Ross Doohan reveals Kieran Tierney Celtic transfer message
As the left-back put it himself, there was an air of 'getting the band back together' when Ross Doohan re-joined Celtic this week.
The goalkeeper, 27, put pen to paper on a three-year deal this week as he sealed a return to his boyhood club.
The goalkeeper was a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Aberdeen, where he signed after a spell south of the border.
The recent full Scotland debutant – who came to Steve Clarke's rescue after injuries suffered by Angus Gunn and Robby McCrorie in the international double-header at the start of the month – will compete alongside Viljami Sinisalo to be back-up to the undisputed Celtic first-choice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
With Scott Bain away, Doohan essentially takes his place in the squad, helping with the club's home-grown quota for the Champions League.
Doohan knows Tierney's return from Arsenal is the headline news among supporters. But he's determined to prove his worth after coming back to the club he loves following three years away from Celtic Park.
'I've had a few conversations with him, but I worked under him before, so he knows what he's getting from me and I'm looking forward to working under him again because he's a top, top manager,' the keeper explained before addressing his relationship with Tierney.
'KT was a year older than me growing up in the youth teams, but we obviously played together a lot.
'You obviously know the type of player KT is, what he's like and the type of person he's like, so it's another great addition to the squad.
'I spoke to him when I went away on Scotland duty, so we were both there together when I got the late call.
'He was there chatting, but I've known KT for years now, so I was just looking forward to getting back to it. I think he said to me when I saw him it was about getting the band back together.
'He said that to me when I saw him so it's obviously great coming back and then me and him in the same situation, leaving a few years then later both coming back.
'We've always had a good relationship. We spoke a lot, although, in the last few years, maybe not as much. But every time we see each other, we chat away and always had the conversation.
'I've got the relationship with Tony [Ralston} because he was in the same youth squad as me from 13, so we went right through it together. We're pretty close.
'One of my loan spells was at Ayr, so me and Luke [McCowan] played together for quite a bit. We played together for two seasons, so I still keep in contact with him, so it's good to come back to a good few familiar faces.'
Doohan never managed to play a senior game for Celtic alongside Tierney, so, he is hoping to do so in his second spell at the club. They featured heavily in the Under-17s, 19s and 20s during their academy days.
If he's to do so, the chances are he'll require either, a loss or form from Schmeichel, or to take advantage of someone else's misfortune on the injury front.
Doohan was part of a tight-knit goalkeeper network at Lennoxtown before. He would have worked closely with Fraser Forster, Joe Hart and Craig Gordon in the past. So, he's fully aware of the standards set within the squad he's arriving into.
He said: 'I'm buzzing about working with him because you've seen the level Kasper's played at.
'To go in and train day in, day out with him, can only put myself in good stead and to try and pick up wee traits of his that could maybe benefit my game and put me, maybe step me on and make me that bit better. It's the same with working with Vil.
'Obviously he came in and played a few games towards the end of last season. You've seen the level he's at, but I feel like any place I go, the goalkeepers I work with, I just try and pick up bits and pieces from them and add them into my game.
'I'm just buzzing about working with Woodsy [Stevie Woods] because they're top goalie coaches and even with Colin Meldrum as well, the youth goalie coach that I had here. I just can't wait to get going.
'Kasper's all-round game is great. The calmness he's got with it. But like you said, with the ball at his feet, he's different level, I think.
'So I'll just try and pick up bits and pieces from every part of his game and try and implement it into mine if it can make me a better keeper. I'm looking forward to that.'
Doohan signed permanently for Forest Green Rovers when he departed Celtic in 2022. Here, he played under Duncan Ferguson, during the former Scotland, Dundee United and Rangers striker's brief stint in charge.
While it didn't go to plan for Ferguson, Doohan was grateful for the experience of working with him.
'Big Dunc is a great guy,' he added. 'The time at Forest Green, we didn't do too great, but you could see what he was like as a guy and that. He was brand new, so there's not too much complaints there working under him.
'He came in maybe two weeks after I joined. Everyone's got their reputation, but you only get to see it at face value when you actually meet them.
'The times I spoke to him, he was brand new. Obviously, I was down there, a bit away from home, but he always helped and asked if I was all right, chatted away. I've not got a bad word to say about him.
'There were a few Scottish people there. There was a wee group of us there, so you could say that as well. When he came in, working under him, it was an experience.
'It was good and something that's landed me in good stead coming through. I feel every club I've been at, every experience I've had, has led me to where I am now. I wouldn't change anything for the world.'

'Special' Liverpool star who left Jurgen Klopp speechless could unlock £50m deal
With Liverpool and Arne Slot reportedly in hot pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, young winger Ben Doak, who once wowed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, could play catalyst Liverpool could offer youngster Ben Doak to Crystal Palace in their bid to recruit £50million defender Marc Guehi, it's been claimed. The 19-year-old was once lauded by former boss Jurgen Klopp, who branded him a special talent The Reds are yet to put their wallet away in the transfer market, having already secured the services of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen as well as left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for a combined £186m. Now, attention has turned to another defensive reinforcement in light of centre-back Jarrell Quansah's expected departure, and England star Guehi is high on the club's list. It is alleged that the 24-year-old would cost the Reds around £50m, but to reduce that cash sum, new reports suggest young Scottish winger Doak, who has received glowing praise from Anfield royalty in the past, may be thrown into a swap deal for Guehi. The Sun claim that the 19-year-old is valued at £25m by Liverpool, and the club will attempt to use him to entice Palace to part with Guehi this window. The defender is out of contract in 2026. Doak first burst onto the scene in 2021 as a Celtic youth prospect, making his debut in a Scottish Premiership win against Dundee United that year. He was signed by the Reds in 2022 for around £600,000 and made his Liverpool bow in an EFL Cup tie against Derby County. Doak rapidly progressed through the club's U18 set-up, scoring on his first start for them, and quickly became too good even for the U21 side. Under Klopp, Doak impressed, and the German manager hailed his impact. In a 4-2 friendly win against German side Karlsruher in July 2023, Klopp was lost for words when describing Doak, saying: "Ben Doak, oh my God, it's much fun to watch these kids." Later that year, Klopp was asked about some of his squad's youngsters, and he said: "Ben Doak, obviously nice signs, he's with us in training again. Special boy, really confident, has something nobody else delivers, really. "This kind of dribbling, this kind of straight-forward bravery, all these kind of things. Technically, really good, high speed, super-promising, but very young." The following year, Doak, who was recovering from a knee injury, was called up to Steve Clarke's provisional Scotland squad for Euro 2024 and received a seal of approval from ex-Liverpool ace Danny Murphy. "He is a super quick, explosive winger," Murphy told talkSPORT. "I don't know where he is at fitness-wise, but he gives you something so different because of his pace. He's got amazing, explosive pace, which could cause teams problems off the bench." However, Doak failed to make the final squad due to his ailment and was sent on loan to Middlesbrough over the summer. He scored three times in the Championship this season and registered seven assists. Though he is evidently held in incredibly high regard, Doak's exit could now enable the Merseyside arrival of Guehi, as the Reds gear up for a top-flight title defence.

Arsenal handed huge Nico Williams transfer boost after 'saying yes' to move
Arsenal may be able to find their way back into the Nico Williams transfer race after the Spaniard's move to Barcelona hit a stumbling block after an agreement was made Nico Williams has seen his move to Barcelona stall, despite terms appearing to be agreed for the switch. A verbal agreement was said to be in place between player and club as the Catalan side attempt to claim his signature for the second summer in succession. Last year, Williams opted to remain with Athletic Bilbao despite Barcelona's interest but now appears keen to make the move to Camp Nou. The Arsenal target has told his current club that he wants to leave to join the La Liga champions in the summer transfer window. While the deal was looking set to be sewn up in a straightforward fashion, reports in Spain now suggest negotiations have stalled. The standstill is said to be as a result of 'high demands' from the star's agent emerging as a surprise when the contract paperwork started to be drawn up. But the point of contention raised appears to be that Williams wants a guarantee over his registration. Last year, Barca were unable to register new signing Dani Olmo in their squad until January due to La Liga's financial rules. For now, the club are claimed to find the request unreasonable after the condition was not part of the original talks. Williams does not want to suffer the same fate as his international team-mate however. Hansi Flick's side are claimed to have provided assurances that they will be able to register him for the start of the season. That has not proven convincing enough it seems. Barca, while there is the opportunity to pay Williams' release clause, are also looked upon less favourably by Athletic Bilbao. The Basque side are pressuring the league to remain vigilant over Barcelona's registration capacity and have criticised their rivals over their public courting of WIlliams. The combination of scenarios could just leave a door open for other interested suitors in Arsenal and Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga giants are still hoping to sign the 22-year-old despite his preference for Barcelona. They are said to have no problem paying his €58 million (£49.6m) release clause plus the corresponding CPI , which would see the package read €62m (£53m). Bilbao would be happier seeing the charge depart to Bayern over Barcelona. Speaking about a potential deal for Williams, Barcelona sporting director Deco said: "We need to strengthen in this position. "As wingers, we only really have Lamine [Yamal] and Raphinha. From there, there are names coming out and it will come down to price and quality. "Nico was there last year but for me, at that time, Dani Olmo was the priority. Now. the same as with other players, Nico is showing a strong desire to come ... And if the right conditions are met in his case, we'll definitely try to complete the deal. "There's a process with any signing: speaking with agents, clubs, knowing the contractual situation ... Nico's case it clear because he has a release clause. We've met with his agent to see what he wants and we will see if it's possible." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Jonny Evans announces retirement and takes up new Manchester United role
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has been handed the task of helping to progress the careers of the club's young players after confirming his retirement as a player. The 37-year-old, who won the Champions League, three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his two stints at Old Trafford, has been appointed head of loans and pathways. Evans' role will see him work closely with director of football Jason Wilcox and the director of academy to ease developing talent into the first team. He told the club's official website: 'I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead. 'I'll be forever indebted to the managers, coaches, staff and, of course, my team-mates, that I have had the privilege of working alongside throughout my 20 years in professional football. 'My biggest and most heartfelt thanks must go to the fans who have supported me during every step of the journey. It's been an honour to be on the pitch and feel your passion home and away; I will be eternally grateful for every ounce of support. 'I am looking forward to working with the next generation of talented players to support them to reach their potential. Having had experience of loans myself, I know the crucial role that they can play within a player's development. 'I am excited to help further develop the pathway to our first team and continue the legacy of young players thriving at Manchester United.' Evans, who won 107 caps for Northern Ireland and was awarded an MBE for his services to football in 2023, emerged from United's academy to make 241 senior appearances for the club. He also had stints at West Brom and Leicester, with whom he tasted FA Cup success for the second time in 2021, and significantly had two loan spells at Sunderland under former Red Devils skipper Roy Keane early in a career which amounted to 536 games. His playing days effectively came to an end as last season drew to a close and, while he is close to completing his UEFA A licence, he insisted earlier this summer that he was in no rush to make a decision over his future. However now his contract at Old Trafford has formally expired, he is ready to launch the latest phase of his illustrious career. Welcoming Evans' appointment, Wilcox said: 'Having just finished his exceptional playing career, Jonny is the perfect role model for our young players. 'Jonny's knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be of great benefit to each of them as we continue to develop world-class talent capable of performing in our first team.'
