British tennis player Tara Moore handed 4-year doping ban

LONDON: British tennis player Tara Moore was handed a four-year anti-doping sanction by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Tuesday.
Moore tested positive for the anabolic steroids boldenone and nandrolone following a tournament in Colombia in April 2022.
The 32-year-old was provisionally suspended at the time, but an independent tribunal ruled in December 2023 that Moore bore no fault or negligence.
However, the CAS confirmed on Tuesday that it has upheld the appeal made by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
Moore had made a counter- appeal, arguing that the presence of the banned substances in her system were caused by food eaten while in Colombia.
Moore, the No. 1-ranked doubles player in Britain when she was provisionally banned, will be subject to the four-year ban minus 19 months already served. She will not be eligible to compete again until the start of the 2028 season.
"For the ITIA, every case is considered according to the individual facts and circumstances," ITIA chief executive officer Karen Moorhouse said.
"Our bar for appealing a first instance decision is high, and the decision is not taken lightly.
"In this case, our independent scientific advice was that the player did not adequately explain the high level of nandrolone present in their sample. Today's ruling is consistent with this position. We understand that players and their support teams may have questions about this decision, and we will answer these fully once we have reviewed the details of the ruling."
Moore's suspension follows on the heels of World No. 1 Jannik Sinner serving a three-month anti-doping ban earlier this year.
Former women's world No. 1 Iga Swiatek served a one-month suspension after testing positive for the prohibited substance trimetazidine in August 2024.

Soccer-Nottingham Forest sign winger Ndoye from Bologna

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Coppa Italia - Final - AC Milan v Bologna - Stadio Olimpico, Rome, Italy - May 14, 2025 Bologna's Dan Ndoye celebrates scoring their first goal REUTERS/Matteo Ciambelli/File Photo (Reuters) -Nottingham Forest have signed Swiss winger Dan Ndoye from Serie A side Bologna on a five-year deal, the Premier League club said on Thursday. Financial details of the transfer were not revealed by either club but British media reported Forest paid a fee of around 34 million pounds ($45 million) for the 24-year-old Switzerland international. Ndoye joined Bologna in August 2023 from Swiss side Basel for around 10 million euros ($11 million). He made 41 appearances for Bologna across all competitions last season, scoring nine goals and registering six assists. He scored the winning goal against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia final, helping Bologna secure their first major trophy in 51 years. "It is a really exciting time at Forest and I knew straight away that I wanted to be a part of the project. It's a really ambitious team with a fantastic history and I can't wait to get started," Ndoye said. Ndoye could take the place of former Forest winger Anthony Elanga, who joined Newcastle United earlier this month and also played mainly on the right, like Ndoye. Since making his international debut in 2022, Ndoye has earned 22 caps for Switzerland, starting all five matches at Euro 2024 during their run to the quarter-finals. Forest, who secured a solid seventh-place finish last season, begin their Premier League campaign at home against Brentford on August 17. UK regulator to probe 34 porn sites over age-checks

LONDON: The UK's media watchdog said Thursday it has launched investigations into 34 pornography websites over their compliance with new age-check requirements to prevent children accessing harmful online content. Ofcom said it would probe four firms that run the dozens of sites to assess whether they had 'highly effective' age verification measures in place, after the new rules came into force last week. The long-anticipated Online Safety Act, which took effect on July 25, aims to hinder youngsters from encountering content relating to suicide, self-harm and eating disorders as well as porn. It requires websites and apps hosting potentially harmful pages and posts to implement age checks using measures such as facial imagery or credit cards. Those found to be failing can face fines of up to £18 million ($23 million) or 10 percent of qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever is greater. The new regime has been hailed by campaigners as a milestone in their years-long battle for stronger regulations but criticised by some -- particularly those on the political right -- as an assault on free speech. Its rollout has reportedly prompted a huge spike in downloads of virtual private networks (VPNs) software, which allows browsers to appear as if they are in another country. The most popular free apps on Apple's UK download store since last week have been VPNs, with one, Proton, reporting earlier this week a 1,800 percent rise in downloads, according to British media. In its announcement Thursday, Ofcom said it had prioritised probing the four companies based on the risk of harm posed by the 34 sites they run and their user numbers. Collectively, the websites had over nine million UK visitors per month, according to the regulator. The new cases add to Ofcom's 11 existing investigations into various platforms, including 4chan, an online forum known for 'incel' culture and rampant misinformation. – AFP

Rugby-Australia coach says abused Tizzano's ruck recoil was involuntary

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australia coach Joe Schmidt said Carlo Tizzano's reaction to the contentious clear-out by British & Irish Lions forward Jac Morgan in last week's second test was not voluntary but the result of the amount of force he was subjected to. Morgan's clear-out came at a ruck just before the Lions scored a match-winning try last week in Melbourne and the Welshman's action was cleared by referee Andrea Piardi after reference to the Television Match Official (TMO). Tizzano was pilloried online for recoiling away from the ruck with his hands to his head after the contact, with some former players likening his reaction to a soccer player diving for a penalty. Schmidt, though, said it was simply a matter of physics. "He's had a really tough week, Carlo, he's copped a lot of online abuse," the former schoolteacher told reporters on Thursday. "There were just over 54Gs of direct force that went through the neck, along with almost 2200 (radians) of rotational force, which is enough to cause serious injury. "I think we're all aware of Newton's third law, that for every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction when that force hits him and the speed of his head collapsing down. "He recoiled out the back of the ruck. And I don't think he wanted to recoil like that, but that's the nature of force, that there's an equal and opposite reaction." Schmidt left Tizzano out of his team for Saturday's third test after he turned up sore at training on Tuesday, although he said the 25-year-old had returned to his normal "irrepressible" self by Thursday. The New Zealander made it clear after last week's match that he felt the clear-out was illegal and said it made a mockery of World Rugby's campaign for player safety. That did not go down well with World Rugby chief Alan Gilpin but on Thursday Schmidt said he wanted to put it in the past and look forward to Saturday's dead-rubber third test in Sydney. "We've got a test in 48 hours, and you can lament all sorts of things," he said. "I actually feel like Andrea Piardi had a good game, there's a couple of decisions we might not agree with, but I thought he refereed well. "So we're not looking at refereeing decisions, we're looking at what we could have done better, making sure that we try to repair those things." (Reporting by Nick Mulvenney, editing by Ken Ferris)
