Matildas star drives support network for retired athletes following tragic death of AFL stars Adam and Troy Selwood
A former Matildas star is leading a push for better support for retired athletes after the tragic deaths of Adam and Troy Selwood.
AFL fans were left reeling earlier this year following the deaths of the twin brothers.
Troy Selwood died by suicide in early February. His twin brother Adam, a premiership player for the West Coast Eagles, died just three months later.
The news stunned the sporting community and placed fresh focus on the mental and emotional challenges elite athletes often face once their careers end.
Now, Matildas legend Elise Kellond-Knight has stepped forward to help lead the response.
The retired midfielder, who represented Australia across 17 years and two Olympic Games, is backing a new initiative by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to support athletes adjusting to life after elite competition.
The program, called the Retired Athlete Peer Support Network, offers a safe space for former athletes to connect, reflect, and rebuild.
'It's heartbreaking,' Kellond-Knight said in an interview with Wide World of Sports.
'It's something you just don't fathom is possible, and you would hope that they had every possible piece of support around them before what eventuated.'
The network aims to give retired athletes an opportunity to share experiences with others who understand the emotional toll of stepping away from sport.
Whether it's been a year or a decade since they last competed, the program encourages connection and conversation, something Kellond-Knight believes is sorely needed.
'It shows you how hard it is for athletes to adjust to a new way of life,' she said.
'To basically give up one of their nearest, dearest things to them. It does show you the struggles that we all go through.'
The program was developed following consultation with psychologists, coaches, and athletes, and was strongly pushed by the AIS athlete advisory committee - a group that includes both current and retired stars such as Olympic champion Nina Kennedy, surfing icon Sally Fitzgibbons, and Paralympic legend Kurt Fearnley.
The committee raised concerns with AIS leaders that retirement support was lacking, particularly for athletes grappling with identity loss and disconnection.
'One of the big things every retired athlete I've ever spoken to has referred to is change of identity,' AIS executive general manager of performance Matti Clements said.
'Some will call it a loss of identity, others will say they're stepping into a new phase, but for many, it's, 'I don't know who I am anymore.'
Kellond-Knight, who retired in October last year, admitted that while her identity as an athlete remained strong, the shift in routine and physical activity was difficult to manage.
'I've still got this really healthy relationship with Elise the footballer,' she said.
'I still play in the Victorian Premier League, I'm deputy chair of Professional Footballers Australia, and I commentate on matches. So the identity part isn't hard.'

Australia's Super Netball goes global in deal with Whoopi Goldberg's AWSN
SYDNEY, June 20 (Reuters) - Australia's Super Netball league will be broadcast to more than 65 countries over the next three years after Netball Australia struck a deal with Whoopi Goldberg's All Women's Sports Network (AWSN), the governing body said on Friday. Netball, one of a few sports created exclusively for women and girls, is the most popular participation sport for females in Australia with Netball Australia estimating there are up to a million players across the country. The professional Super Netball league, which was launched in 2017, has eight teams and 41 of its games, including the playoffs and finals, will now be broadcast on AWSN. "This breakthrough deal puts netball on screens across the globe and cements our place at the forefront of women's sport," Netball Australia chief executive Stacey West said in a statement. "AWSN shares our vision of taking women's sport to new heights. Together, we're creating a platform for our athletes and game to shine like never before." Co-founded by Oscar-winning actor and comedian Goldberg, AWSN was launched late last year as the first global media channel dedicated exclusively to showcasing women's sports. "I am so proud to be thanking you for joining us on AWSN," Goldberg said in a video message to Super Netball released by Netball Australia. "I see that your fans are really loving you, so we want to make sure that we put you everywhere in the world so that everybody knows about you."

NRL star Keaon Koloamatangi displays his toughness to line up for Rabbitohs - just DAYS after fracturing eye socket
Wayne Bennett has lauded Keaon Koloamatangi's toughness as he prepares to line up for South Sydney less than a week after fracturing his eye socket. The rapid-fire return gives Koloamatangi two games to reassert his State of Origin credentials, after missing NSW 's trip to Perth for game two with the game-ending injury suffered against Canterbury on Sunday. Koloamatangi had originally been a member of NSW's extended squad for Origin II and appears to be the next cab off the rank if Laurie Daley wants to tweak his 17 for the decider on July 9 in Sydney. The forward comes in from the extended squad to face Melbourne on Saturday and will be joined in the team by star fullback Latrell Mitchell, who is backing up from NSW's two-point loss. The Storm have ruled winger Xavier Coates out of the game at Accor Stadium but are likely to have his Queensland teammates Harry Grant and Trent Loiero on deck after they flew direct to Sydney from Perth after Origin. Fellow Origin representatives Stefano Utoikamanu and Cam Munster flew back to Melbourne and are at longer odds to make the trip to Sydney to face Koloamatangi and the Rabbitohs. '(Koloamatangi) didn't need any surgery and the doctor's quite confident (the injury) won't be a problem to him. He's confident and he's happy so we'll go ahead and let him play,' said South Sydney coach Bennett. 'He's a bit like Jye Gray the other night with a broken thumb, (he) played the whole second half (against the Bulldogs). 'You can't question the toughness and the want to play for the club as well. 'The club's in a good place if players want to play and they've got injuries or getting back a little bit earlier. They work really hard.' The news is not so good for recruit Lewis Dodd, who had been named to come in from reserve grade for the injured Jayden Sullivan but will be replaced at five-eighth by Jack Wighton. The axing raises further questions as to Dodd's future at the Rabbitohs, who have only started him in the halves once since he was lured from England on a salary of more than $600,000. Saturday's game will be the 44th time Bennett has coached against Storm mentor Craig Bellamy, breaking the record for most match-ups for two coaches since the grand final era began in 1954. To keep their top-eight tilt on track, the 14th-placed Rabbitohs must snap Bellamy's impressive 14-game winning streak against Bennett coached sides. '(Bellamy's teams) all do their jobs, they're really good at that. Whatever role you've got in the team, they do it,' he said.

Is British and Irish Lions vs Argentina on TV? Kick-off time, channel and how to watch
The British and Irish Lions begin their 10-match itinerary as preparations intensify for the tour of Australia with a meeting with Argentina in Dublin. The Lions will play on Irish soil for the first time as they take on the Pumas in a lucrative curtain-raiser at the Aviva Stadium that will offer the squad their first chance to press for places. The three Tests against the Wallabies will be the primary focus for Andy Farrell, who will hope to see his side get off to a strong start even if they are still very much in the bedding in process. Argentina are not quite at full strength with a number of injuries and absentees engaged in the Top 14 play-offs, but Felipe Contepomi's men have enjoyed a number of strong seasons and will hope to produce a good showing. Here's everything you need to know. When is the Lions vs Argentina? The opening tour match of the Lions summer is due to kick off at 8pm BST on Friday 20 June at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Welsh language coverage is available via S4C. Team news England's Fin and Marcus Smith are paired in playmaking partnership by Andy Farrell for the first game of the 10-match tour itinerary, with the Lions boss resisting the urge to utilise those involved in the United Rugby Championship and Premiership finals six days ago. An exception is Ronan Kelleher, backing up Luke Cowan-Dickie ahead of club colleague Dan Sheehan with two Leinster hookers in the squad; Tadhg Furlong's availability, meanwhile, is welcome after the tighthead prop missed the Dublin club's run to the URC title. Fresh from a tight defeat in the Premiership final in his last Leicester game, hooker Julian Montoya captains a dangerous Argentina team possessing plenty of experience. Lucio Cinti returns from injury in midfield alongside youngster Justo PIccardo, while scrum half Simon Benitez Cruz and prop Boris Wegner should make debuts off the bench after strong seasons in Super Rugby Americas. Bautista Bernasconi is another potential first-capper. Replacements: 16 Ronan Kelleher, 17 Pierre Schoeman, 18 Tadhg Furlong, 19 Scott Cummings, 20 Henry Pollock; 21 Tomos Williams, 22 Elliot Daly, 23 Mack Hansen.
