Johan Ackermann gets Bulls top job
The former Springbok lock and three-time South African Coach of the Year joins the Pretoria-based franchise after a coaching stint with the Junior Springboks during the ongoing World Rugby U20 Championship.
Ackermann, 54, returns to Loftus Versfeld with a strong coaching résumé that includes domestic, international, and overseas experience. He replaces Jake White as head coach and will formally begin his role following the U20 final in Italy.
Speaking from Italy, where he is assisting the SA U20 team, Ackermann described the Bulls job as a significant moment in his coaching career.
'The moment I received the call, I got goosebumps. It's a privilege and an honour to coach a team with such tradition and passionate supporters,' he said. 'The Bulls are already in a strong position; my focus is on building on that and helping them grow further.'
Willem Strauss, president of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, said Ackermann's ties to the Bulls and his coaching credentials made him the ideal candidate.
'Johan's blood is blue,' said Strauss. 'He played for the Bulls, made his Test debut at Loftus, and is a Carlton League legend. His management of people and ability to build team culture are well known.'
Blue Bulls Company CEO Edgar Rathbone said the appointment aligns with the franchise's long-term goals.
'Johan Ackermann is a proven leader and developer of talent. His coaching track record speaks for itself. He's someone who understands the values of this union and can build on the foundations already in place,' said Rathbone.
Ackermann made 13 Test appearances for South Africa between 1996 and 2007, and became the oldest Springbok debutant at age 37. After retiring from playing in 2008, he began his coaching career with the Lions, where he progressed from forwards coach to head coach in 2013.
During his tenure, the Lions reached consecutive Super Rugby finals and established a high-tempo, structured playing style. Ackermann also coached the South Africa 'A' side in 2016 and 2017.
He then spent three years coaching Gloucester Rugby in England, guiding the club to a European Challenge Cup final and an English Premiership semi-final. More recently, he worked in Japan with NTT DoCoMo Red Hurricanes and Urayasu D-Rocks.
Ackermann returned to South African rugby in early 2025 as part of the Junior Springbok management team and has been involved in their campaign at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy.

'I've always done it, but now you see a club like AmaZulu doing the same — they've gone in that direction with players who have speed and explosiveness. You'll see the same at Durban City, with younger squads becoming the norm for one reason or another.' 'You must never be scared to play young players because they'll always improve. Coetzé claims shock gold in 100m backstroke with record-breaking finish

Photo: Backpagepix The 21-year-old Tuks student clocked a blistering 51.85 seconds — dipping under 52 seconds for the second time in just two weeks — to out-touch Olympic champion Thomas Ceccon of Italy, who took silver in 51.90, and France's Yohann Ndoye-Brouard, who claimed bronze in 51.95. Pieter Coetzé stormed to a surprise gold medal in the men's 100m backstroke final at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore on Monday, breaking his own South African and African record for the third time in rapid succession. Coetzé had arrived in Singapore carrying the world lead, courtesy of his 51.99 performance at the World Student Games in Germany last week — a swim that also set African and World Student Games records, and made him only the eighth man in history to break the 52-second barrier in the event. Despite this form, the South African was not seen as a favourite for the title in a stacked final field. He had qualified third-fastest (52.29) behind Hungary's Hubert Kós (52.21) and Russia's Kliment Kolesnikov, who posted a stunning 51.26 in the semis. In the final, the leading swimmers were level with 25 metres to go, before Coetzé unleashed a devastating late surge, kicking strongly in the final 10 metres to touch first in a remarkably close finish, with all three medallists under 52 seconds. Meanwhile, fellow South African Chris Smith booked his place in the men's 50m breaststroke final with a strong swim in the semi-finals. He finished second in his heat in a time of 26.77 seconds, behind Koen de Groot of the Netherlands. The final is scheduled for Wednesday.

FIFA ask Kaizer Chiefs to pay R3 million?
It seems like FIFA will advise Kaizer Chiefs to pay R1.5 million each in development compensation for Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman, the two promising players developed by Cape Town Spurs, according to FIFA regulations. FIFA's development compensation framework requires clubs to compensate those responsible for a player's training between the ages of 12 and 21, particularly when the player signs their first professional contract or moves clubs before turning 23.
