How to get cheap car insurance
CAR insurance is an essential cost that you hope to never use but will need to cover the costs of theft or damage to your vehicle.
It's a legal requirement to have car insurance, and going without it could land you with a £300 fine, six penalty points on your licence and even a criminal conviction.
But there are several ways to slash your premiums.
Pay upfront
Insurers give you the choice of paying for insurance monthly or upfront.
Paying monthly spreads the cost of your cover but the insurer adds interest charges which means the average motorist pays around ten per cent more overall.
If you pay for your car insurance annually you don't pay any interest.
A typical motorist can save up to £225 a year by paying in one go, according to comparison site MoneySuperMarket.
Increase your excess
The excess is what you agree to pay each time you need to make a claim on your policy.
You can usually choose your own excess when setting up a policy and it can be as low as £100 and as high as £500 or more.
The higher your excess, the lower your premium and vice versa.
This means you could bring the cost of your insurance down by agreeing to pay more if you do need to make a claim.
But before you hike your excess, make sure you would be able to pay in the event that you do need to make a claim.
Tweak your job
Certain jobs are seen as more risky than others for insurance purposes.
Making small but accurate changes to your job title can save you money.
For example, swapping your role from "chef" to "caterer" can save you £20, comparison site GoCompare found.
And changing your role from "fast food delivery driver" to "delivery driver" could save you £40.
But lying about your job could invalidate your policy so make sure any changes are legitimate and accurate.
Shop around
Not all comparison sites have the same range of insurers so to get the best price it's a good idea to check two or three from Go Compare, Comparethemarket, MoneySupermarket and Confused.com.
Insurer Direct Line is also not on comparison sites so check its prices directly.
You can also get a free cash bonus by going via a cashback site such as Topcashback or Quidco.
Save the date
Renewing your car insurance sooner rather than later could save you some cash.
New cover becomes more expensive the closer you get to the renewal date.
But you can buy your car insurance up to 29 days before the policy start date and 'lock in' the price you're quoted on that day.
A typical driver can save up to £265 buying new cover at least 27 days before their current policy ends, according to Go Compare.

Nearly one in two (47 per cent) admit they simply keep going because they're desperate to reach their destination faster. But 13 per cent have had a near miss after once fatigue set in, and six per cent have been involved in a crash due to drowsiness. The research was commissioned by GRIDSERVE to encourage drivers to pause and relax during their drives this summer. The findings also found those driving electric cars are the most clued up on the guidelines from the Highway Code - as 63 per cent are aware of the 15-minute break suggestion. Whereas 46 per cent of petrol drivers and 44 per cent of diesel motorists knew this. Daniel Kunkel, CEO of the EV charging company, added: "We want everyone to enjoy their journey safely, and it's promising to see that EV drivers are leading the way when it comes to taking adequate breaks. "EV drivers' natural stopping patterns help avoid the dangers that come with the lack of breaks taken. "Taking breaks along road journeys doesn't have to feel like a chore. "There are various facilities available alongside motorways, with access to food, drinks, and entertainment. Drivers targeted with toll fine text message after cruising on highways - but three words reveal red flag "Our forecourts offer a place for all drivers to not only recharge their vehicles but also themselves." But overall, 36 per cent don't see the point in stopping unless they actually feel tired, while 34 per cent are determined to finish their journey before it gets dark. With 55 per cent of motorists planning a long journey in the next month, 39 per cent would be more likely to take breaks if the stop-off points were a bit more relaxing. Scenic spots could do the trick for 34 per cent of those polled, via OnePoll, while a quarter long for peace and quiet with no noise at all. When it comes to enjoying their breaks from long drives, EV drivers appreciate these the most (30 per cent), compared to 19 per cent of petrol drivers and 14 per cent diesel drivers. Road safety expert, Graham Feest, said: "The two-hour mark is when fatigue can start to seriously impact concentration, reaction times, and awareness. "Even if you don't feel tired, your brain is working harder to stay focused, especially on long, monotonous stretches of road. "That creeping tiredness can lead to missed signs, slower responses, or even micro-sleeps behind the wheel. "A short 15-minute stop is the sweet spot, as it gives your mind and body enough time to reset without breaking the flow of your journey. "Stretching your legs, getting some fresh air, or having a quick snack or drink can make all the difference. It's not just about comfort, it's about arriving safely."

More than 150,000 vehicles per day are reported to rely on the Dartford Crossing. It has been considered a vital cross that enables vehicles to commute or carry freight between the south-east and the rest of the country. It is the only way to cross the Thames river by road east of London, and links the counties of Essex and Kent. This is via the QEII bridge for southbound traffic, and two 1.4km-long tunnels for travellers going northbound. The closures will only occur overnight across the week, where driver's may be hit by disruptions. Diversions via the National Highways' network and local routes will be clearly signposted during this time. The QEII bridge will be fully closed from Saturday, August 16 to Sunday, August 17, between 10pm to 5am. The diversion route will be through the an installed contraflow through the Dartford east tunnel from 9:30pm on Saturday night. This will mark the first price increase for the crossing since 2014. Transport Secretary, Lilian Greenwood, explained the toll increase was necessary in order to manage the almost 200,000 vehicles that use it everyday. Analysts have suggested that these increased charges could be used to fund the upcoming Lower Thames Crossing mega project. The project is set to ease congestion, and provide an alternative route for vehicles between Essex and Kent.
