DMDK to reconsider alliance after AIADMK defers Rajya Sabha seat
Premlatha Vijayakanth and Edappadi K Palaniswam (R)
NEW DELHI: The DMDK expressed dissatisfaction over AIADMK's decision to postpone the allocation of a Rajya Sabha seat to the party until 2026.
DMDK general secretary Premlatha Vijayakanth said her party would announce its alliance plans ahead of 2026 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, during a meeting in Cuddalore on January 9, 2026.
Without directly accusing the AIADMK of breaking promises made before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Premalatha pointed out that parties like the PMK and TMC were already given Rajya Sabha seats by the AIADMK and insisted it was now DMDK's turn.
She revealed that AIADMK had given a written commitment to allot five Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat to the DMDK during the 2024 elections.
However, when asked for a specific date, AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami reportedly said that such letters typically don't mention the year.
AIADMK deputy general secretary K P Munusamy confirmed on June 1 that the DMDK remains part of the AIADMK-led alliance and would be given a Rajya Sabha seat in 2026.
Palaniswami also played down the rift, saying the alliance was intact and attempts to break it would fail. The reassurance came a day after DMDK treasurer L K Sudheesh met Palaniswami to discuss the Rajya Sabha polls.
Premalatha said politics was closely tied to elections and that her party would also act in its own interests for the 2026 Assembly polls. She announced that DMDK would soon appoint election in-charges for all 234 Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu and begin preparations.
She also thanked chief minister M K Stalin and the DMK for passing a resolution in their general council meeting in Madurai on June 1, honouring DMDK founder and late leader 'Captain' Vijayakanth.

BJP's CR Kesavan slams Rahul Gandhi, calls Congress party of
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan launched a blistering attack on Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, accusing him of cowardice and hypocrisy. He alleged that Congress has a legacy of appeasement and weak leadership. Responding to Rahul Gandhi's recent comments critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kesavan said, 'The Congress party, ever since Nehru's days, has been hyphenated with cowardice. Rahul Gandhi says don't be afraid, but he himself is afraid to release the contents of 51 cartons of letters written by Jawaharlal Nehru, which rightfully belong to the nation.' Questioning Gandhi's transparency and courage, Kesavan challenged him to make the letters public. 'Why is Rahul Gandhi being a coward and not disclosing what's in those letters? If he wants to talk about courage, he should revisit the 1923 Naba incident, where his great-grandfather Nehru admitted in his autobiography that he had deserted his colleagues and behaved like a coward,' Kesavan said. Taking a swipe at the Congress leader's international image, the BJP spokesperson cited former US President Barack Obama's autobiography, in which Obama allegedly described Rahul Gandhi as 'nervous' and having 'an unformed quality.' He also criticized the Congress-led UPA government's response to the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. 'Obama clearly says that the Manmohan Singh government resisted attempts to retaliate against Pakistan because the Congress party was afraid of anti-Muslim sentiment in the wake of the 26-11 attacks. Look at the cowardice of the Congress party and their appeasement politics.' Referring to recent military operations, Kesavan said Gandhi's remarks insulted the armed forces. 'Rahul Gandhi, with his statements and his bitterness for the Prime Minister, has only further insulted our armed forces and their courage, and he has also discredited Operation Sindhu. But regardless of what doomsday and naysayers like Rahul Gandhi may state, the entire world is lauding Operation Sindoor for striking a decisive blow at the root of global terrorism. Operation Sindoor and the valour of our armed forces under the leadership of Narendra Modi ji will be written in the golden letters of India's history,' he said. His remarks come in the wake of Rahul Gandhi's recent attack on the BJP-led government over alleged US mediation. Addressing Congress workers in Bhopal, Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Modi 'surrendered' after receiving a call from US President Donald Trump. He contrasted Modi's reaction with former PM Indira Gandhi's stance during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. He also attacked the BJP-RSS, alleging that if slight pressure is exerted on them, 'they run away out of fear.' 'Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. If slight pressure is put on them, they run away out of fear. When Trump called Modiji-'Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, Seventh Fleet (came from the US), Indira Gandhi said I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference.' Rahul Gandhi also attacked the BJP-led government in a post on X. 'Since the Independence movement, they have this habit of writing letters of surrender.' 'Trump's phone came and Narendraji immediately surrendered. History is witness, this is the character of BJP-RSS, they always budge. India had bifurcated Pakistan in 1971 despite the threat by the United States,' Rahul Gandhi said in his post. 'The 'babbar sher' and 'shernis' of Congress fight the Superpowers, they do not bow,' he added. US President Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for stopping hostilities between India and Pakistan after New Delhi's effective response to Islamabad's aggression following precision strikes on terror infrastructure. India had conducted Operation Sindoor early on May 7 and hit terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoJK in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. India effectively responded to subsequent Pakistan aggression and pounded its airbases. India and Pakistan agreed to stop military action following a call made by Pakistan's DGMO to his Indian counterpart. (ANI)

PM Modi increased Kerala's railway budget to Rs 3,042 crore: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government has increased Kerala's railway budget from an average of Rs 372 Crore (2009-14) to Rs 3,042 crore in the financial year 2025-26, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Tuesday. 'PM Narendra Modi Ji has increased Kerala's railway budget from an average Rs372 Cr (2009-14) to Rs3,042 Cr in FY 2025-26. We are working on 3rd and 4th line from North to South Kerala, so that both passengers and cargo can move by rail,' Vaishnaw said in a post X. Vaishnaw said that he discussed key projects with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and sought his support for land acquisition, especially for Angamaly-Erumeli railway project and Road Over Bridges (ROB) and Road Under Bridges (RUB) being sanctioned. The Angamaly-Erumeli railway project, also known as Sabari rail project was first proposed in the Railway Budget of 1997-98. The land acquisition for the project was completed too. The Kerala CM has earlier said that the expansion of the Sabari rail project would provide a significant boost to Kerala's development, while also suggesting that it could be extended in the future to connect Vizhinjam. In December, an official statement from the Kerala CM's office said that the project would be implemented in two phases with an expanded approach, with the state government requesting the Centre's approval, and 50 per cent of the cost of the project will be borne by the state government. The section's plan included the construction of two flyovers and two underpasses. However, land acquisition notifications have now been issued for the next 70 km. A letter from the Railways dated 26.09.2019 informed the state government that the project had been frozen, leading to a halt in further construction activities, including the flyovers. Although the project initially began with full funding from the Railways, on January 7, 2021, the Kerala Government conveyed to the Central Government its readiness to bear 50 per cent of the project cost, then estimated at Rs 2,815 crore, through Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). BJP's Pradeep Bhandari slams Rahul Gandhi over remarks on PM Modi, says,
Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], June 3 (ANI): BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari launched a fierce attack on Congress MP and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday, accusing him of making 'indecent' remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and questioning his values and patriotism. Bhandari also alleged that the Congress leader's actions, including offering tributes to former PM Indira Gandhi without removing his shoes, reflect a disregard for Indian traditions and respect. 'Rahul Gandhi's words reflect his values. He makes such indecent remarks against the country's Prime Minister. But this is what can be expected from Rahul Gandhi, whose heart beats for Pakistan. Because when he offers floral tributes to the statue of his grandmother (Indira Gandhi), he does not even remove his shoes...' Bhandari said. The BJP leader also highlighted India's firm stance on terrorism under the Modi government. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has given a befitting reply to Pakistan's terror masters. Even Salman Khurshid to Shashi Tharoor, every Congress leader is talking about this, and Pakistan itself is giving evidence of this... The people of the country see this uncivilised Rahul Gandhi as an agent of Pakistan...' he said. His remarks come in the wake of Rahul Gandhi's recent attack on the BJP-led government over alleged US mediation in Operation Sindoor. Since the Independence movement, they have this habit of writing letters of surrender,' Rahul Gandhi said. Rahul Gandhi also attacked the BJP-led government in a post on X.
