Erik ten Hag's Alejandro Garnacho claim speaks volumes in five-way transfer race

Erik ten Hag's Alejandro Garnacho claim speaks volumes in five-way transfer race

Daily Mirrora day ago

Alejandro Garnacho is being chased by five clubs, with an exit from Manchester United close, two years after Erik ten Hag spoke about what he expects from the winger
Alejandro Garnacho is heading towards the exit at Manchester United having failed to live up to the demands set by Erik ten Hag. United have slapped a £70million asking price on Garnacho in the hope he can help fund their summer rebuild, but even if he does leave for a big fee, the winger will do so having fallen short of Ten Hag's expectations.
United will listen to offers for any of their players in the summer transfer window and Mirror Football understands that Ruben Amorim has told Garnacho he doesn't feature in his plans. The decision came after Garnacho reacted furiously to being left on the bench for the Europa League final and was left out of the squad for United's 2-0 win over Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

Thankfully for United, there are interested parties, with Napoli, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen all monitoring his situation. The 20-year-old returned 11 goals and 10 assists in 58 games last season and his value is helped by the fact he is under contract until June 2028.

It is that contract, worth £50,000-a-week and signed in May 2023, which prompted a challenge from Garnacho's former manager, Ten Hag. While congratulating him on his deserved deal, the Dutchman - who is now reportedly among the managers that want to sign him - warned that it would lead to increased expectation.
'First of all, I think he has the prize and it's a prize,' he said. 'He also shows he can make the final step – not only in talent but also, he made it. But now it's a new start, a restart, because now the expectations will be higher, the demands definitely will be higher.
'He is on his way, he is a strong character and that's why he's there in the moment on this level, and he did it by himself. But now is coming more work to go because the demands are higher, we expect more from him. But it's great he made it because it tells we will give young players opportunities, but they have to deserve it.
HAVE YOUR SAY! Are Manchester United right to sell Alejandro Garnacho this summer? Comment below.
'When I say 'give', translate it to 'deserve' and they have to deserve with their feet, they have to show it on the pitch and that means you have to invest a lot and deserve it by training performances, by performance in the under-21s, then wait for your moment and prove it again.
'For Alejandro, he is that step beyond but now the demands will be even more because he has now to compete for a starting XI position. So, every time is the same: you have to cross limits and every time you have to go in the next level. We go with him in that challenge but most important is the player has to do it.'

Man United make Cunha their first major summer transfer

Manchester United have completed the £62.5m transfer of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, marking their first major signing of the summer under Ruben Amorim 's management. Cunha, a boyhood Manchester United fan, has signed a five-year deal with an option to extend until 2031, expressing his delight at joining his favourite English team. The 26-year-old Brazilian forward scored 15 Premier League goals last season, and Manchester United anticipates he will significantly enhance their forward line. Manchester United also made an initial £45m bid for Bryan Mbuemo, which Brentford rejected, and they missed out on Liam Delap, who joined Chelsea. Director of football Jason Wilcox highlighted Cunha's proven Premier League success and dynamic qualities as key reasons for prioritising his signing.

From Le Tissier to Agyemang, five young Lionesses hoping to shine for England at Euro 2025

As England 's Lionesses gear up to defend their crown at Euro 2025, a fascinating blend of seasoned leadership and fresh talent shapes the squad. Sarina Wiegman, who guided England to European glory in 2022, and has since steered the team to the World Cup final in 2023, now faces a recalibrated roster. Since lifting the trophy three years ago, much has changed. Iconic figures and key veterans like Jill Scott, Millie Bright and, more recently, Fran Kirby and Mary Earps have stepped aside, meaning opportunities have opened up for some new emerging stars. England are not only expected to contend, they are expected to lead. But, with the women's game expanding at an unprecedented rate in both competitiveness and visibility, teams like France, Germany and Spain are becoming increasingly harder to beat. Defending their title won't come easy. But, with Weigman's composure and tactical consistency, plus the emergence of breakout debutants, this squad may be more versatile and unpredictable than ever before. Who are the new generation of Lionesses? Grace Clinton A dynamic 22-year-old midfielder who rose through England's U23s before receiving her first senior call-up in October 2023. The youngster began her senior career at Everton and is now a key figure in Manchester United's midfield engine. She has had loan spells at Bristol City, where she won the 2022/23 Championship title, and her season at Tottenham Hotspur in 2023/24 earned her PFA Young player of the Season. Clinton is a versatile player, known for her creativity, vision and ability to exploit space in the attacking third. Scoring just 19 minutes after coming on in her senior international debut (a 7-2 victory over Austria), she made an immediate impression and will surely be an exciting prospect in England's setup. Michelle Agyemang At just 19 years old, Agyemang has exploded onto the senior stage with the confidence and finishing instinct of a seasoned professional. Her England debut was nothing short of spectacular. A stunning volley just 41 seconds after coming on instantly announced her arrival and cemented her place as a rising star. A product of Arsenal's academy, she has developed through loan spells at Watford and Brighton, showcasing her strength, speed and fearless attitude in front of goal. The young forward brings a fresh edge to Wiegman's frontline, and is sure to quickly become one of England's most talked about young stars. Aggie Beever-Jones Chelsea forward Agnes 'Aggie' Beever-Jones has represented England at multiple levels, from Under-15 youth level up to Under-23. The 21-year-old received her first senior call-up in May 2024 as an 89th-minute substitute, and has since had an extraordinary impact with a hat-trick in a 6-0 victory over Portugal, the second England women's player to score a hat-trick at Wembley after Beth Mead. Nicknamed 'the super-sub' by fans, she thrives coming off the bench, but is pushing for starting roles. She has scored four senior goals in just seven appearances for England, including a hat-trick against Portugal. Her sharp finishing and instinct in the box make for a compelling game. And with her 22nd birthday coinciding with the Euro final, she could have a storybook tournament too. Maya Le Tissier The Man Utd captain and 23-year-old defender steps into a central defensive void left by Millie Bright. She became the youngest player to reach 100 WSL appearances in 2024, and earned Young Player of the Year honours at the Women's Football Awards the same year. Le Tissier captained the England Under-17s ahead of the 2019 UEFA Women's U17 Championship qualification. She received her first senior call-up in 2022, and her inclusion in this summer's Euros squad makes her the first player from Guernsey (male or female) to represent England at a major international tournament. She has been praised for her leadership skills and bravery at the back, and will be a natural successor to Chelsea's defensive stalwarts. Jess Park The 23-year-old Manchester City winger and attacking midfielder is a two-time League Cup and one-time FA Cup winner. She is known for her pace, dribbling and technical precision, and has racked up 22 club goals for City. Renowned for her spectacular long-range strikes, Park offers goal-scoring potential from wide areas. With her ability to take on defenders and change games, Park adds a level of depth and tactical flexibility that the England squad may find extremely useful. Park has also come up through the England ranks from youth level, finally making her senior debut in 2022. Whether it's a teenager scoring on debut, or a veteran marshalling the backline, every player in this England squad carries the same dream of defending their title and replicating history. These youngsters have kicked the door wide open to earn their chance on the big stage, and with their addition to the team, these Lionesses may just roar louder than ever before.

Tottenham to name Thomas Frank as head coach after agreeing deal with Brentford

Spurs quickly set their sights on Frank after Ange Postecoglou was sacked last week – only 16 days after he secured Europa League success – and made an official approach to Brentford on Monday. Discussions between Tottenham and Brentford initially centred on Frank's current terms at the west London club, which were set to run until the summer of 2027 and contained a release clause reportedly in the region of £10million. Further talks were required over which backroom staff Frank would take to Spurs but, after days of negotiations, a deal was struck with Brentford on Thursday, PA understands. Highly-rated Brentford first-team coach Justin Cochrane is set to follow Frank to Tottenham and in the process return to the club where he started his coaching journey. London-born Cochrane has been part of Frank's backroom staff since 2022, after he initially developed as a coach in Spurs' youth-team before a spell at Manchester United. Cochrane, 43, has earned a reputation as one of the brightest coaches in England and earlier this year joined Thomas Tuchel's coaching staff for the national team alongside his role at Brentford under Frank. Frank would take over a Spurs side which won a trophy for the first time since 2008 with victory in the Europa League final last month but finished 17th in the Premier League. "One of the best stories in English football" 💬 We sat down with Thomas Frank to get his review of the 2024/25 season as we secured a second top ten finish in three years ⤵️ — Brentford FC (@BrentfordFC) May 30, 2025 The ex-Brondby boss has transformed Brentford during his seven-year spell in charge, with promotion from the Championship in 2021 followed by him establishing the club as a Premier League regular despite a modest budget. Christian Eriksen, who played under Frank at Brentford and starred during a seven-year spell at Spurs, backed his compatriot to be a success at his former club. 'I think he is the right coach for Tottenham,' Eriksen told Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet. 'I have had Thomas at various times and I think he is the perfect match for Tottenham, and it would be great if Thomas takes on that challenge. 'His personality, his way of playing and his way of being. And the club considering where they were last season – they won a trophy of course – but they are in the process of building something up, and I am sure that Thomas is a good man to bring in.'
