'Wildlife haven' nature reserve known for bluebells closes to visitors ahead of sale
A 'wildlife haven' nature reserve has closed to visitors as it is set to be sold off. Longspring Wood, in Toms Lane, Kings Langley, is described as a 'a wildlife haven... an oasis nestled behind houses' with a mass of bluebells as well as oak, ash, and hazel trees. The one-hectare site is managed by the Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust, but the charity has confirmed its sale is underway. A message on the trust's website says: 'As part of our ongoing efforts to maximise the impact of our conservation work, we have undertaken a thorough review of our nature reserves and how we can best allocate our limited resources. 'After careful consideration, the trust has made the decision to step away from managing Longspring Wood. 'The site is now under offer so we have closed our path while the sale is completed.' Access to the wood is closed. In total, the trust is stepping back from seven nature reserves across its area. Proceeds from the sale will be reinvested in its long-term strategy as it is running 'significant budget deficits' amid increasing costs. Each site will remain designated 'local wildlife sites', affording them special legal protection in the planning system. The trust added: 'Where the trust is exploring the sale of sites, we do so being explicit that we want to see the land maintained for its contribution to nature and will implement safeguards through the sale process to ensure as best as we are able that this is upheld.' 'Overwhelming' donations help save flower bench
A volunteer group has been "overwhelmed" by donations to help save its flower bench after it was damaged by a falling tree branch. The "well-used" bench next to a bus stop in Washington Village, near Sunderland, was "obliterated" last week when a heavy section of a storm-damaged tree crashed on to it. It had been built five years ago and is maintained by the Washington Village in Bloom group. Volunteer Anne James, 58, set up a fundraiser which more than doubled its £300 repair target in three days. She said: "It's very gratifying that we have got that many people willing to support us, and appreciate what we do because we're out in all weathers and all year round." Mrs James, who said she is not particularly tech-savvy, said: "I was a little bit overwhelmed because I've never done anything fundraising before." She created the appeal because, after she posted a picture of the damage, people on social media were asking how they could help. The fundraiser "snowballed" and reached £650 before she closed it. The bench, which also featured a bug house hotel, was constructed by Alan Kerry from the group. It is thought the tree that fell on it had been weakened by previous storms. "It pretty much obliterated the seat," Mrs James said. "The council came out the next morning and cleared the tree but obviously what was left of the seat was sticks really." Mr Kerry had since been able to repair the seat, re-using the damaged wood. It cost about £100 in paint, bolts and filler, so the rest of the money will be used on more flowers for the village plus tools and uniforms, Mrs James said. The group won the Royal Horticultural Society's Britain in Bloom best village gold award in October. Mrs James said people had been "so generous" to donate. "It's a very leafy village so there's always leaves to pick up and bulbs to plant. "It's nice to know that people do actually appreciate what we're doing." Rare sighting of white-tailed eagle
A rare sighting of one of the largest birds of prey in the UK far from their usual breeding ground has delighted nature lovers. The white-tailed eagle was spotted by bird watchers at Stainmore, on the border between Cumbria and County Durham. It has been identified as G818, a female eagle originally released on the Isle of Wight in 2021, by volunteers from the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation. Tim Mackrill, an ornithologist for the foundation, said a number of eagles pass through Cumbria each year but sightings are "rare". G818 has spent the summer in the Scottish Highlands and is now making her way down to the south coast. "She began heading south on 2 August and then spent 3-9 August near Stanmore," Mr Mackrill said. "We are hopeful she will find a mate and settle somewhere on the south coast over the course of the coming autumn and winter. "There are currently three established pairs of white-tailed eagles on the south coast as a result of the reintroduction, with two of the pairs breeding successfully this summer."
