Sand artist creates sculpture to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
Puri (Odisha) [India], June 26 (ANI): Renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik on Thursday created a powerful sand sculpture on Puri beach in Odisha to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Below the sculpture, 'Say NO to addiction, YES to life' was written. Through his art, Pattnaik aimed to highlight the devastating effects of drugs on individuals.
Pattnaik's informed that the state is running a campaign called 'Nisha Nuhin Jeevan' (Life Without Addiction), which aims to educate people about the risks associated with substance abuse.
Speaking to ANI, Pattnaik said, 'We artists try to spread awareness among people through our art by creating sand sculptures. Apart from this, our state is running a 'Nisha Nuhin Jeevan' campaign. As an artist, I showed through my art how drugs and injections affect our bodies, and we can avoid it by not taking drugs and saving lives...'
As the world celebrates the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking today, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, also reminded the harms of drug consumption and said that drug addiction not only affects the mental and physical condition of a person, but also hinders the progress of the families, society and the state.
The Chief Minister shared his commitment to making Uttarakhand drug-free and further added that efforts are being made to make Uttarakhand drug-free, and to ensure success, the participation of all is very important. On the occasion of International Anti-Drug Day, he urged all to spread awareness in society about the harmful effects of drug addiction.
June 26, observed as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is a United Nations International Day. This day aims to spread awareness regarding the harmful effects of drug use and to fight against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. This day has been observed since 1989. June 26 was chosen to commemorate Lin Zexu's (Chinese political philosopher and politician) dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, ending on June 25, 1839, just before the First Opium War in China.
Every year, a theme is chosen, and this year's theme is 'The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention.' (ANI)

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has vowed to take stringent action against drug peddlers, consumers, and all those involved in the illegal drug trade, asserting that the government is committed to eliminating the menace of narcotics. Speaking at the walkathon organised by the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) in Guntur on Thursday to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Mr. Naidu said drug addiction 'is not just a law and order problem but a societal threat' that needed to be rooted out. Addressing a large gathering of students, parents, and the general public, Mr. Naidu urged people to say 'no' to drugs. 'We are committed to ensuring 100% law and order. Drones and CCTV surveillance are being used effectively to prevent crime,' he said. WhatsApp number On the occasion, he launched a dedicated WhatsApp number '897781972' and a toll-free helpline '1972' brought by EAGLE. Criticising the previous YSRCP government, Mr. Naidu said during its tenure, the State had witnessed a surge in ganja cultivation, especially in the Visakhapatnam Agency, which was turned into a hub for drug production. He accused former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy of failing to act against drug culture. 'Mr. Jagan had visited a ganja batch in Tenali. Politicians should be role models,' Mr. Naidu said. Expressing concern over the psychological impact of drug use, he said addicts often exhibited criminal behaviour, including sexual assaults. He announced the establishment of world-class de-addiction centres in all the three regions of the State, and assured that in a year, the drug menace would be significantly curtailed. Drawing parallels between the State's current development agenda and the IT boom in Hyderabad during his previous tenure, he said, 'Back then, we spoke about IT in Hyderabad. Now, we are envisioning a Quantum Valley in Amaravati. But our efforts will go in vain if our youth fall a prey to drug addiction,' he cautioned. He reiterated the government's commitment to the Super Six promises, and criticized the previous regime for burdening the State with ₹10 lakh crore debt. Inspector General of Police and EAGLE head Ake Ravi Krishna said 15 accused involved in drug trafficking and abuse had been arrested and jailed in recent operations. ' Strict action will continue against those involved in drug-related offences,' he warned. Prathipadu MLA Burla Ramanjaneyulu accused the YSRCP regime of turning the State into the 'ganja capital', and praised Mr. Naidu for adopting zero tolerance towards drugs. Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar and several Ministers from the State participated.

Hundreds of students take part in anti-drug awareness rallies at Nellore, Ongole
On the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, SPSR Nellore and Prakasam district administrations organised several rallies and awareness programmes in Nellore and Ongole respectively on Thursday. In Nellore, a rally was conducted from RTC Bus Stand to Kasturbha Kalakshetram, which was followed by a human chain formation at KVR Circle. A meeting was held later at Kasturba Kalakshetram. The events were hosted as per the directions from the State government to create awareness against drug abuse. Along with 600 students, Superintendent of Police (SP) G. Krishnakanth, Joint Collector K. Karthik and several officials participated in the programme. Meanwhile in Ongole, an awareness programme was organised at the Police Parade Grounds, from where a rally was conducted till Addanki Bus Stand Centre. Over 1,000 people, including students, self-help group (SHG) women, ASHA workers, anganwadi staff, other employees, and people participated in this rally. Prakasam SP A.R. Damodar encouraged the participants to scan a QR code created as part of the 'Nisha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' programme and enter their name and other details to avail a certificate of participation in the anti-drug campaign.

International Day against Drug Abuse: Amit Shah vows ruthless war on narco cartels
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): On the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse on Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended greetings to all those fighting against substance abuse and reaffirmed the government's commitment to a drug-free India. In a post on X, Shah said, 'On International Day Against Drug Abuse, warm wishes to all our warriors and allies in our battle for a drug-free Bharat.' Calling drugs the 'biggest scourge for our youth,' Shah emphasised the Modi government's 'whole-of-government approach' in tackling the threat. He said the Centre had taken strong steps not only to dismantle drug networks but also to rehabilitate affected individuals. 'The Modi government is heading with a whole-of-government approach to this threat, striking narco-cartels ruthlessly and bringing back addicted youth to normal life with empathy,' the Home Minister wrote in the post. 'May this day further fortify our resolve against the menace of drug abuse,' he added. Earlier in the day, addressing the state event to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that Delhi Police have arrested at least 1100 people involved in the drug trade in 2025. CM Gupta said, 'This year, in 2025, our Delhi Police has arrested at least 1100 people involved in the drug trade, cases have been registered against them, and all the narcotic drugs found have been seized...' She urged the government, police and society to work together against the drug menace in the national capital. 'The government, police, and society are all working to eradicate this, but we all need to work together as a team. I believe that when we all work together, the menace of drugs will be completely eliminated from society,' Rekha Gupta said.
