Giant sculpture of Gandalf riding an eagle to be removed from Wellington Airport
The sculptures, one bearing the wizard Gandalf and which hover in the terminal, have delighted tourists and scared children since 2013.

Their tenure was eventful – one became unmoored from its fixings during a severe earthquake in 2016 and plummeted onto the terminal floor below. No one was hurt.
But this month the majestic creatures, which underscore the capital city's connection to Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit films, will depart the terminal for good, Wellington Airport announced on Monday.
'It's been quite a Lord Of The Rings-heavy storytelling theme in here,' said airport chief executive Matt Clarke. 'Now we're looking to change that to something new.'
'It breaks my heart,' said one traveller, Verity Johnson, who sat beneath a grasping eagle claw in the food court on Monday. The sculptures had impressed her since she was young. 'Please, please reconsider.'

'Taking them away is un-New Zealand,' joked another airport visitor, Michael Parks.
The eagles were crafted by the film props and effects company Weta Workshop, which created tens of thousands of props for the Oscar-winning fantasy films directed by Jackson – one of Wellington's best-known residents, who lives near the airport.

The movies based on JRR Tolkien's beloved novels, generated billions of dollars in tourism revenue for New Zealand and employed thousands of people in Wellington over the 15 years of their production.
But during the years the eagles have hovered in the terminal, Tolkien tourism has waned in Wellington — although the city will perhaps always be synonymous with Jackson's films.

Guided tours still convey fans to the settings of famous scenes from the films and to visit production companies such as Weta, which will create a new display for the airport, to be unveiled later this year, Mr Clarke said.
Travellers have until Friday to admire the birds, which will then be put into storage, Mr Clarke said. He hopes the creatures – which each feature 1,000 3D printed feathers – will find a home at a museum.
'It's a spectacular thing for little kids to see,' Mr Clarke said. 'Even your old, grizzled businessmen, they still pull out their phones and take a quick cheeky photo too.'
Wellington Airport is not losing its quirky side. An enormous sculpture of The Hobbit's gold-hoarding dragon, Smaug, will remain overlooking the check-in counters.

'The Lord of the Rings - A Musical Tale' review: Ambitious, but plenty of off-the-cuff fun
Well Frodo, we're not in The Shire anymore. If you've ever longed to wander Middle-earth – from the cosy lanes of Hobbiton to the lofty halls of Rivendell, and even the fiery pits of Mordor – grab a stall seat at The Lord of the Rings: A Musical Tale, now at the Sands Theatre till August 31. The story doesn't just play out on stage – it happens all around you. The pre-show is a delightful shindig: hobbits scurry through the aisles, ring-toss games unfold, and you're invited to belt out "Happy Birthday" to Bilbo in surprisingly theatrical style. The story truly unfolds when Frodo inherits a mysterious gold ring, setting him on a perilous journey to Mordor to confront evil with the Fellowship. Time Out tip: a front-row stall gets you maximum Middle-earth mingling – we had Gandalf behind us and Gollum crawling past in the dark. Folk-tinged, Mumford & Sons-style tunes keep things breezy, and it's charming to see the cast double as musicians – strumming guitars, plucking violins, even coaxing a harp. But the songs are – dare we say – forgettable and don't add to the story much. A little disappointing coming from multi-award-winning composer A.R. Rahman. Nonetheless, Stefanie Caccamo and Jemma Rix blew us away with soaring vocals as Arwen and Galadriel, punching through their musical numbers. However, surtitles would have been handy when Elvish or Dwarvish lyrics and dialogues take over. While the cast are the heroes here, the true villain is the running time. Three hefty tomes are crammed into a three-hour sprint, with Act I zipping through The Fellowship of the Ring and Act II hurtling through the rest like it's late for a very important appointment with Mount Doom. The pace leaves no room for the story to breathe, and unless you already know your Baggins from your Balrog, you'll be wandering in the dark. For context: each of Peter Jackson's films runs around three hours – and he still needed extended cuts to fit in all the key moments. Now imagine trying to squeeze the whole trilogy into a single musical. The show is a mixed bag. But there are some eye-catching visuals to bring the story to life – washes and flashes of coloured lights, Nazgûl puppet heads looming over the audience, spotlit Frodo halting in the darkness as the Ring's power floods him, and a billowing sheet morphing into the fiery beast that Gandalf famously shall not let pass. There's also a playful run-in with an oversized spider. For Tolkien diehards, it's an intriguing – if imperfect – addition to the legendarium. For everyone else, it's like being dropped into Mordor without so much as a map. But hey – seeing Gollum hiss 'my precious' in the flesh? It's pretty worth it.

Weinstein could face trial for a third time on rape charge
Harvey Weinstein is set to face his third trial in New York City in a sexual assault case, after the jury failed to reach a verdict on a rape charge. Weinstein, 73, was convicted in June of forcing oral sex on TV and movie production assistant and producer Miriam Haley in 2006. At the same time, the jury acquitted him of forcing oral sex on another woman, one-time model Kaja Sokola, but couldn't decide on a charge that he raped hairstylist and actor Jessica Mann in 2013. He is due to be sentenced on September 30 for the Haley conviction, but only if the new trial relating to the Mann charges does not go ahead. If there is a retrial, the judge wants it to happen in the next few months. Prosecutors and Weinstein's lawyers vowed on Wednesday that they were willing to square off at yet another trial, which would be his third in New York and fourth overall. But Weinstein's lawyers aren't ruling out the possibility of reaching a deal to resolve the case, though they also emphasise he's not willing to plead guilty to raping Mann, and they are pressing prosecutors simply to abandon that charge. Harvey Weinstein's lawyers have said they are ready to fight the trial. / Credit: AP For the charge relating to Mann, any conviction is punishable by up to four years in prison, less than Weinstein has already served, and far less than the potential 25 years he faces for his conviction related to Haley. At Weinstein's first trial in 2020, jurors convicted him of raping Mann and forcing oral sex on Haley. Then an appeals court overturned those convictions in 2024 and sent the case back for retrial because of legal issues involving other women's testimony. This spring, a new jury convicted him again of sexually assaulting Haley and acquitted him of doing the same to another woman who wasn't part of the first trial. But amid fractious deliberations, the majority-female jury found themselves stuck on the charge related to Mann. Mann has testified that she also had a consensual, on-and-off relationship with the then-married Weinstein, but that she told him 'I don't want to do this' as he cornered her in the hotel room. She said he persevered with advances and demands until she 'just gave up'. If an autumn trial happens, it would likely put Weinstein's high-profile #MeToo case back in court as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is in the final stage of his reelection bid. Bragg, a first-term Democrat who made prosecuting sex crimes cases a priority, has expressed satisfaction with Weinstein's conviction on a criminal sex act charge related to Haley. Bragg has said Mann deserves a verdict on her part of the case. Weinstein lawyer Arthur Aidala told reporters outside court that, in his view, it's up to prosecutors to resolve the rape charge, either by dropping it and clearing the way for sentencing, or by promptly taking it to trial again. Weinstein sat in court in a wheelchair while wearing a blue suit and black-rimmed glasses. The Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love producer is committed to fighting the rape charge at another trial, Aidala said, though the lawyer added: 'I've been doing this long enough to say never say never.' Weinstein has also been convicted of sex crimes in California; he's appealing that verdict. He denies all of the allegations against him.
