OAKLEY, Kan. (KSNW) — A woman looking for books in a Little Free Library box found something that should not have been there. Right next to the children's book 'The Little Engine That Could' was the drug used to treat drug overdoses.
The woman said it was the second time this week someone had put naloxone in one of Oakley's mini libraries.
Kansas declares emergency, waives trucking hours for fuel
She was concerned that little children use the libraries and might try to open the opioid-overdose antidote. She took the kits out and gave them to law enforcement.
It prompted the Oakley Police Department to post a message on social media. Police say someone had good intentions, but the wrong solution.
'While we understand the importance of this lifesaving drug and we appreciate the fact that someone out there wishes for it to be readily accessible for people in need, placing it in places readily available for children is not acceptable,' the department said.
Everyone has access to the little libraries, including children who are naturally curious. Police say children might open the naloxone box and mess with it.
The Oakley Police Department said naloxone is said to have no adverse effects, even if it is not needed. However, there are still concerns about allergies and other issues if children get their hands on it.
Drug Addiction: Where to Find Help
Police ask that if you find naloxone in a Little Free Library, take it to the police department.
'To whomever is putting it in these places, thank you for caring about the people who need it, but PLEASE refrain from placing it in areas that are accessible to children,' the post goes on to say. 'Naloxone also needs to be stored in a temperature-controlled environment so placing it in these boxes will essentially ruin the medication and it will not help anyone who needs it anyway.'
The department asks that you call the police if you find an unknown substance in a public place. Officers have gloves and training to handle unknown substances.

Nonprofit helping Wichita family after 4-year-old shot

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita police are searching for the person who opened fire on a car in north Wichita, injuring a 4-year-old boy and an adult Sunday night. Cure Violence ICT says they've been walking around the neighborhood near 26th and Park Place, talking with community members about reducing gun violence. Members say they also want the family affected by this violence to know they're here to support them. Durell Gilmore hands out flyers to people who live in north Wichita. 'We're here to let people know about the community-based solutions of Cure Violence ICT,' said Gilmore. Gilmore serves as a violence interrupter to curb violence in Wichita. 'The mission is to stop the shootings and stop the killings,' said Gilmore. Teen arrested for pointing gun, shooting at Wichita police The 4-year-old boy suffered gunshot wounds to his back and buttocks, while the 32-year-old man suffered a gunshot to his upper back. Both went to the hospital with what police describe as critical but non-life-threatening injuries. 'So when we canvass, we canvass the area around the incident that was involved, because we know, again, that a shooting disrupts more than just the individuals that were involved,' said Gilmore. Members say reducing gun violence starts from within the community. 'We have to understand who you know; we need to get to know who our neighbors are. Get to know who the neighbors are, who you know, what kids are playing outside,' said Raquel Reyes. Cure Violence ICT team members say they'll continue to keep in contact with the family. 'Sometimes conflict happens. What doesn't have to happen is a child being shot,' said Gilmore. The child and the man who were shot went to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. If anyone has any information, they are asked to call detectives at 316-268-4407 or contact Crime Stoppers by calling 316-267-2111, submitting a tip online, or submitting a tip through their mobile app, which is available through Google Play and Apple's App Store. Shull has an emergency substitute teaching license that only permits her to work in the Nickerson school district. Blue Alert: Armed suspect on the run after shooting Lee's Summit officer, police say In May, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office told KSN News that the Reno County Sheriff's Office had asked Sedgwick County to investigate a case involving Nickerson schools. On Friday, the Sedgwick County District Attorney was approved to be a special prosecutor in the case, and he filed the charges electronically in Reno County. KSN News reached out to the Nickerson USD 309 superintendent for a comment and to see if Shull is still employed. 'You apparently have more information on this than I do,' Superintendent Curtis Nightingale responded. 'All I can confirm for you is that she was a part-time, substitute teacher until April of this year. Anything else you need to know will need to come from the law enforcement agencies handling the investigation.' Shull's teaching license expires on June 30. She has bonded out of jail. Her first appearance in court is not yet scheduled. A protective order forbids her from having any contact with the alleged victims and any witnesses. For more Kansas news, click here.
