Two Thirds Of Trash Found In Global Rivers Is Plastic, Study Finds

Pieces of plastic, including bottles, bags, straws and cutlery, make up two thirds of the rubbish found in rivers around the world, according to a new analysis.
The research by experts at the University of California, Santa Barbara, used on-the-ground data from Mexico, Jamaica, Panama, Ecuador, Kenya, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
Over the three-year period, local teams collectively removed and analyzed 3.8 million kilograms of river debris, the equivalent to 380,000,000 single-use plastic water bottles, with 66% classified as microplastic.
The researchers also found substantial variation in the amount of plastic pollution intercepted in rivers studied, but all contained plastic debris of some sort.
Based on their findings, researchers now estimate 1.95 million metric tons of travels down rivers worldwide every year.
The study has been published as negotiators in Geneva failed to reach an agreement on an international treaty to curb plastic pollution.
Lead author, Chase Brewster, a project scientist in University of California, Santa Barbara's Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory, said it was largest continuous dataset, which has ever been produced on the subject of plastic pollution in rivers, in an interview.
Brewster added the research helps underline and scope and the scale of the issue around the world.
'This problem is not going away and it is global,' he told me. 'We should not be ignoring in this day and age the fact two thirds of everything coming down our rivers is now plastic.'
Brewster said the researchers on the project also engaged with local communities and he hoped the data would help them take targeted action
'The more involved and engaged people are, and the more empowered they feel in their communities, the more likely they are to change behavior and influence legislation in their areas.
'More often than not, these communities are not trying to pollute. It's the larger institutions who are failing them. There's no access to waste management services, or other options.'
Brewster said the report makes a number of recommendations, including creating more of a value for plastic waste to discourage people from throwing it away and letting it go to waste.
He added one of the big problems is that it is still cheaper to produce virgin plastic than it is to make recycled plastic, so there need to be incentives like bottle deposit fees, and virgin production caps to create better market conditions for a circular economy.
The study also calls for greater support for the informal waste-picking sector in certain parts of the world and more investment in waste management and recycling infrastructure and services.
It also recommends more consistent and more transparent monitoring and data collection to inform targeted upstream actions.
In addition, it calls for well-designed local and national policies as well as ambitious international frameworks to address the different scales of the problem.
'Negotiators and country officials can use this data to assess the river plastic pollution problem in real life, look at differences in pollution in different places, and test ideas about what policies and systems are working,' Brewster added.
Anthony Merante, senior plastics campaigner at Oceana Canada, said the oceans have become the dumping grounds for the world's plastic waste, in an email.
Merante added people have over-plasticized their lives and invested in single-use, disposable systems hoping that recycling will save us.
'Not a single river studied was free from plastic, emphasizing that this is a planetary problem we all must act to correct,' he said.
'The solution is clear; we need to reduce plastic production and use and invest in solutions that actually work like refill and reuse.'

Climate change continues to have a profound impact on the Great Lakes region, bringing more extreme weather, declining fish populations, and subtle but profound economic transformation. That's according to a new report by the Environmental Law and Policy Center, conducted by researchers around the Great Lakes. The report is an update to a 2019 report examining the effects of climate change on the lakes themselves and surrounding region. Despite the discouraging tendency these days to see everything through a political prism, the science itself is incontestable and apolitical: Climate change is caused by human activity, primarily the use of fossil fuels, like coal, oil and gas. Fossil fuels account for 75% of greenhouse gas emissions, which trap heat and warm the planet. A warmer planet incites a ripple effect — and yes, even in the Great Lakes, a place that many consider a climate haven. Since 1951, annual average air temperatures have increased by nearly 3 degrees Fahrenheit in the U.S Great Lakes region — a stunning change given the massive cooling effect the lakes have on the region. "Climate is one of the most important issues facing humanity," said Don Wuebbles, lead author on the assessment and emeritus professor at the University of Illinois. "We are driving changes and now we have to figure out together what do we do about it." Here are eight takeaways from the climate change report. More: Wisconsin's 2024 climate review: A year of unprecedented weather, and record highs and lows More dangerous heat waves The Great Lakes region warmed substantially faster in the six years since the last assessment than it did in decades prior, the report shows. And with this warming trend, dangerously hot days are happening more often, especially in urban heat islands where surfaces like parking lots, sidewalks and streets absorb and hold onto heat. In Milwaukee, for instance, a mapping campaign by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources showed that at night, there can be a 10-degree temperature difference between the hottest and coolest parts of the city. By the 2030s, urban areas like Chicago could face more than 200 hours of temperatures exceeding 95°F — up sharply from just 30 hours in recent years. This surge in extreme heat drives up energy demand and poses serious health risks to vulnerable populations. More: Many Milwaukeeans live in a heat island, and 'we can't air condition our way out of this' In Milwaukee, one of the country's most racially segregated cities, where historical redlining has pushed communities of color into more industrial areas, urban heat islands continue to reinforce longstanding inequities. The report also shows that the number of cool nights continues to decline, another alarming trend given extreme nighttime heat can actually be deadlier than daytime heat. More extreme rain events Since 1951, annual total precipitation has increased by 15% in the U.S. Great Lakes region. With that, the frequency of extreme precipitation events has also continued to increase, the report shows. Between 2017 and 2024, the number of days with at least 2 inches of precipitation was 6% higher than the 1986-2016 average and 37% higher than what scientists refer to as the baseline period of 1901-1960. Declining ice cover, rising lake levels The report confirms growing evidence that winters in the Great Lakes region are being hit hardest by climate change. Winter is the fastest warming season in the region, resulting in the steady decline in ice cover over the past five decades. The decline has also been met with extreme swings from near record highs to near record lows within a few years. Average ice cover across all five Great Lakes during the 2024 ice season was the lowest on record since scientists began recording it more than 50 years ago. More: New data shows winters in Great Lakes region shrinking by two or more weeks since 1995 One surprising finding, Wuebbles said, is that while climate change is leading to greater fluctuations in lake levels, they are generally rising overall. A 2022 modeling study projected that by mid-century, Great Lakes water levels could rise upwards of 17.3 inches in Lake Michigan and Huron, and 7.5 inches in Lake Superior. Warming water temperatures According to the report, summer lake surface temperatures have increased in recent decades. For instance, Lake Superior summer temperatures increased by nearly 5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1979 to 2023 − the most of any of the Great Lakes. In 2024, Lakes Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario all experienced record-high average surface temperatures in 2024. The report also highlights that the greatest rates of temperature increase continue to be in deeper waters, with smaller increases near shorelines. Winter's influence in deeper waters is also disappearing, with shifts in fall overturn and winter cooling that could impact the lake's ecosystem. Vanishing fish populations The report highlights that lake whitefish are on the verge of collapse, with stock assessment models showing that in Lake Michigan the prized species may disappear from some locations within five years. And even if commercial fishing for lake whitefish ceases, they could still face local or regional extinction. Warming winters and reduced ice cover is largely to blame, the report says, as ice cover protects whitefish eggs along the shoreline. However, another reason for the decline is invasive zebra and quagga mussels, which pick off larval whitefish before they reach adulthood. In Wisconsin, warming summer stream and river temperatures are expected to reduce habitat for brook and brown trout by 68% and 32%, respectively, by mid-century. Ticks are expanding their range Many kinds of ticks are expanding their range and growing more abundant in the Midwest, presenting an increased risk for disease in humans and wildlife. For instance, the report highlights warming temperatures have pushed black legged ticks, a primary carrier of Lyme disease, northward. The lone star tick, which is known for causing a life-threatening allergy to red meat, has also expanded its range. Old growth forests are still helping − for now The updated assessment also highlighted that old growth forests are still taking in a significant amount of carbon dioxide out of the air For instance, tree ring data from 9,000 trees in northern Wisconsin show older trees store more carbon than scientists previously thought. The fact that old-growth trees store more carbon underscores why cutting them down is a serious mistake, Wuebbles said. Delaying tree harvests and protecting older forests enhances carbon sequestration, making untouched forests vital for reducing carbon dioxide and combating climate change. Rising economic toll Communities around the region have strong ties to the Great Lakes, and economic impacts of climate change are expected to cross all sectors. The report notes that the Anishinaabeg, which include the Ojibwe, Ottawa and Potawatomi, are poised to be disproportionately affected by climate change. Impacts to land, water, food and plant and animal species threaten practices as well as cultural sites. Reductions in lake ice cover are disrupting local economies around the Great Lakes by affecting fishing, winter sports, shipping schedules and biological processes crucial to aquatic ecosystems. Public health risks are rising due to more frequent heat waves, flooding and the spread of vector-borne diseases like those carried by mosquitoes and ticks. Industries and transportation systems face challenges from drought, extreme heat and infrastructure damage, while changing lake conditions impact shipping efficiency. Tourism and fishing are also affected, with shorter winters reducing seasonal activities and warming waters threatening cold-water fish species but benefiting warm-water ones. Never-before-seen cousin of Lucy might have lived at the same site as the oldest known human species, new study suggests

Roughly 2.6 million-year-old fossilized teeth found in Ethiopia might belong to a previously unknown early human relative, researchers say. The teeth are from a species of Australopithecus, the genus that includes Lucy (A. afarensis). But these newly discovered teeth don't appear to belong to any known species of Australopithecus, according to a new study published in the journal Nature on Wednesday (Aug. 13). What's more, at the same site the researchers found extremely old teeth from Homo, the genus that includes modern humans (Homo sapiens). These teeth may belong to the oldest known Homo species on record, which scientists haven't yet named, the study found. These new discoveries show that at least two lineages of early hominins — a group that includes humans and our closest relatives — coexisted in the same region around 2.6 million years ago, the researchers said. Discoveries at Ledi-Geraru archaeological site The researchers found the teeth at the Ledi-Geraru archaeological site in northeastern Ethiopia, which is known for earlier groundbreaking discoveries: a 2.8 million-year-old jawbone that's the oldest known human specimen, as well as some of the oldest known stone tools made by hominins, which date to 2.6 million years ago. Paleontologists and archaeologists hypothesize that the region was an open and arid grassy plain during this period, based on grass-eating animal fossils from that time. The area offered resources Homo and Australopithecus could use, Frances Forrest, an archaeologist at Fairfield University in Connecticut who was not involved with the new research, told Live Science in an email. Grasslands and rivers would have provided water to drink, plants to eat and large animals to hunt. Related: 'Huge surprise' reveals how some humans left Africa 50,000 years ago But the unusually rich fossil record in this area could also be because of excellent preservation of remains, due to volcanic eruptions, for example — not necessarily that this was a hominin hotspot, Forrest said. Australopithecus and Homo teeth In the new study, the researchers used layers of volcanic ash above and below the newly discovered fossils to determine their age. Of the 13 teeth discovered, the team found 10 are 2.63 million years old and belonged to an unidentified species of Australopithecus, which for now the researchers are calling the Ledi-Geraru Australopithecus. Previously, researchers had found remains in the region from A. afarensis and Australopithecus garhi. But the newfound teeth look different from the teeth of those species. "It doesn't match any of these, so it could be a new species," study co-author Kaye Reed, a paleoecologist at Arizona State University, told Live Science. However, the research team hasn't officially named it as a newly identified species because the teeth don't have any especially unique features. "In the fossil record, researchers usually define a new species by finding anatomical traits that consistently differ from those of known species," Forrest said, adding that the evidence from this discovery is too limited to define a new species. The researchers also identified two teeth that are 2.59 million years old, and one that is 2.78 million years old, all belonging to the genus Homo, which Reed believes are from the same species as the oldest known Homo specimen — the jawbone discovered in Ledi-Geraru — although this hasn't been confirmed. The new discovery means at least three hominin species were living in this region of Ethiopia before 2.5 million years ago: the Homo and Australopithecus species these teeth belong to, as well as A. garhi. At the same time, A. africanus lived in South Africa, and Paranthropus, another hominin genus, lived in what is now Kenya, Tanzania and southern Ethiopia. This evolutionary trial-and-error within the extended hominin family is why humans' evolutionary tree is considered "bushy" rather than linear. "It has become clear over the last decade or so that during most of our evolutionary history … there have been multiple species of human relatives that existed at the same time," John Hawks, an anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who was not involved in the new research, told Live Science. "The new paper tells us this is happening in Ethiopia … [in] a really interesting time frame, because it's maybe the earliest population of our genus Homo." Next steps The research team is now studying the enamel on the newfound teeth, as their chemistry can reveal what these species were eating. This may shed light on whether these hominins were eating the same things and competing for similar resources. "Right now, we can say very little with certainty about direct interaction between Australopithecus and Homo," Forrest said. "We know that both genera sometimes overlapped in time and space, but there is no behavioral evidence linking the two." The fact these early hominins may have lived closer together than primates typically do now is interesting, Hawks said. "They probably weren't eating the same things," Reed noted. "But right now we don't really know." The researchers are also searching for more information and fossils at the site. "Everything we find is a piece in the puzzle of human evolution," Reed said.
