SPCA intervenes after inhumane transport of SHEEP
In the first instance, a trailer was dangerously overloaded with seven sheep, their legs tightly bound, piled on top of one another.
In the second instance, another trailer carried four sheep, also with legs bound – one with a severe, burst, and infected eye injury. The stench was reported to be overwhelming.
Both trailers were in direct violation of the Animals Protection Act, and one driver – who was unlicensed, along with the trailer – was fined by Law Enforcement.
The sheep were seized by the inspectors and are now in the safe care of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.
All of the animals were destined for religious slaughter, but cruelty is never justified, no matter the context.
According to the SPCA, transporting animals must comply with the SANS 1488:2014 'Humane Transportation of Livestock by Road', which requires: No overloading of trailers
Non-slip flooring to prevent injury
Vehicles suitable for the species
Proper railings and loading ramps
No tethering of animals
Separate transport for different species
Horned and dehorned animals must be transported separately
As per the SPCA, it has a legal and moral duty to act – and we will continue to do so. No animal deserves to suffer.

Bolt demands justice following Soweto driver's murder
E-hailing company Bolt has confirmed that some of the drivers affected by the alleged taxi violence in Soweto are operating on its platform. This comes after one person was shot and killed, and two others were injured when their vehicles were set alight at Maponya Mall in Soweto on Wednesday, 13 August. The attack has sparked outrage across the country, with Bolt condemning the violence in the strongest terms. Senior General Manager of Bolt South Africa, Lerato Mostoeneng, expressed sadness over the incident. Mostoeneng said it is appalling that anyone should lose their life for trying to earn an honest living. 'Our hearts go out to the driver's family, friends, and all those affected by this senseless act of violence. We condemn these attacks in the strongest terms and call for urgent action from law enforcement to ensure the safety of all e-hailing drivers operating in South Africa,' said Mostoeneng. Bolt said driver safety remains a top priority and that it has reached out to drivers in the affected areas to offer support and guidance. The company is also engaging with authorities to strengthen protection measures in known high-risk zones. Police are investigating a case of murder, two cases of attempted murder, and arson. According to a police report, four men approached a driver, shot him, and then torched the vehicle. The attackers also shot another driver, who managed to escape. Outrage as one of Thorisho Themane's killers applies for parole POLOKWANE – The family of the late Thorisho Themane has vowed to oppose the parole application of Kgothatso Teffo, one of the juveniles convicted of his murder. Read more: 10 years behind bars for each teen in Thorisho Themane murder Teffo, currently held at a juvenile correctional facility in Vhembe, applied for parole instead of transitioning to an adult prison as expected when he turns 21 later this year. The Themane family was invited to a meeting in July by a social worker overseeing the parole process in what is a standard step that includes notifying victims or their families. Thorisho, a student and musician, was killed in 2019 in Fauna Park by a group of four teenagers and two adults. The brutal assault was captured on video and widely shared on social media, sparking national outrage. In 2022, Teffo, along with Raofa Mahloromela Vincent Mothomela, Tshiamo Miyeni, and Lesetja Kabelo Ramokgopa, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for murder. The Limpopo High Court ruled that Teffo should serve three years in a juvenile facility before transfer to an adult prison. Miyeni and Mothomela were each to serve two years in juvenile detention, and Ramokgopa one year, before similar transfers. Karabo Themane, Thorisho's brother, said the petition will first be submitted to the social worker handling the case. If that fails, they plan to continue gathering signatures and present them to the parole board. Under South African law, juvenile parole applies to offenders aged 10–18, with those aged 14 and above having full criminal capacity. Provisions can extend to offenders up to 21 who committed their crimes while under 18, and parole may be considered after as little as three years of a 10-year sentence. 'Justice has not been adequately served,' Karabo said on behalf of the family. 'While our family continues to live with this irreversible loss, those responsible are being afforded leniency we find incomprehensible. We call upon the justice system to remain resolute and ensure that the sentence handed down is enforced in its entirety.'
