Good governance vital for Muslim trust in zakat institutions
IPOH: Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak emphasised that Islam strictly prohibits any misuse of power or breach of trust by those responsible for collecting and distributing zakat. His Royal Highness stressed that Muslim confidence in zakat institutions, including the Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPk), must be strengthened through good governance, transparency, and accountability.
Speaking at the launch of Zakat Perak Al Ridzuan, Sultan Nazrin cited a historical incident involving the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Al-Lutabiyyah, who received a gift while collecting zakat. The Prophet questioned whether the gift would have been given had Al-Lutabiyyah not been in his position, advising its return to avoid corruption.
'Abu Humaid Ibn Sa'ad As-Saidi narrated an incident involving the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Al-Lutabiyyah, who received a gift while performing his duty of collecting zakat,' Sultan Nazrin said. 'Rasulullah (PBUH) regarded such gifts as dubious, fearing they might contain elements of corruption, and advised Al-Lutabiyyah to return it to its giver.'
The Sultan urged MAIPk and Zakat Centre employees to adopt a work culture rooted in trustworthiness and integrity. He also commended the State Secretary's Office and State Finance Office for implementing a zakat payment scheme through salary deductions.
Sultan Nazrin noted that MAIPk is the only institution in Perak where all staff, from leadership to junior workers, contribute to zakat via salary deductions. He highlighted zakat's role in social justice, reducing wealth disparity, and uplifting the less fortunate.
The event was attended by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and MAIPk president Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini.

The heated exchange between the two continued before being stopped by Syahredzan Johan, who was presiding over the session. Awang later resumed his debate and took a jab at Rayer, saying that Pas had remained calm even when the party was previously labelled "Parti Ajaran Sesat." "They even called Pas 'Parti Ajaran Sesat,' but we stayed calm. One of them is a kafir harbi who called us that. He said it just now in Parliament. But we stayed calm," he said. Tensions escalated further after Chong Zemin (PH-Kampar) interjected in defence of Rayer before being muted by Syahredzan. Pakistan launches a new security operation against militants near Afghan border

There was no formal announcement of the launch of the offensive in Bajaur, a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, but a government administrator, Saeed Ullah, said it was not a large-scale operation and only insurgent hideouts were being hit to avoid civilian casualties. Another government administrator, Shahhid Ali, said the number of displaced people had rapidly increased to nearly 100,000. On Tuesday, the provincial government in the northwest said it will give 50,000 rupees (US$175) in compensation to each displaced family in Bajaur, where volunteers from the Al-Khidmat Foundation, a charity, were also seen distributing food among displaced families. Among those displaced is Gul Wali, 50, who said it was the second time that he had been forced to flee his home, as he sat in a government shelter, "although we have been told we will return to our village soon.' Wali said most homes in his village in the Mamund district were destroyed during the previous military offensive in 2009. "We do not know what will happen to our homes this time,' he said. Residents reported that security forces, backed by helicopters, struck militant hideouts in the mountainous areas along the Afghan border. Many TTP leaders and fighters have found sanctuary in Afghanistan and have been living there openly since the Taliban takeover, and some have crossed the border back into Bajaur and carried out attacks.
