South Shields padel site to replace existing tennis courts

BBC News10-07-2025
New padel tennis courts will be created at a sports club in what developers hope will help to "reduce childhood obesity", according to approved plans.South Tyneside Council has given the go ahead for "five illuminated padel courts" to replace half of the South Shields Tennis Club, also known as Westoe Lawn Tennis Club, off Dean Road in South Shields.Padel Project UK Ltd will install the hard courts on the north of site, with the remainder continuing its current use for caravan parking.Under planning conditions, the development must be brought forward within three years.
Padel is a type of tennis played with specialist balls and rackets in a small enclosed court, where walls are part of the court and can be used in play. The new site will include space for the "rapidly growing sport" and feature playing cages, a reception and storage area and changing facilities, plans seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.Council planners said the proposal would "support healthy lifestyles", with supporters saying the development is an "excellent idea for South Shields" and would "encourage youngsters to get into the sport".
One objection raised concerns about potential light pollution from floodlights impacting properties in nearby Hartington Terrace. However, the council concluded the development would have "no harm upon the character of the wider conservation area given the site specific circumstances" and that lights would be "constructed in a similar location to previous floodlights located at the tennis courts".Padel Project UK Ltd said the site will be for children and adults and they plan to work with the local council and rugby club to target specific groups in need of access to sports.

Man United set to host fans at Old Trafford for away game screenings in 'pub-like' venue - and this is how much it will cost

Manchester United are opening their doors to fans for away game screenings at Old Trafford this season. The new scheme, which will cost fans £25 per match, will see supporters unable to land away match tickets the chance to watch United from the international suite at Old Trafford. In what has been described by insiders as a pub-like atmosphere, the suite will be decked out with big screens showing the games, as well as a bar and hot food. The £25 admission includes one free drink as well as a portion of food in what sources feel represents a value-for-money experience. Season ticket holders now have the chance to buy tickets to stadium screenings of the first three away games of the season, at Fulham, at Manchester City, and at Brentford. United have one of the most in-demand away tickets and demand to go continues to be at an all-time high despite the disappointment of results on the pitch. Insiders hope the screenings can help ease the demand and prove popular, particularly given that more fan protests are planned against the club's ownership for the forthcoming season, as Mail Sport first revealed. There has been friction with supporters just recently after it emerged that bosses were considering bringing in a controversial personal seat licence system (PSL) should they move to a new stadium, which would see fans charged up to £4,000 simply for the right to buy a season ticket. That prospect triggered anger among large sections of the fanbase, who have already launched a series of protests against the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos group. Mail Sport revealed plans are in place for further, large-scale demonstrations in a move which may come as a blow to United officials hoping to build on the optimism triggered by the arrivals of summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo and some encouraging performances from Ruben Amorim's men on their US tours they seek to improve on last season's 15th-placed finish. Supporters' group The 1958 claim the introduction of PSLs – which United are adamant has only been explored hypothetically – would 'force out supporters who have followed the club for decades' and represent 'another step towards the Americanisation of our game'. While United would be the first Premier League club to utilise such a system they are commonplace in the NFL. They also say the fact that US-based CSL International raised the prospect with fans during a consultation over the stadium 'shows just how out of touch our club and owners have become'.

WNBA commissioner opens up on Caitlin Clark... as league is rocked by protests and bullying claims

A couple of T-shirts have caught the eye of Cathy Engelbert in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the WNBA commissioner was playing golf near Lake Tahoe when she spotted someone wearing the colors of the Golden State Valkyries. They are only midway through their inaugural season, but next year Golden State is expected to be the WNBA's most valuable team, surpassing even the $400 million New York Liberty.

Louis Rees-Zammit has had ‘unbelievable' interest from rugby union teams

Former Wales winger Louis Rees-Zammit says he has had 'unbelievable' interest from clubs following his decision to return to rugby union. Rees-Zammit, 24, spent 18 months in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but did not feature for either franchise in a regular-season game. The former Gloucester wing, who made 32 appearances for Wales and toured with the British & Irish Lions in 2021, said he hopes to rekindle his international career. Rees-Zammit told Sky Sports News: 'I can't name teams, but I've had a load of interest, which is unbelievable. I'm very grateful for that. 'The season starts pretty soon. So it's about finding the right team for me in terms of location, in terms of how quick I've got to get into camp, and because the season's right around the corner, so all of these things that are going to happen, are going to happen pretty sharpish. 'Me and my brother are going through negotiations and seeing teams interested, which is amazing. We should find out in the next week or so.' Rees-Zammit quit rugby union in January 2024 in order to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL via its International Player Pathway Program. He signed an active roster deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2025 season after being part of their practice squad for the previous campaign and travelled to London for the games against the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots in October. Following his decision to return to the 15-man game, Rees-Zammit has targeted a return for Wales, who he helped to their last Six Nations triumph in 2021. He added: 'Playing for my country is the pinnacle and it's one that I absolutely love doing. 'I managed to play 32 times for my country in three, four years. I need to find a team. Once we find a team, get into good form and hopefully come Autumn Internationals, see where selection is. 'It's something that I'm really looking forward to and I really want to play for my country again.' Rees-Zammit's ambition will come as a welcome boost to recently-appointed Wales head coach Steve Tandy, who takes over a side that only ended an 18-match losing streak that lasted almost two years with a hard-fought win over Japan last month.
