‘Heart Eyes' Review: A Been-There-Slashed-That Rom-Com Horror Flick
If movie musicals had their heyday in the 1930s and '40s, the equivalent for slasher movies was the 1980s. Like the Scream franchise, which it closely resembles, Heart Eyes both pays homage to and parodies its inspirations, which, considering that it's set on Valentine's Day, must include My Bloody Valentine (the 1981 original, of course, not the remake).

The story revolves around an annual murder spree conducted on the holiday in different cities by a killer wearing a mask featuring, you guessed it, heart-shaped eyes. Not only do they send the right anti-social message, they also have a utilitarian value, capable of night vision while glowing red in the dark. The 'Heart Eyes Killer,' or 'HEK' as the media has dubbed him, only attacks romantic couples, suggesting that things have gone badly for him in the dating department. So pretty much everyone should be considered a suspect.
The central characters in the film, Ally (an appealing Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding), aren't a romantic couple. At least yet. They're thrown together when forced by their tyrannical boss (Michaela Watkins, doing a send-up of Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada) to collaborate on an ad campaign. After dinner, Ally makes the mistake of passionately kissing Jay after she spots her ex with his new girlfriend. It makes them Heart Eyes' new target.
The killer proves pretty resourceful, even managing to show up inside Ally's closet just a few minutes later. In the ensuing battle that spills outside, Ally flees, and when the police arrive, Jay is arrested as a suspect. The detectives investigating the murders, played by Devon Sawa and Jordana Brewster, are named Hobbs and Shaw, which is an example of the general level of wit in the screenplay penned by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy, whose collective credits include such horror films as Freaky, It's a Wonderful Knife, and Happy Death Day and its sequel.
The creatives' obvious affinity for the genre comes through in every frame of the film, and to their credit Heart Eyes includes many clever touches, such as the would-be victims declaring 'We're not together!' in a vain effort to dissuade the romance-obsessed killer. And there's no shortage of inventive carnage on display, enough to satisfy even the most bloodthirsty gore hounds, presented with the sort of practical effects they relish.
But despite the slavish genre trappings, or rather because of them, Heart Eyes feels too familiar to prove very interesting, unless you think that a potential victim throwing up on the killer is a novel twist. It's no spoiler to reveal that the killer seems to have been definitively dispatched at one point, since it takes place with 30 minutes to go and everyone knows that he'll soon reappear in one way or another. The method that the screenwriters have devised, in which his identity is revealed, proves both overplotted and underwhelming, although it does provide the opportunity for one of the cast members to vigorously chew the scenery.

It's safe to say 'KPop Demon Hunters' is a Netflix sensation by this point, right? Not only is it the streaming service's most-watched animated original ever, it's overtaken movies like "The Adam Project" and "Bird Box" to become Netflix's fourth most-watched English-language movie of all time. Nearly two months on from the hit animated musical film's release, it is still the platform's No. 1 watch — 'Kandahar' stole that spot briefly, but Huntrix has already reclaimed the top spot — and "KPop Demon Hunters" songs and scenes continue to generate tons of buzz all over social media. It wasn't just a hit with fans, either; critics love it, too. The movie's currently sitting at an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and has (rightly) won praise for its characters, its vibrant visuals and that killer soundtrack. Seeing as it is most definitely Netflix's next big thing, it only makes sense that fans are desperate to know whether 'KPop Demon Hunters 2' is something we can look forward to streaming in the future. At the time of writing, we do not have a firm answer from Netflix, so I've done my best to try and answer that question as best I can. Here's everything we know about the future of 'KPop Demon Hunters' right now. At the end of July, TheWrap reported that Netflix was (understandably) looking to capitalize big time on the 'KPop Demon Hunters' craze as much as possible. The movie was apparently being viewed as Netflix's version of 'Frozen," and the report claimed there were plans for two animated sequels, a live-action remake and/or maybe even a stage musical. However, we still haven't had an official announcement from Netflix, and thus still do not know whether 'KPop Demon Hunters' will return, or how big that theoretical return could be. The latest news on the matter comes from a recent interview The Hollywood Reporter published with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and Netflix film boss, Dan Lin. 'I think it's going to be part of our lives for a bit. I don't see the fandom slowing down,' Kang said. 'We hit an all-time high in viewership in week five, which is absolutely insane.' It's Dan Lin who makes it sound like we've not seen the last of Rumi, Zoey and Mira. Lin adds that Netflix is 'excited to explore what could be the next adventure for Huntrix.' ''KPDH's' success comes from its original, fresh story so if we do embark on a sequel, we would want to take our time to make sure that any future stories we tell with our favorite demon hunters retains the flair and uniqueness of the first film', Lin adds. That's a promising stance for a potential 'KPop Demon Hunters' sequel, seeing as both directors have already expressed interest in revisiting or expanding that world. When asked by ScreenRant whether they were thinking of follow-up ideas, Kang had this to say: 'Always. There are always side stories, and there are things we've thought of while making this one. There are a lot of questions that are answered, but not fully. I think there are a lot of pockets that we can explore.' Similarly, Appelhans told Shine On Media: 'Because we had to pack so much into 85 minutes — it's a pretty big idea and a lot of pieces — there are so many unanswered questions, in a good way, and so many avenues that could be their own story, so many possibilities.' So, in essence, if all the major players can agree on the right story, or the right new way to explore this universe, then it sure seems likely that 'KPop Demon Hunters 2' is in the pipeline. And seeing as the hype shows no signs of dying down just yet, I'd be shocked if the movie's future wasn't confirmed soon. In the meantime, we'll just have to be content with streaming 'KPop Demon Hunters' on Netflix on repeat. 'I always thought the track had soul,' Iggy, 78, told The Hollywood Reporter in a story published on Tuesday, July 15. 'Superman is the best friend you could have.' Iggy's version of Teddybears' song 'Punkrocker' played during the emotional final scene of Superman, and rolled into the ending credits. Teddybears first released the tune in 2000, and Iggy hopped on the track six years later, after other artists covered the song. The hit was reborn after Superman was released on July 11, after Luminate reported that 'Punkrocker' had 1,572 streams on July 4, and 190,500 after the DC Comics film debuted Meanwhile, many YouTubers swarmed the comments section of the official 'Punkrocker' Instagram video with heartwarming reactions to the message the song depicted alongside the film. 'Just leaving the theater with tears in my eyes. James Gunn truly understands what Superman is about and what he stands for. I haven't had this feeling seeing Superman on the big screen since Reeve,' one person wrote. 'This is what comic book movies are supposed to be. No one does em better. The future of DC is bright.' A second fan added, 'The idea of making kindness and hope punk was such a clever and brilliant move. Being kind is punk rock!' Iggy's version of 'Punkrocker' strays away from the original Teddybears lyrics. The lyrics of the original version reads, 'You see me driving down the street / I'm just not looking good.' Eagles superfan and musician vows to boycott shows in a rival city
One of county music's top stars turns his tour decisions into a loyalty statement. It isn't one of the game's traditional rivalries. The involved teams honestly haven't played each other enough to develop any genuine hatred. Last February's Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs matchup was only the twelfth time these proud organizations met on the field to play a football game. There is something brewing, though, and it isn't always friendly. No one should be shocked. Many rivalries have been born from two teams crossing one another's paths frequently during the postseason. Pro football consists of 32 teams. There are only 17 games played by every team each regular season. Every team plays its divisional rivals twice. No team plays every franchise. Thus, league officials developed a rotating schedule, so each organization will eventually play every other team. Long story short, Philadelphia and Kansas City are only scheduled to meet once every four years unless these two teams meet in a Super Bowl or finish with identical rankings in the conference standings (or both). As fate would have it, they've met in football's biggest game to conclude two of the past three seasons. We have seen how that has turned out. They've both come out on top once, and now, there's a little tension. Hey, don't blame the players and coaches. Blame two passionate fan bases. Eagles fan Zach Bryan won't be playing in Kansas City anytime soon. The Eagles and Chiefs share an iconic coach. Kansas City's players and fans weren't very respectful after winning Super Bowl LVII. Who can forget about JuJu Smith-Schuster sending James Bradberry a Valentine's Day card referencing 'holding'? Then, there was the Chiefs' victory parade. Kansas City's offensive linemen showed up with T-shirts referencing Philadelphia registering zero sacks, which in turn led to Lane Johnson mentioning that in his speech to his Eagles teammates before the big game this past February. Why do you think this team took so much pleasure in bludgeoning Patrick Mahomes? Now, one of the Birds' biggest fans has joined in. Country music star Zach Bryan took to X recently and asked, "Where are all the three-peat people from last year?' A Chiefs fan responded with some profanity. Bryan didn't back down, offering a jab of his own. 'Please understand I will never play in Kansas City.' See? Eagles vs. Chiefs may not be a natural rivalry, but it's a rivalry nonetheless. What can we say? Birds fans are different. Sometimes, passion drifts towards lunacy. No one likes them. They don't care. The bonds of loyalty are never broken. We enter 'Exhibit A' into evidence. Bryan's declaration is one every Eagles fan can respect and back with everything in them. Good for you, Mr. Bryan! Good for you!
