Templegate's epic Royal Ascot ante-post tips including 50-1 roughie backed for ‘major improvement'
There could be a Royal winner lurking in the shadows
THE sun is shining, the suits are in the dry cleaners and the Pimm's is about to flow - yep, Royal Ascot is almost here.
But the biggest Flat meeting of the year, which gets underway on Tuesday, June 17, is so much more than a social occasion.

Here at Sun Racing the only thing we're bothered about is backing winners and bashing the bookies.
Luckily, there is no one better to do that than our top tipster Steve Mullen aka Templegate.
He tipped up Royal Hunt Cup winner Wild Tiger at 22-1 last year and watched him win at 11-2.
Here, he delivers four more sizzling ante-post punts.
QIRAT – Royal Hunt Cup 20-1
He ran an absolute cracker when beaten in a photo for the Victoria Cup here last time and clearly loves the track and a big field.
That was over 7f but he does stay the mile strongly too and may have just needed the run after six months off.
Hopefully the decent weather continues as quick ground suits and he can land another big prize for Ralph Beckett.
CICEROS GIFT – Royal Hunt Cup 25-1
Given it's such a hot race we can throw two darts at the Hunt Cup and include Ciceros Gift who would come right into it on softer conditions.
He finished strongly when third in the Group 2 Sandown Mile last time and was a solid seventh in the Balmoral here in October.
He has a big weight but is good enough to make the frame.
GOLDEN HANDSHAKE – King George Handicap
There's nothing the Royal Ascot crowd loves more than seeing the King's red and purple colours coming home in front.
And the hats could be coming off next month for Golden Handshake who looks like he's being prepared for the King George V Handicap.
That's the contest for three-year-olds on the Thursday and Golden Handshake's trainer won it for the King in 2023 with Desert Hero.
This year's hopeful really caught the eye with an excellent second at Nottingham on May 20 when he was kept out the back for a long way before coming home strongly.
The extra two furlongs at the Royal meeting should be ideal and he's a nice prospect.
He needs another run for a handicap mark then it will be all systems go at Ascot.
TIME TO TURN – Coventry Stakes 50-1
This son of Dark Angel was just beaten by stablemate Maximised in a good novice contest at Haydock last week.
William Buick chose him over the winner and he looked very green when asked to make his effort.
Buick didn't ask too many questions and he should take a major step forward from this and looks a better long-term prospect than the winner.
He's 50-1 for the Coventry Stakes which is worth a small interest over Maximise who is 14s.

PRIDE OF ARRAS (3.30 Epsom, nap) He was extremely impressive when winning the Dante at York last time on just his second outing. That was his first start for nine months and he burst through the line to suggest this longer trip will be fine. His high draw could be tricky but not impossible and he has more to come. DOCKLANDS (1.35 Epsom, nb) He has some fancy Group 1 form including his second in the Queen Anne at last year's Royal Ascot. He was sent all over the globe after that with solid results and ran a solid comeback at Ascot last time. He'll be fitter for that and has won on quick and slow ground. VALVANO (4.15 Epsom, treble) He showed lots of promise last season and returned with a solid fourth at Goodwood last time. He should improve for that fitness wise and he handles any ground. Templegate's TV verdicts EPSOM 1.00 IF it comes up properly soft by racetime, Sparks Fly would be a cracking bet given her superb record in testing conditions. But assuming it's good to soft or quicker, ROYAL DRESS is the one to be on. She was an unlucky third in this last year before striking in this grade at The Curragh. She has since held her own in better races including when third at York last time. William Buick is an eyecatching booking too. Bermuda Longtail looked promising when beaten half a length in a York Listed contest last month and has much more to come. She gets plenty of weight for age too. Skellet progressed last season and is another who should be capable of better for Ralph Beckett. 1.35 DOCKLANDS has some fancy Group 1 form including his second in the Queen Anne at last year's Royal Ascot. He was sent all over the globe after that with solid results and ran a solid comeback at Ascot last time. He'll be fitter for that and has won on quick and slow ground. Persica didn't fire in the Lockinge last time but took a Newmarket Group 3 easily enough on comeback and has won here before. Ryan Moore's a good booking and he's a big threat. Royal Playwright gets the best part of a stone from his older rivals and didn't get the run of the race in the Dante last time. He could take a major step forward here. Royal Dubai wasn't disgraced at Ascot last time and looks the pick of the bigger prices. 2.10 AGAINST THE WIND could be the answer to this tricky puzzle. He has plenty of weight but has been running well with a Thirsk win followed by a fine York third last time. He gets away quickly so should be suited by this track. Naana's Sparkle ran a nice race at Goodwood last time when third and showed lots of pace. He looks on a fair mark. Ruby's Profit got the better of Mademoiselle in that race and they should both be right at home here too after showing a lot of boot. Tees Aggregates saves his best for Catterick so should love Epsom which is another tricky track. He may not be quite good enough to win but could be an each-way bet if you can get extra places. Blinky won a couple on the all-weather before a decent third at Chester last time. A repeat of that would put him in the place picture from what should be an ideal draw. 2.45 JER BATT always faced a tough task from a wide draw at Chester last time yet still ran a good race. He has some fine handicap form over this trip yet is still on a fair weight and the booking of Oisin Murphy is a plus. He'll be right there. Clarendon House is quirky but has enough quality to figure if he fancies it. He went well in the Group 3 Palace House at Newmarket last time. Last year's winner Dream Composer was also badly drawn at Chester latest but looked much better when second at Pontefract on comeback. He can figure again. Jm Jungle has been placed in hot York handicaps on his past two outings. He likes this trip and is a quick starter so has every chance. Vintage Clarets showed positive signs on the Knavesmire latest and is in the each-way picture too. 3.30 PRIDE OF ARRAS was a brilliant Dante winner at York and has more to come. French raider Midak looks overpriced, while Lambourn would have a say if the rain comes. Cieran Slicker endures nightmare start for Scotland as Steve Clarke's men suffer TWO major blunders against Iceland
GOALKEEPER Cieran Slicker's debut for Scotland could not have got off to a worse start against Iceland. It meant Clarke had to turn to his bench. And, a few minutes later, Slicker was forced to pick the ball out of his net with one of his first touches, as his dream moment turned into a nightmare. Andri Gudjohnsen capitalised on the goalkeeper's slack pass out, rifling the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box to give the visitors the lead on eight minutes. That mistake clearly dented the 22-year-old's confidence as he needlessly gave the ball away just minutes later before enduring a few other nervy moments. A few shakes of the head after the goal showed his frustration, with his arm going up to his team-mates to acknowledge his mistake. Scotland's next match is against Liechtenstein on Monday before going into the World Cup qualifiers in September. And on this evidence of this display, it is going to have to be a vastly improved performance. Clarke gave debut starts to Max Johnston, fresh from winning the Austrian Bundesliga with Sturm Graz, and striker George Hirst, while Kieran Tierney earned his 50th cap. John Souttar levelled for Scotland half way through the first half, converting Johnston's corner with a header. Steve Clarke likes Lennon Miller's stated ambition to become one of Scotland's top players But the Scots conceded again in calamitous fashion just before the break. An Iceland corner was not properly dealt with by the defence. The ball cannoned off Souttar inside the six-yard box and then Ferguson, with Slicker not covering himself in glory as the ball crept over the line. Incredibly, it went bad to worse for Slicker as Iceland made it three and it was another goalkeeping howler. More to follow... No excuses from Graffard after Calandagan misses out again
A brilliant winner of the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot last summer, the four-year-old went on to give Derby and Eclipse hero City Of Troy a run for his money in the Juddmonte International at York before suffering a narrow defeat behind Anmaat in Ascot's Champion Stakes. Having picked up the silver medal for the third time in succession on his return to action in the Dubai Sheema Classic in late March, Calandagan was an 8-13 favourite to break his top-level duck on the Surrey Downs but again came off second-best, with Aidan O'Brien's Jan Brueghel keeping him at bay by half a length. 'I don't have any excuses. The horse had the perfect run; Mickael (Barzalona) gave him a ride with plenty of thought. Going down the hill he found himself behind Ryan (Moore, riding Jan Brueghel) and gave the horse plenty of time to balance himself,' said Graffard. 'He challenged him, probably took the lead for a moment and then just as they started to climb again, you could see that Ryan was finding more. 'He's a very talented horse who needs to win a Group One, but I'm sure he will. He always gives his best. I don't have any excuses. It was a good performance from him.' Considering future plans, the French trainer added: 'He's in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, don't forget he ran in Dubai so hasn't run in France this year. 'Did I do enough at home? I think he was ready, but a tough O'Brien horse beat me, a horse who will keep finding more.' Barzalona felt Calandagan did not help his cause at the start. He said: 'He's always slowly away, we cannot manage differently with him at the start, but once he found his rhythm I was behind Ryan at Tattenham Corner and I was pretty happy to be there. 'I think I hit the front 100 yards before the line and he kind of just stayed on and got a bit tired going uphill. The O'Brien horse was just a little bit stronger today. 'I hope one day we will be able to break a little bit faster and be able to get a better position earlier, but he has his own rhythm and we'll have to deal with that for the moment. 'He's getting more mature and it's the first time he's run over this kind of different track, so he ran well.' Seven lengths further behind in third was Marco Botti's Hong Kong Vase hero Giavellotto. 'It was a good run, but they were a couple of proper horses in front of us,' said the Newmarket handler. 'My horse has run with credit, but Aidan said they would go hard and that's the way it turned out.'
