Golden Earring co-founder George Kooymans dies at 77

NEW YORK (AP) — George Kooymans, the guitarist and co-founder of the Dutch band Golden Earring who co-wrote the hard-rock classic 'Radar Love' and wrote and shared lead vocals on the top 10 hit 'Twilight Zone,' has died at age 77.
Kooymans' family and the surviving members of Golden Earring announced that he had died Wednesday from complications of ALS, which he had been diagnosed with in 2020. He retired from the band soon after.
'George bore this devastating and debilitating illness with exceptional strength and dignity,' the statement from Golden Earring reads in part. 'We bid farewell to a great musician and composer, whose work extended beyond Golden Earring. George was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, but above all, a friend.'
A native of The Hague, Kooymans was in his mid-teens when he helped found what became Golden Earring in the early 1960s: The band's name was inspired by an instrumental of the time, 'Golden Earrings.' He was also a core member of the group's best known lineup, which featured drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk, singer-guitarist Barry Hay and bassist-keyboardist Rinus Gerritsen and stayed together from 1970 until Koosyman's departure.
With more than 20 top 10 singles in their native country, Golden Earring had more success at home than overseas. But they began to attract an underground following in the U.S. in the late 1960s and broke through commercially in 1973 with the worldwide hit 'Radar Love,' which has been covered by U2, R.E.M. and hundreds of others and used on the soundtrack to 'Baby Driver,' 'Wayne's World 2' and other films.
'Radar Love,' with its stately opening riff and memorable opening line 'I've been driving all night, my hands wet on the wheel,' was once ranked by Rolling Stone as among the greatest road trip songs.
Golden Earring shared bills with Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin among others and toured with such stars as Aerosmith, Rush and the Doobie Brothers. In 1982, 'Twilight Zone' became their biggest U.S. song with the help of a video on the recently launched MTV, while other popular tracks included 'When the Lady Smiles' and 'Going to the Run.'
Golden Earring continued to tour and record in the 1990s and beyond. For its 50th anniversary, in 2011, the band was honored with a commemorative stamp from the Dutch postal service that through an app could be linked to 'Radar Love.' A farewell performance, without Kooymans, had already been scheduled for early next year.

Ariana Grande Blocked From A New No. 1 Hit

Ariana Grande's latest single 'Twilight Zone' debuts on multiple charts in the United Kingdom this week, long after it gave the pop singer yet another win on several tallies. The tune was recently released on vinyl, and fans of the Grammy winner snapped up copies in large enough numbers that the cut almost became another chart-topper – though it doesn't quite manage to hit No. 1. 'Twilight Zone' Debuts High 'Twilight Zone' debuts on both the Official Physical Singles and Official Vinyl Singles charts this week. On the physical tally, Grande misses the summit by a single rung, while on vinyl she lands firmly inside the top three. Wunderhorse Blocks Grande From the Top Grande's bid for another physical No. 1 is halted by English rock band Wunderhorse. The outfit leaps from No. 67 to No. 1 with 'The Rope' in just its second week on the chart. The rock cut's rapid ascent forces 'Twilight Zone' to settle for the runner-up slot, despite very healthy sales. Ariana Grande Expands Her Top 10 Smashes With 'Twilight Zone,' Grande claims her thirteenth top 10 on the Official Physical Singles chart. On the vinyl ranking, she earns her eleventh career top 10. Her history on both rosters includes two leaders apiece, as 'Yes, And?' and 'We Can't Be Friends (Wait for your Love)' from her Eternal Sunshine era both managed to peak in first place. Joining a List of No. 2 Hits 'Twilight Zone' is the latest Grande single to peak at No. 2 on the Official Physical Singles chart, and one of several from her catalog. It follows tunes like 'Positions,' 'The Boy Is Mine' and 'Popular' from the Wicked soundtrack, all of which also fell just short of the crown. 'Twilight Zone' Reaches a New Sales High The single also returns to the Official Singles Sales chart, landing at No. 5 this week. That's a new best showing for the poppy cut. As it surges, the tune marks Grande's twenty-second top 10 on the sales-focused list.

Drake Wants Your Help: The Rapper Is Looking for a Fan He Brought on Stage in Amsterdam

Drake is continuing his trek through Europe, and on night two in Amsterdam Thursday (July 31), he brought a fan to the stage named Julia during 'Yebba's Heartbreak,' who left an impression on the 6 God. Now, Drizzy is looking for some help from his fans to reconnect with his 'new friend' Julia. 'Need to find her man she's a special spirit I lost her in the crowd after,' he wrote in the comments of a @DrakeDirect Instagram video. 'Make some noise for her one time,' Drake said after the hug. 'She needed a hug. This is Julia, everybody. This is my new friend right here. Make some noise for Julia. That's what you gotta do sometimes. You gotta show love.' Seconds later, Drake picked up a Canadian flag from a fan in the front row to show the rest of the crowd. 'You trying to make me feel like I'm at home, huh?' he said while proudly waving the red and white. It appears he wants to see her back at the third Amsterdam show on Saturday night (Aug. 2). 'Julia we need you back at the next show you are the best vibe find us cause we can't find you,' he wrote in a caption of a deleted Instagram Story, according to Complex. Drake has made headlines with his earlier Amsterdam concerts, which found him giving a speech about how his 'karma is straight' and why he's been able to maintain longevity in the rap game for nearly two decades. He also revealed to the crowd that his 7-year-old son, Adonis, was conceived in the Netherlands' capital. On the music side, Drake kicked off the Iceman album rollout with 'What Did I Miss?,' which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, while he joined forces with Central Cee for 'Which One' last week. Valve founder Gabe Newell just purchased a superyacht company

Valve founder Gabe Newell is setting out on a new adventure — and it doesn't involve Half-Life 3. Instead, Newell is acquiring Oceanco, the yacht-building company that's creating his $400 million super ship, as reported earlier by Boat International. In a post about the change, Oceanco says Newell's interest in the brand comes from a 'lifelong fascination with the sea' and 'a deep respect for the people who live and work on it.' Oceanco is based in the Netherlands, and it has changed leadership a few times since its founding in 1987, with private investor Mohammed Al Barwani helming the company for the past 15 years before Newell came along. Along with Newell's 364-foot-long superyacht, Oceanco developed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' $500 million sailing yacht, Koru, which stretches 417 feet long. It's also behind the Kaos sailing superyacht owned by Walmart heir Nancy Walton Laurie, as well as the Bravo Eugenia, owned by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Newell has a growing fleet of yachts as well, including the Oceanco-built Draak (formerly called the Tranquility) and the Rocinante superyacht, built by German yacht-maker Lürssen. As for what Newell plans to do now that he's the head of a big superyacht builder, Oceanco puts it pretty simply: 'His first decision? Leave the team alone. Seriously. Oceanco has vision and integrity, and a culture that actually works. Gabe doesn't want to fix it, he wants to fuel it.'
