau Brade Malaki Starks Kyle Hamilton Reuben Lowery Lowery is a Swiss Army Knife and a player who has impressed head coach John Harbaugh, notably with his diving end zone interception against Dallas. Specialst: 3 Tyler Loop Jordan Stout Nick Moore Harbaugh announced after the Cowboys game that Loop had officially won the job to be the team's next kicker. In two preseason games, Loop has made 6 of 8 field goal attempts, and multiple from over 50 yards out.

Best fantasy football QB value picks for 2025: Target these 4 ADP sleepers
Quarterback has become an increasingly critical position in fantasy football thanks to the rise of mobile quarterbacks. Top dual-threat players like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson can fundamentally change the look of fantasy lineups. As such, fantasy managers have increasingly targeted these players in the early rounds of their drafts. Still, quarterback remains one of the deepest positions in fantasy football, especially in non-SuperFlex leagues. Every year, a top-10 scoring quarterback emerges from the group of streamers selected in the second half of fantasy drafts. Those who choose to wait on quarterbacks will have no shortage of options in the draft's mid-to-late rounds. But who are the best potential value picks to target? Below are a handful of signal-callers who could exceed expectations in 2025. Best QB value picks for fantasy football 2025 Mahomes' ADP has nearly doubled between the 2024 and 2025 NFL seasons, which makes sense since he finished last season as the 12th-ranked fantasy quarterback while ranking 13th in fantasy points per game (FPPG). That said, Mahomes saw plenty of opportunities to generate points. He averaged 36.3 passing attempts per game, good for the second-most behind Joe Burrow (38.4). The two-time MVP should maintain that type of volume in 2025 and could be more efficient with a healthy stable of playmakers at his disposal. Mahomes threw just 26 touchdown passes in 2024, tied for his fewest in a single season as starter. A healthy Rashee Rice, Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy should help him improve upon that figure and could allow him to return to the top-five fantasy quarterback status he has enjoyed in four of his seven seasons as a starter. Prescott disappointed fantasy managers last season by ranking 22nd in FPPG among quarterbacks, but volume wasn't an issue. He averaged 35.8 passing attempts per game, fourth most in the NFL. Instead, the issue was Prescott's scoring capabilities. He averaged just 1.5 total touchdowns per game, well down from his average of 2.2 during the 2023 season, in which he finished as the No. 3 overall fantasy quarterback. Prescott is due for some positive scoring regression, especially with George Pickens – a great contested-catch receiver and potential red-zone weapon – joining the team. That should allow Dak to reestablish himself as a top-10 fantasy quarterback, especially if he shows no ill effects from the hamstring injury that prematurely ended his 2024 season. Many are projecting Purdy to take a step back in 2025 with Deebo Samuel no longer in San Francisco and Brandon Aiyuk likely to miss the start of the season as he recovers from a torn ACL. He could, but the 49ers still have enough weapons to form a formidable offense. Jauan Jennings impressed while leading the 49ers in targets last season; Ricky Pearsall racked up 14 catches, 210 yards and two touchdowns over the final two games of his rookie season; George Kittle is as steady as they come at tight end; and Christian McCaffrey remains one of the NFL's best receiving backs when healthy. All that's to say Purdy shouldn't have any issues consistently generating yardage. After all, he averaged a respectable 257.6 passing yards per game and a solid, under-the-radar 21.5 rushing yards per game last season. Those numbers compare favorably to Bo Nix, who is coming off the board as QB8. The only major difference between Nix and Purdy is that the former had 33 total tocuhdowns last year to Purdy's 25. With some positive TD regression, Purdy could end up matching the Denver Broncos signal-caller and re-establishing himself as a top-10 fantasy quarterback. If you're looking for a consistent, late-round quarterback option, it could be worth investing in Tagovailoa. The 27-year-old ranked 15th in FPPG among quarterbacks last season and averaged 36.27 passing attempts per game, good for third in the league behind only Burrow (38.35) and Mahomes (36.31). The Dolphins sport an explosive passing offense thanks to the presence of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, so Tagovailoa could emerge as a viable fantasy starter – and significantly outperform his QB21 ADP – if he can stay on the field. That has been the veteran's biggest issue, as he has played more than 13 games just once in his five NFL seasons, including just 11 last season. All the NFL news on and off the field. Former Rams QB Bryce Perkins finally gets another shot in NFL after winning UFL MVP
Bryce Perkins was last on an NFL roster in 2022 when he was with the Los Angeles Rams. Since then, he has spent two years in the UFL refining his game, and it finally has earned him another shot in the NFL. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Carolina Panthers are signing the former Rams quarterback and reigning UFL MVP. This is Perkins' first opportunity in the NFL since the 2022 season, when he was with the Rams. In the UFL this past season, Perkins was named league MVP after throwing for 1,342 yards and nine touchdowns in seven games, while also rushing for 269 yards and five touchdowns. A dynamic dual-threat quarterback who played at the University of Virginia, Perkins has always been an electric runner, but he's seemingly improved as a passer during his time in the UFL, too. He posted a league-best 108.7 passer rating in the UFL this season, while also leading the league with an average of 8.5 yards per pass attempt. With the Rams, Perkins started one regular-season game, which came against the Chiefs in 2022. In that loss, he threw for 161 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions; he rushed 19 times for 90 yards, as well.
