The Indian cricket team in Birmingham was advised to stay indoors after a suspicious package was found. Police evacuated buildings and set up a cordon, lifted an hour later.
The Indian cricket team, based in central Birmingham, was advised to stay indoors after a suspicious package was discovered at the nearby Centenary Square.
A BCCI source confirmed to PTI that players were instructed not to venture out following a social media alert from the Birmingham City Centre Police.
Typically, Indian cricketers explore areas close to their hotel, and ahead of the second Test, they were often seen on the bustling Broad Street.
Eight players, including captain Shubman Gill, attended training at Edgbaston, while the remaining ten members had the day off.
'We've currently got a cordon in place around Centenary Square, Birmingham city centre, while we investigate a suspicious package," read a post from Birmingham City Centre Police on X.
'We were alerted just before 3pm, and a number of buildings have been evacuated as a precaution while it's assessed. Please avoid the area," the message read.
However, an hour later, the police lifted the cordon.
Who Plays In 2nd Test?
India captain Shubman Gill remains confident that his team can secure a series-levelling win against England, even if Jasprit Bumrah, the world's top-ranked Test bowler, is not included in the squad for the match at Edgbaston.
India trail 1-0 with four games remaining, following their five-wicket defeat in the first Test at Headingley last week.
The exceptional fast bowler Bumrah claimed 5-83 in the first innings but failed to take a wicket in the second innings as England successfully chased a target of 371.
The 31-year-old Bumrah is recovering from a back injury, and India had previously stated that he was expected to play in just three matches of the series.
The third Test at Lord's is set to begin only four days after the scheduled conclusion of the game in Birmingham.
'Bumrah is definitely available, we just want to see how to manage his workload," Gill told a pre-match press conference at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
'You definitely do miss your best bowler if he's not playing, but I think we knew prior to the series he would only play three Tests… We had plans for who would be playing if he was not playing. We will take that call this (Tuesday) evening."

The Italian, who tested positive twice in March last year for the banned steroid Clostebol, but was cleared of fault or negligence, is playing here for the first time after the news of the positive tests became public. 'I think people have forgotten already a little bit what happened,' said Sinner, who had his fair share of support on Court No. 1 on Tuesday. The Italian explained that the situation in the locker-room had also changed, with a lot of players, who had issues with the way the world No. 1 was treated, have put the situation behind them. Richa Ghosh Creates History, Becomes Fastest Batter In The World To...

Last Updated: Plenty of milestones were reached during India's 24-run win over England in the 2nd T20I held in Bristol on Tuesday. India wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh continues to set new benchmarks. On Tuesday, as Richa top-edged a short delivery from England's Laurn Filer for a boundary in Bristol during the second T20I, she became the quickest batter in the women's T20I to complete 1000 runs in terms of balls faced. The 21-year-old took 702 deliveries to cross the milestone of 100 runs in women's T20I. Overall, she now has 1029 runs from 64 T20Is (53 innings) at a strike-rate of 143.11. Ghosh also holds the record for the joint-fastest half-century in women's T20I history alongside Sophie Devine and Phoebe Litchfield with each having taken 18 deliveries to do so. Among the women's batters with 1000 or more career runs in T20Is, Richa's strike-rate of 143.11 – is the highest. Overall, Richa is the seventh Indian batter to score 1000 or more runs in the format. Meanwhile, India have become the first team to beat England in a women's T20I in Bristol. The hosts had won each of their previous five matches at this venue. This is also the first time that England have lost two matches in a five-match bilateral series. Batting first, India posted a challenging 181/4 in 20 overs after recovering from 31/3. Amanjot Kaur (63*) and Jemimah Rodrigues (63) scored half-centuries for the tourists. Amanjot, who recorded her maiden T20I fifty, followed her superlative effort with the bat by taking 1/28 from three overs as England were kept to 157/7 as India took a 2-0 lead in the series with a 24-run win. India had recorded a big 97-run win in the series opener with stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana hitting a maiden century. It was England's biggest defeat in the format's history (in terms of run-margin). 'It's new Indian team. Wherever we play, home or away, we are ready to dominate. That was our plan and we did that today," Amanjot said after being adjudged player of match. The third match will be held on July 4 at The Oval in London. First Published: July 02, 2025, 10:53 IST

Asia Cup 2025 schedule finalised, India vs Pakistan clash set for 7 September: Report

The wait for Asia Cup could be coming to an end soon as all the participating nations, includin hosts India, are likely to get clearances from their respective governments soon, according to a report in the Times of India. Reportedly, all matches of the upcoming tournament will be played in UAE and the tournament will kick off from 5 September. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and UAE will be the six nations participating in the upcoming tournament which will be played in the group stage and Super Fours format. This would mean that the high octane India vs Pakistan will be played at least two times in the tournament with the second clash set to be played on 14 September. The Asia Cup will be played in T20I format and the penutimate clash will played on 21 September. Reportedly, the promotional activities for the tournament have already begun with official broadcasters Sony recently sharing a poster for the multi-nation tournament. Notably, there were question marks about the tournament especially after the recent escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan in the wake of Operation Sindoor. However, if Asia Cup continues as planned it would send a message for all future international tournaments as well. Earlier this year, there were reports that India may pull out of Asia Cup due to the cross border tensions but BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had refuted those claims in a statement in May. He said, "Since this morning, it has come to our notice about some news items about BCCI's decision not to participate in the Asia Cup and Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup, both ACC events. Such news is devoid of any truth as till now, the BCCI has not even discussed or taken any such steps regarding the ensuing ACC events, leave alone writing anything to the ACC,"
