How does AMCA compare to F-35, Su-57 and J-20?
F-35 Lightning II (USA): Developed by Lockheed Martin, this jet is considered the most widely deployed fifth-gen fighter. It features advanced stealth, an internal fuel capacity of 18,498 pounds, and a payload of 18,000 pounds. It is powered by a 43,000 lb thrust engine and features the Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL) for secure battlefield communication.
Sukhoi Su-57 (Russia): Russia's stealth jet can reach Mach 1.8 and carry up to 7.4 tonnes of munitions. With a combat range of 1,864 miles and operating altitude of over 54,000 feet, the Su-57 is pitched as a multi-role platform with Russia looking to export it to India and the UAE.
Chengdu J-20 (China): China's stealth fighter is already in service and is often claimed to rival US platforms. It is equipped with long-range missiles and radar-evading technologies.

India has cleared its ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft ( AMCA ) programme, a fifth-generation stealth fighter jet project that aims to elevate the Indian Air Force (IAF) into the elite club of next-gen aerial combat nations. The decision was taken by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday, marking a major leap in India's indigenous defence capabilities. The AMCA project—led by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA)—is designed to produce medium-weight, deep-penetration, stealth aircraft that will operate alongside the existing Tejas Light Combat Aircraft. Together, they will form the core of India's aerial strike power in the coming decades.'In a significant push towards enhancing India's indigenous defence capabilities and fostering a robust domestic aerospace industrial ecosystem, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) Programme Execution Model,' the Ministry of Defence said. The AMCA is more than just a jet. It's India's answer to stealth-heavy, fifth-generation warfare. The twin-engine, 25-tonne aircraft will feature cutting-edge stealth, AI-assisted electronic piloting, and internal weapons bays designed for long-range air-to-air missiles and precision-guided bombs. It also comes with Netcentric Warfare Systems, advanced avionics, and Integrated Vehicle Health Management for predictive maintenance. These features enable seamless coordination with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in real-time combat scenarios. An India Today report confirms the aircraft's internal fuel tank will hold up to 6.5 tonnes, giving it extended operational range. The Indian Express reports the internal weapons bay will carry a payload of up to 1,500 kg.The AMCA's projected cost currently stands at ₹15,000 crore, with full-scale engineering development for five prototypes approved in March 2024.The AMCA is a 25-tonne twin-engine stealth multi-role fighter, featuring cutting-edge stealth design, sensor fusion, and advanced avionics. It is engineered for both deep penetration strike missions and air dominance roles. It includes:The jet can carry up to four long-range air-to-air missiles and several precision-guided munitions internally, with a total payload of 1,500 kg.The timing of the announcement is no coincidence. It comes as China rapidly advances its military technology and deepens its defence relationship with Pakistan. According to a recent US intelligence report, 'Pakistan primarily is a recipient of China's economic and military largesse, and Pakistani forces conduct multiple combined military exercises every year with China's PLA, including a new air exercise completed in November 2024.'The same report noted that over 80% of Pakistan's arms imports come from China, with 'foreign materials and technology supporting Pakistan's WMD programmes very likely acquired primarily from suppliers in China.' These materials are sometimes transshipped through third countries like Hong Kong and the UAE.Further compounding the situation are recent terrorist attacks targeting Chinese workers in Pakistan. Seven Chinese nationals were killed in 2024, straining relations between the two countries.Against this backdrop, India's push for self-reliance in aerospace and its investment in fifth-generation capabilities mark a decisive response.India's AMCA will join an elite list of fifth-generation fighter jets already in operation. These include:Compared to these, AMCA's design focuses on stealth, AI integration, and seamless UAV coordination. Though India is late to the fifth-generation game, its aircraft is expected to match, if not exceed, certain capabilities of its rivals through indigenous innovation and selective foreign collaboration. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has committed to delivering the first operational AMCA by 2035.'This journey began only in 2024, when the Cabinet Committee on Security sanctioned the project. It will take ten years, and we have committed to delivering the platform by 2035,' DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat had said earlier. To develop the jet's complex engine, India is expected to partner with a foreign original equipment manufacturer (OEM), ensuring the platform meets both domestic and export potential.Meanwhile, the IAF is also moving ahead with its Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) procurement programme. A Request for Information (RFI) was issued in April 2019 for 114 fighter aircraft, at an estimated cost of USD 18 billion—making it one of the largest military acquisitions in recent history. For India, the AMCA is not just about matching China or Pakistan. It's about autonomy.India's successful development of the Tejas LCA has already laid the groundwork. Now, with the AMCA, India joins the elite club of nations with fifth-generation fighter capabilities—alongside the US, Russia, and China.Alongside other indigenous programmes such as VSHORAD, MPATGM and LCA Mk II, the AMCA signals a transformative decade ahead for India's defence industry. With the global strategic landscape rapidly shifting, the ability to control the skies is no longer optional—it's existential.

Reddit community on Zepto dark patterns grows to nearly 10,000 users, customers slam hidden charges, fake MRPs

A Reddit community dedicated to calling out shady app practices by Zepto has grown to nearly 10,000 members in less than five months. The quick growth of the 'F*** Zepto' subreddit and the sheer volume of complaints it hosts daily highlights the growing dissatisfaction against the quick-commerce platform led by Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra. has reached out to Zepto for a statement. This story will be updated when the company responds. 'F*** Zepto' is a community on Reddit that serves as 'a platform for customers to call out anything unethical related to Zepto.' Zepto is a quick commerce platform that was launched in 2021 by Stanford dropouts Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra. Like its competitors Blinkit and Instamart, Zepto aims to deliver groceries and household essentials to customers in 10 minutes or less. The 'F*** Zepto' subreddit was created in January 2025. In less than five months, it has amassed more than 9,200 followers. According to its bio, 'This community aims to hold Zepto accountable by exposing' dark patterns, hidden fees, selective pricing, MRP manipulation, misleading discounts and other such malpractices. The subreddit is inundated daily with complaints against Zepto. Some issues that crop up frequently include: Users being unable to use 'free cash': Zepto is known for offering "Zepto Cash" to users. The company claims that this amount – usually ₹100 – can be used to pay for orders. Customers beg to differ. Hundreds of complaints on the F*** Zepto subreddit suggest that users are unable to apply their free cash to pay for Zepto orders. When they do apply it, the full amount is never applied. For example, applying promotional cash of ₹100 will only reduce the total amount by ₹50 or less. Hidden fees: Another issue that is frequently highlighted on Reddit is the several hidden charges that send the bill amount skyrocketing. Users have pointed out that Zepto charges a 'Rain Fee' and a GST on top of the fee; a 'Cash Handling Fee' of ₹10, 'Item Handling Cost'; 'Convenience Fee'; 'Small Cart Fee'; 'Processing Fee' and more. Late deliveries: Many frustrated Zepto customers have taken to Reddit to vent about their deliveries being delayed by hours. MRP manipulation, lack of customer support, being unable to return rotten or expired items are other issues that customers have complained about. Leading players like Zomato's Blinkit and Swiggy's Instamart also have communities dedicated to them on Reddit. However, neither of them has a community dedicated exclusively to critcising their dark practices.

India's fifth generation AMCA needs mission mode to meet deadlines

Over a year after the Cabinet Committee on Security gave its nod for India's first 5th-generation fighter aircraft, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), the Defence Ministry on May 27 cleared the way for the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) under the Defence Research & Development Organisation as the nodal agency to commence work on the design and development of its execution model. The development is welcome, although it's a case of better late than never, considering that India's not-so-friendly neighbourhood already has 5th-generation fighter aircraft among its squadrons. China reportedly has an operational fleet of 180 5th-generation fighter jets, and, according to unconfirmed reports, it unveiled its 6th-generation fighter, the Chengdu J-36, in January. Its all-weather ally Pakistan is said to be procuring 40 more of their 5th-gen fighters. AMCA's first of the five planned prototypes is expected to be unveiled in three years, and its maiden flight is likely to take off no earlier than 2028. Its operational roll-out can be expected only by 2035. The initial prototypes may cost approximately ₹1,720 crore each, but this could be reduced to ₹860 crore when production scales up. The overall project has been allocated ₹15,000 crore. This presents a time span with possible cost escalations, during which equations about air power balance with neighbours may likely turn to India's disadvantage. This must be viewed against the backdrop of the Indian Air Force already being stretched thin, with the squadron strength down to 31 against the authorised 42.

But now, they face a growing threat from low-cost travel eSIM providers, which are offering similar services at lower a typical telco plan might cost ₹3,000-5,000 for 7-10 days of validity with limited data, eSIM providers such as Saily, Jetpac and Matrix offer data-only plans for less than half that rate, said industry executives and companies did not immediately respond to ET's emails seeking however, point to the low penetration of eSIMs in India as a challenge for the low-fee service providers. Nevertheless, telecom operators are sweetening their offerings in a bid to keep their higher revenue generating subscribers from opting for the services of low-cost travel eSIM providers. Indians travelling abroad have generally been using a basic telecom plan, primarily for receiving one-time passwords (OTPs) that are needed for financial transactions, and supplementing it with a travel eSIM or local physical SIM for data, said Siddhant Cally, research analyst at Counterpoint Research. Over the last one month or so, both Airtel and Vodafone Idea have come out with upgraded international roaming plans, with enhanced data benefits, flexible activation, seamless coverage across countries, and longer validity in a bid to shore up benefits to premium customers travelling abroad."Telcos are increasing their focus on international roaming plans, despite it not being a very high-revenue contributing business segment," said Balaji Subramanian, analyst at IIFL Securities . "Any additional revenue, even if a small percentage (estimated potentially at 1-1.5% of mobile revenue, or ₹1,000-1500 crore annually), is welcome." He said offering attractively priced roaming plans is viewed as a very effective tool to improve customer stickiness and reduce churn, especially among higher average revenue per user (ARPU) customers who travel abroad frequently. Meeting the needs of higher-segment customers who travel abroad enhances their overall experience with the network, Subramanian top telecom executives such as Bharti Airtel managing director and chief executive Gopal Vittal had highlighted international roaming as strategically important for retaining high-value customers and differentiating the company's offerings in a competitive market, despite being a relatively small contributor to overall travel by Indians has rebounded sharply since the pandemic, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. In 2024, outbound departures rose to 30.2 million, up 8% from 2023, which had recorded a 29% year-on-year jump, according to a Thomas Cook report. The previous peak was 26.9 million in foreign travellers spend $12-20 per trip on travel eSIMs, Counterpoint Research of eSIMs typically operate as light MVNOs (mobile virtual network operator), which purchase connectivity in bulk from roaming aggregators, offering predominantly data-only plans, often excluding SMS or voice services, which keep costs low.
