NEW DELHI:
Defence Research and Development Organisation
(DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Friday successfully conducted trials of the Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air missile (BVRAAM) 'ASTRA' with an indigenous RF seeker against high-speed unmanned aerial targets at different ranges.
Conducted off the coast of Chandipur in Odisha, the test validated the Astra missile's advanced precision and lethality. The missile scored a direct hit on a flying target, with all onboard subsystems performing flawlessly and meeting the mission's technical objectives.
"DRDO and @IAF_MCC conducted successful trials of Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air missile (BVRAAM) 'ASTRA' with indigenous RF seeker against high-speed unmanned aerial targets at different ranges, target aspects and launch platform conditions from Su-30 Mk-I platform off the coast of Odisha," DRDO posted on X.
ASTRA is designed to take out aerial targets at distances exceeding 100 kilometres. Its cutting-edge guidance and navigation systems give it the ability to strike with high accuracy. The missile has already been inducted into service with the Indian Air Force (IAF), bolstering the nation's air defence framework.
The success of this trial is seen as a key milestone toward the operational deployment of the LCA AF MK1A variant, which is a more advanced version of the indigenous fighter jet.
It reflects the increasing maturity of India's homegrown defence production ecosystem.
Behind the achievement is the coordinated effort of multiple organisations: the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), DRDO, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC), Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DG-AQA), Indian Air Force, and the test range team.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the teams involved in the successful mission, praising the synergy among the various stakeholders. Dr Samir V Kamat, chairman of DRDO and Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development, also commended the collaborative spirit of scientists, engineers, and technicians who contributed to the milestone test.
This successful firing of Astra from the LCA platform not only demonstrates the missile's capabilities but also reinforces India's growing technological edge in aerial warfare systems.

An empowered committee led by Defence Secretary RK Singh recommended the induction of fifth-generation fighter jets to enhance the force's deterrence and preparedness, especially along the northern and western borders. Live Events The Indian side is showing interest in acquiring the fifth-generation fighter aircraft, when reports suggest that China is already working on sixth-generation fighter jets and may also provide its fifth-generation fighters to the Pakistan Air Force in the next few years. The two countries from which India could potentially procure fifth-generation aircraft were the United States and Russia. However, the government has not taken any decision on the issue of fifth-generation fighter jets, but discussions are going on in this regard. The US has offered the F-35 fighter jet, while Russia has proposed its Su-57 jets for India's consideration. India had opted out of the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGfA) project many years ago, but there is an option to rejoin it. The F-35 has been sold to various countries by the US in Europe and outside. India is also looking at a programme to build 114 modern 4.5 plus generation fighters in partnership with a foreign country under Make in India , and may go for a government-to-government deal after a tender. The Indian Air Force is looking to use these planes to prepare a strong deterrence all along the western and northern fronts.

AI-powered policing takes off as Kalaburagi gets smart drones for a first in the State

As part of its commitment to strengthening law enforcement and equipping youth with future-ready skills, the State government has launched a drone-based public safety infrastructure for Kalaburagi. The initiative marks the beginning of a technology-driven policing model and lays the foundation for a skilled drone task force across the State. At a formal event in Bengaluru on Thursday, Home Minister G. Parameshwara handed over two advanced surveillance drones, Nimble-I and NS01, to Kalaburagi Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa. These AI-powered drones, designed and manufactured in the State, are being deployed with support from the private sector under CSR initiatives. 'Our vision is to equip every police station in the State with drones. These drones will enhance the agility and responsiveness of our forces. Their indigenous design reflects how local innovation can serve public interest,' Dr. Parameshwara said. The drones feature advanced surveillance capabilities such as day-and-night monitoring, automatic number plate recognition, crowd and vehicle tracking and rapid field deployment enabling tech-supported policing across districts, the Home Minister said. Drone training Joining the event, Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, IT & BT and Kalaburagi district in-charge Priyank Kharge announced that 500 youth in Kalaburagi will be trained in DGCA-certified drone operations. The training will open up career opportunities in agriculture, logistics, disaster management and infrastructure monitoring. 'Our technological strength should become a catalyst for rural transformation and throw open opportunities. Drones are among the fastest-growing sectors globally. By training our youth in cutting-edge drone technology, we are preparing them for future jobs while fostering local innovation and tech-driven ecosystems,' Mr. Kharge said. With projections suggesting over one lakh jobs in the Indian drone industry by 2026, the State aims to position itself not only as a user but also as a national hub for drone innovation and talent, he added. 'The State's leadership in aerospace, electronics and research and development provides a strong foundation for expanding skill development initiatives across districts. This initiative reflects our government's commitment to tech-enabled rural empowerment and makes Kalaburagi a model district where innovation, public service and youth empowerment converge to create a meaningful impact,' Mr. Kharge said. The State continues to lead in adopting advanced technologies, building resilient infrastructure and creating job opportunities through inclusive and smart governance, he said.

Google's new AI shopping features let you try on clothes and track better deals

Google is rolling out a suite of AI-powered shopping features designed to make online shopping more personal and budget-friendly. The three new features coming to Google Shopping are: a virtual try-on tool, enhanced price tracking, and an upcoming visual inspiration feature that could possibly change how people shop online. See yourself in that dress before you buy it One feature that users have been eagerly awaiting is virtual try-on. First announced at I/O back in May, Google's 'Try it on' tool was initially available as an experimental feature through Search Labs. Now, it's rolling out to all users across Search, Google Shopping, and Google Images in the US. How does it work? Just tap the "Try it on" icon on any clothing item, upload a full-length photo, and AI will show you how those gingham pants or that summer dress might look on your actual body. You can even save your favorite looks and share them with friends. Price alerts get smarter about what you actually want Google's also upgraded its price alerts to be way smarter about your shopping habits. Now when you hit "track price" on a product, you can specify exactly what size, color, and maximum price you're willing to pay. The system taps into Google's massive Shopping Graph to monitor deals across the entire web, sending you alerts only when something matches your exact criteria. No more endless checking or forgetting about that bag you've been eyeing. AI-generated style inspiration coming this fall The most ambitious feature is AI-generated outfit and room design inspiration that launches this fall. Users will be able to describe what they're looking for, like "a green flowy dress for a garden party," and Google's AI will generate visual examples, then match them to real products you can actually buy.
