A second child with autism drowned in a Cincinnati pond in under a year. Now parents want answers
Parents are looking for answers after a second child with autism drowned in a Cincinnati pond in less than a year.
Six-year-old Joshua Al-Lateef drowned in a pond at his family's West Chester apartment complex in November. Months later, seven-year-old Mar'Dasia Forte drowned in a pond at her family's West Chester apartment complex on June 13.
The moms of both autistic children and the local advocacy group EmPath For Autism want their local lawmakers to do something about the drownings.
Governor Mike DeWine told The Enquirer the state government 'should look' at requiring fences around retention ponds. But Mar'Dasia's mom, Mika Forte, told the publication, 'I need more than looking.'
'We can't keep losing children like this,' she said.
The Enquirer reported, citing the National Autism Association, that a record number of at least 77 children with autism drowned last year. So far, at least 32 have drowned this year, according to the organization.
Mar'Dasia was a 'very happy, active, rambunctious little lady,' her mom said.
She had wandered away from home in the past, so Forte installed special locks on the door and got her daughter a bed she couldn't climb out of, but the little girl still managed to get out of the apartment.
"This should've stopped after the first [death],' Forte said, adding, "We have to do better."
Jonisa Cook, Joshua's mother, told The Enquirer she 'cried and cried' after hearing about Mar'Dasia's drowning.
Cook said Joshua was 'lovable and his smile was everything,' in a previous interview with The Enquirer.
Joshua had also wandered away from his home and drowned. He was found one day after he was reported missing, with hundreds of community members volunteering to search for him.
After Mar'Dasia's death, Cook said she's feeling more determined than ever to advocate for fences around retention ponds as well as an alert system for missing children with autism.

Disturbing new images from Diddy's home show cache of guns, bullets, and mountains of baby oil
More photos of damning evidence against Sean ' Diddy ' Combs came to light on Thursday, including a collection of high-powered rifles, drugs and hundreds of bottles of baby oil. The trove of photos were released by federal prosecutors as the trial at Manhattan federal court was stalled due to the Juneteenth holiday. The items were collected by Homeland Security officials during the March 2024 raid at the disgraced Bad Boy mogul's mansion in the exclusive Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles. Investigators also found bags containing ketamine, which were also photographed as evidence. Last week, Homeland Security Investigations agent Andre Lamon testified he saw an overwhelming amount of both baby oil and lubricant when he and other agents searched the mansion. The pictures show bottles of baby oil neatly lined in display cabinets, while dozen of boxes of the lubricant were also found stacked in the home. Lamon testified he found 900 bottles of Astroglide and 200 bottles of baby oil at Combs' LA home. Investigators also found bags containing ketamine, which were also photographed as evidence. Combs has pleaded not guilty to charges that he coerced and abused women for years, aided by associates and employees Federal prosecutors allege the drugs were used in marathon 'freak offs' Combs, his ex-girlfriends and male escorts participated in. Defense Attorney Marc Agnifilo has said the star likes to 'buy in bulk like any other American' and claimed Combs participated in consensual sex. One of the pictures showed a cache of weapons, including AR-15 style rifles and pump shotguns, next to a bag of tortilla chips. Combs' has since placed his LA mansion up for sale at $61.5 million. The 17,000-square-foot home that boasts 10 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms is still listed for sale as of Thursday. Authorities also executed search warrants at Comb's Miami mansion on the exclusive Star Island the same day. Armed agents entered luxury properties on both East and West coasts, with video footage showing helicopters circling overhead. This week, jurors also viewed several video recordings of the alleged freak offs with male escorts. Combs also was allowed to view the video evidence, but the public were not. The Bad Boy founder was seen licking his lips after watching the freak off videos from a side room of the courtroom. Damien Williams, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, alleged Diddy used 'embarrassing and sensitive recordings' he made of the freak offs 'as collateral' against the victims. 'He maintained control over the victims in several ways, including by giving them drugs, by giving and threatening to take away financial support or housing, by promising them career opportunities, by monitoring their whereabouts and even by dictating their physical appearance,' Williams said during a September 2024 press conference. Combs faces decades in prison and has been charged with sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty on all counts. Combs' former girlfriend, who has testified under the pseudonym 'Jane', also testified about the hip hop mogul's obsession with 'cuckold' scenarios. She said the role playing may have been a way for Combs to live out his bisexual fantasies without physically engaging with men — because he was 'too ashamed' to do so openly. Jane said the freak offs she attended during their relationship as filled with extravagant sexual role play where participants gave each other nicknames inspired by legendary basketball stars. Combs allegedly casted himself as Michael Jordan, his ex-girlfriend as Kobe Bryant and a male escort Jane regularly slept with as Shaquille O'Neal. The trial will resume on Friday.

'Deranged' protester runs GOP congressman off the road while chanting 'death to Israel'
A Republican congressman has claimed he was run off the road by an 'unhinged, deranged man' who displayed a Palestinian flag and chanted 'death to Israel.' Rep. Max Miller, of Ohio, took to social media on Thursday to share how he was attacked by an anti-Israeli protester while on his way to work in his district. 'As I was driving to work, some unhinged, deranged man decided to lay on his horn and run me off the road when he couldn't get my attention to show me a Palestinian flag,' said Miller, who previously worked as a White House aide in President Donald Trump 's first administration and now represents northeastern Ohio. 'Not to mention, "Death to Israel," death to me - that he wanted to kill me and my family,' Miller continued, speaking from inside his car. 'Thank God my daughter was not in my vehicle or anybody else at the time.' The Jewish congressman went on to say he had filed a report with the local police department and with the US Capitol Police. Rocky River Police Department has since confirmed to Fox News that it is investigating the incident. But Miller said in his video he already knows who the perpetrator was, and told the suspect that if he has 'an issue, take it to our office. 'You want to run me off the road, that's a different story,' Miller asserted. Despite the encounter, Miller - who also served as a reservist in the US Marines - said he remains undeterred. 'I will continue to fight against antisemitism, Islamophobia and all other forms of hate,' he declared. The congressman also added in an accompanying X post that: 'As a Marine, a proud Jewish American and a staunch defender of Israel, I will not hide in the face of this blatant antisemitic violence.' In a follow-up post, he thanked the local police departments in his district and the US Capitol Police for their assistance. 'A police report has been filed and when I am able to share the finalized report, I will do so immediately,' Miller vowed, adding: 'Hate has no home here in OH-7.' House Democratic leadership was quick to denounce the attack on Miller's vehicle. 'We condemn in the strongest possible terms the attack on Congressman Max Miller and his family, and are thankful they are safe,' Reps. Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar said in a statement. 'The rise in political violence in this country is unacceptable,' they continued, weeks after two Democratic Minnesota lawmakers were shot inside their homes. 'This is a moment of crisis that requires Congress to act decisively in order to ensure the safety of every single Member who serves in the People's House.'

Muslim NY mayoral candidate reports threats; Jewish Ohio lawmaker was threatened separately
WASHINGTON, June 19 (Reuters) - The New York City Police Department said on Thursday its hate crime unit was probing anti-Muslim threats against mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani while in another incident U.S. Representative Max Miller of Ohio said he was "run off the road" by another driver with a Palestinian flag. These marked the latest U.S. incidents to raise concerns about the rise in hate against Americans of Muslim, Arab, Jewish, Israeli and Palestinian heritage since the start of Israel's war in Gaza in late 2023. An NYPD spokesperson said police received reports that on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m., Mamdani, a Democratic state assembly member and mayoral candidate, reported that he "received four phone voicemails, on various dates, making threatening anti-Muslim statements by an unknown individual." There have not been any arrests so far and the investigation remained ongoing, the NYPD added. The New York Daily News reported a man threatened to blow up Mamdani's car. Mamdani had no immediate comment. Separately, Republican U.S. Representative Max Miller from Ohio said on X he was "run off the road" in the city of Rocky River on Thursday while he and his family were threatened by a person with a Palestinian flag. He said he had filed a police report. "Today I was run off the road in Rocky River, and the life of me and my family was threatened by a person who proceeded to show a Palestinian flag before taking off," said Miller, who is Jewish and pro-Israeli. He labeled the incident, which was also condemned by top congressional Democrats, as antisemitic. Recent incidents that raised alarm over antisemitism and anti-Israel attitudes in the U.S. include a fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy employees in Washington and a Colorado attack that left eight people wounded when a suspect threw incendiary devices into a pro-Israeli crowd. Incidents raising alarm about anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian prejudice include the fatal stabbing of a 6-year-old Palestinian child in Illinois, the attempted drowning of a 3-year-old Palestinian American girl in Texas and a violent mob attack on pro-Palestinian protesters in California.
