Man who lit cigarette from French war memorial flame faces legal action
The video of a man stooping to light a cigarette from the fire at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, before walking calmly away watched by tourists, caused indignation when it was widely shared on social media.
'I am filing a case immediately with the Paris state prosecutors so that this man will be found and sanctions imposed to make an example of him,' Patricia Miralles, the minister for veterans and remembrance, wrote on X.
'You cannot ridicule French remembrance and get away with it.'
The tomb, under the arch at the top of the Champs-Élysées avenue, contains the remains of a soldier killed in the first world war and is laid there as a tribute to France's war dead.
'This flame does not light a cigarette, it burns for the sacrifice of millions of our soldiers,' said Miralles.
'This is an insult to our dead, to our history and to our nation.'
AFP was not able to determine the origin of the video.
Le Figaro newspaper reported that it was filmed by a Latvian tourist on the evening of 4 August and first posted on TikTok.

According to the publication, Charlotte has hired Coleen Rooney's Wagatha Christie lawyer Paul Lunt to be on standby for potential legal threats. A spokesman for Conor Maynard told The Sun: 'It's baffling. Conor's already agreed to another paternity test, so there's no need to drag this through the courts. Villarreal sign former Arsenal midfielder Partey
Aug 7 (Reuters) - Villarreal have signed Ghana international Thomas Partey on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract with Arsenal, the LaLiga club said on Thursday. The 32-year-old defensive midfielder has agreed a season-long deal and will join the Villarreal squad in training on Friday. Partey was charged last month with raping two women while he was a player for the Premier League club. He is accused of five counts of rape relating to two women, plus a charge of sexual assault against a third woman, between April 2021 and June 2022. "The club is aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceedings in England. The player vehemently defends his innocence and denies all charges against him," Villarreal said in a statement. "The club respects his presumption of innocence as a fundamental principle and is awaiting the verdict of the courts, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts of the case. In accordance with British law regarding ongoing proceedings, the club will not comment further on this matter." Partey made 167 appearances for Arsenal, scoring nine goals after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020. Villarreal, who beat Arsenal 3-2 in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, begin their LaLiga campaign at home to promoted Real Oviedo on August 16.
