Social media hit Ilona Maher takes women's rugby onto new plane
Now the stage is set at the women's World Cup in England for the American to spark even more interest.
The 29-year-old phenomenon has attracted over eight million followers on social media, not only through her sporting exploits but also for her promotion of body positivity.
She played a pivotal role in the USA women's team winning a first ever Olympic medal, beating Australia in the third-place playoff in Paris last year.
On the back of that achievement, Maher featured in Sports Illustrated's swimsuit edition and appeared in the US version of hit TV show "Dancing with the Stars", finishing runner-up.
The Maher-fuelled improvement of the USA team attracted the attention of American investor Michele Kang who donated $4 million to help develop the USA Women's Rugby Sevens Team over four years.
In another sport, Kang owns the Lyon women's football team, the eight-time European champions.
Maher's days in Paris were not just spent playing rugby but also attracting even more followers with her pithy social media posts.
She compared life in the Athletes' Village to a reality TV show, in one humorous posting saying she was there "looking for love", to which her friend replies: "No you are here to play rugby."
In more reflective mode in Paris, she told the Bleacher Report one of her goals was trying to reassure "girls" that playing sport did not take away their "girliness".
"What we're trying to show is the beauty that in sports you can be a badass on the field, you can be a beast on the field, but also be a beauty," she said.
"It's really important for me because I want girls to see what their body is capable of.
"It's not just to be looked at, objectified, but it's strong and it's fast, and it's brilliant."
Maher, who through her body positivity push has become a brand ambassador for a deodorant and a skincare product she co-founded, revels in her global popularity and being "America's sweetheart."
"I love when people call me that because I feel like I'm maybe not the image you would have of a sweetheart in some sense of the word,' Maher told CNN in January this year.
"I'm honoured."
- 'Tone down' -
Maher, who hails from Vermont, may be extrovert and cheerful but she keeps her ego in check by showing appreciation to those women sports stars who paved the way for her.
Hamm, her fellow American and a groundbreaking football superstar of the 1990s and early noughties, a two-time Olympic and World Cup winner, features high on the list.
"I remember in our gym we always had a poster of Mia Hamm, and that was always cool to look up to her," Maher told the Bleacher Report.
Closer to home, though, she is part of a tight-knit family unit, with her father Michael, a keen rugby player who introduced her to the sport, Netherlands-born mum Mieneke and sisters Olivia and Adrianna.
Elder sister Olivia has a considerable social media presence herself.
From her father Ilona not only learned about rugby but also a crucial life lesson when he defended her at a softball event.
One of the other dads complained that Maher's pitches were unhittable but he was put in his place by Maher senior.
"I think that was the first moment of being told to never tone it down," she told CNN.
"Because that dad over there … wanted me to tone myself down so that it could be easier for (his daughter).
"But that's not the world, is it? The world isn't going to tone down for you."
Instead Maher has upped the ante and the fruits for women's rugby have been plentiful as New Zealand legend Portia Woodman-Wickliffe told AFP.
"Having someone from America with that American market who is very confident, loves rugby, loves supporting women's bodies, someone as vocal as that is amazing for us," Woodman-Wickliffe said.
"We need to capitalise and follow her as much as we can."

Ralph Lauren Reveals 2025 Ryder Cup Uniforms for U.S. Team
The competition is expected to be fierce this year when the U.S. and Europe bring their best golf players to Long Island, N.Y., at the end of September to battle head-to-head for the Ryder Cup. And in terms of fashion, it'll be Ralph Lauren versus Loro Piana, both longtime apparel partners of the tournament. More from WWD Leonard Lauren, a Former Vice President of Ralph Lauren and Ralph Lauren's Older Brother, Dies Ralph Lauren to Stage Spring 2026 Collection Show at 650 Madison Avenue Ralph Lauren's Polo Bear Stars in New Short Film On Monday, Ralph Lauren unveiled the uniforms it has created for its seventh run as the official outfitter of the U.S. team. The 45th Ryder Cup will be played at the Bethpage Black Golf Course, the first time the tournament has been played on Long Island and in the greater New York area, from Sept. 26 to 28. The company will provide both practice and on-the-course uniforms as well as outerwear and tailored clothing for the opening ceremony and welcome dinner. Ralph Lauren will also outfit all caddies, spouses and partners of the U.S. Team, including the U.S. team captain and Ralph Lauren Ryder Cup ambassador Keegan Bradley. Not surprisingly, the 2025 U.S. Team's on-course uniforms will feature a palette of red, white and blue in performance fabrics. There will be both layering and weather-resistant pieces including cashmere hoodies, technical vests, half-zips and wind-resistant jackets. Each garment will offer advanced moisture-wicking technology, technical stretch and breathable fabrications. 'It's the best of best of American style,' Bradley said. 'The classic American flag sweater piece is a classic and a favorite. I love the red, white and blue, of course. It's always exciting to be wearing the uniform as a team, which is so unique to the Ryder Cup. And even more exciting this year.' 'It is an extraordinary honor to outfit the U.S. Ryder Cup Team as they represent our country at the most exciting event in the world of golf,' added David Lauren, chief branding and innovation officer of Ralph Lauren. 'And with the tournament coming back to New York for the first time in decades, Bethpage is going to be explosive. Defining the look and style of the U.S. to match that energy, while honoring the timeless style and heritage of the game is what we set out to do. These are the best golfers in the world, and we want them to step onto the course — together — looking and feeling their absolute best.' For fans, the company is also producing a commemorative collection of men's and womenswear RLX apparel that will include a navy and red satin jacket featuring embroidered New York and golfing motifs and the brand's signature Polo Bear outfitted in the U.S. Team uniform standing before Bethpage Black's legendary course signs. There will also be novelty prints and graphics such as the 13th Man camp shirt — a printed statement piece that honors fans as the unofficial '13th player' on the team. The Ryder Cup collection will be sold on the brand's website, the Ryder Cup site, select golf clubs, resorts and stores, as well as Bloomingdale's. The Bethpage Golf Shop will also sell the RLX Ralph Lauren seasonal collection along with the U.S. Team uniforms and fan collection. During the tournament, Ralph Lauren will also host guests at an exclusive hospitality suite. And during the Ryder Cup week, the company will be involved in the celebrity all-star match and first tee experience held before the official tournament begins. The final 12-player rosters for the Ryder Cup have not yet been finalized but number-one ranked Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau have already qualified for the U.S. squad while Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood have earned automatic qualifications on Team Europe. The remaining top three European qualifiers will be named after the Betfred British Masters on Aug. 24. The captains of each team will select the remaining six players that will compete. In addition to the Ryder Cup, Ralph Lauren also works with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams, the PGA Championships, Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, the Australian Open and the American Junior Golf Association. The company sponsors golfers Andrea Lee, Billy Horschel, Davis Love 3rd, Tom Watson, Zach Johnson and others. Tijjani Reijnders, Erling Haaland and the top 10 Premier League debuts ranked as Dutch midfield maestro makes flying start to life with Man City
Tijjani Reijnders was named the best midfielder in Serie A last season, and if his stunning Premier League debut against Wolves is anything to go by he could well be on his way to scooping the PFA Player of the Season award this time next year. The Manchester City midfielder was the most expensive of the club's wave of new summer recruits, but there will be no doubts among the club's directors that the £46.3m ($62m) invested in him was money well spent after seeing him settle City's nerves before guiding them to an emphatic 4-0 win over Vitor Pereira's side. But where does Reijnders' exhibition at Molineux rank among the best Premier League debuts ever? GOAL runs down the top 10: Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd vs Bolton, 2003) Cristiano Ronaldo famously moved to United from Sporting CP after impressing Sir Alex Ferguson in a pre-season friendly. Several members of his squad urged the Scottish coach to sign Ronaldo after he repeatedly sprinted past John O'Shea on the left wing while showing off his dazzling dribbling ability. United supporters were subsequently treated to those skills up close on August 16, 2003, as the Portugal star came off the bench for an electrifying cameo in a 4-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers. Ronaldo won a penalty shortly after coming on for David Beckham in the 61st minute, and he proceeded to terrorise the Bolton defence until the final whistle. The forward played a key role in Ryan Giggs' second goal of the game and embarked on several mazy runs that ended with United squandering clear chances, prompting United legend George Best to remark after the game: "It was undoubtedly the most exciting debut performance I've ever seen." Jurgen Klinsmann (Tottenham vs Sheffield Wednesday, 1994) Jurgen Klinsmann was one of the first foreign superstars to create a buzz in the Premier League following his £2m switch to Tottenham from Monaco in July 1994. The World Cup winner arrived in England with a reputation as a deadly marksman, but was also criticised for his theatrics, which he made light of in his first press conference by asking: "Are there any diving schools in London?' Klinsmann was handed his first appearance for Spurs against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, and marked the occasion by heading home the winning goal. The German nodded in Darren Anderton's pinpoint cross to give the Lilywhites a 4-3 victory, and rubbed salt in Wednesday's wounds by celebrating with a dive in front of the home supporters. Alan Shearer (Blackburn vs Crystal Palace, 1992) Alan Shearer's place in the Premier League Hall of Fame has long been cemented. One-hundred-and-forty-eight of his 260 top-flight goals were scored in a Newcastle shirt, but arguably his two most memorable came on his debut for Blackburn Rovers following a then-British record £3.3m move from Southampton in 1992. On the opening day of the newly formed Premier League, Shearer scored two spectacular long-range efforts away at Crystal Palace, and famously commented after the thrilling 3-3 draw: 'If you don't shoot, you don't score.' Anthony Martial (Man Utd vs Liverpool, 2015) Anthony Martial arrived at United from Monaco on September 1, 2015, without much professional experience and a huge transfer fee to justify. The club's decision to fork out a fee of £35m on a 19-year-old, which could potentially rise to £58m ($71m) in performance-related add-ons, was seen as a huge gamble, but the Frenchman silenced his doubters in his maiden outing. Martial's debut came against Liverpool, and he was thrown in at the deep end in the 65th minute of a tense contest at Old Trafford. A Daley Blind effort had given the hosts the lead, and Ander Herrera doubled their advantage from the penalty spot shortly after Martial's introduction, only for Christian Benteke to haul Liverpool back into the game with a spectacular overhead kick. The stage was set for Martial, who picked the ball up on the left wing with four minutes of normal time remaining and charged towards the box. He left Martin Skrtel bamboozled with a clever drop of the shoulder and fired coolly past goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to seal a 3-1 win. Ruud van Nistelrooy (Man Utd vs Fulham, 2001) Ruud van Nistelrooy had to wait a year before completing his dream move to Manchester United after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury, but he quickly made up for lost time after finalising his £19m ($23m) transfer from PSV in August 2001. The Dutchman took his bow against Fulham at Old Trafford, and initially watched on in horror as Louis Saha struck twice to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. Van Nistelrooy's moment eventually came in the 51st minute as he produced an inch-perfect dinked finish to draw the Red Devils level, and two minutes later he showed off his poaching instincts again to score the winner - becoming a new cult hero in the process. Erling Haaland (Man City vs West Ham, 2022) Back in 2022, Premier League fans couldn't wait to get their first glimpse of Erling Haaland in English football after he had demolished all sorts of records in his previous spells with Borussia Dortmund and Red Bull Salzburg. There were some who felt the physicality and competitiveness of the so-called 'best league in the world' would slow him down and Haaland would need some time to adjust to the jump in the level, and his failure to score in the Community Shield against Liverpool seemed to back the doubters up. As it turned out, Haaland wasted little time in embarrassing the naysayers with an emphatic Premier League debut for Manchester City at West Ham. The new signing won a penalty in the first half and calmly dispatched it before cheekily celebrating with his famous lotus pose. He was effectively saying 'I'm here and you better get used to me'. Haaland followed his penalty up with an expertly taken second goal, this time in open play, as he latched onto a through-ball from Kevin De Bruyne and calmly tucked it in with one swing of his left boot. It was a sign of things to come as Haaland went on to score a record 36 goals in his debut campaign and has continued to rip up the league's history books with each passing campaign. Federico Macheda (Man Utd vs Aston Villa, 2009) Federico Macheda was an unheralded inclusion in Manchester United's squad for a crucial fixture against Aston Villa in April 2009 as the Red Devils closed in on a third-successive Premier League title. But by the time the match ended, the youngster had been immortalised by the Old Trafford faithful. The Red Devils were 2-1 down when the Italian was introduced to the action with 30 minutes left, and after Ronaldo equalised in the 80th minute to lift the crowd, Macheda had the final say with only seconds remaining before full-time. The 17-year-old, who had previously impressed in United's academy ranks, produced a superb Cruyff turn after receiving a pass from Ryan Giggs on the edge of the box, wrong-footing Luke Young in the process. Macheda was still some 20 yards out and only had the top right-hand corner of the net to aim at, but he found his spot in expert fashion with a magical curling effort, sparking wild scenes of celebration at the Theatre of Dreams. Tijjani Reinders (Man City v Wolves, 2025) Tijjani Reijnders had already impressed for City since signing from AC Milan at the Club World Cup and in their solitary pre-season friendly win over Palermo, but he saved his best work for the real test, his Premier League bow. Reijnders imitated Andres Iniesta's trademark 'croqueta' dribble to dazzle two Wolves players in the build-up to Haaland's opening goal before scoring himself with an arrowed first-time finish. He followed that up in the second half by setting up the third goal for Haaland by powering forward from midfield and playing a one-two with Oscar Bobb before laying the ball off for the Norwegian hitman to strike again. Reijnders has said that he wants to learn from Ilkay Gundogan and he looks set to have a similar impact to the German while also helping soften the blow of Kevin De Bruyne's departure at the Etihad Stadium. Fabrizio Ravanelli (Middlesbrough vs Liverpool, 1996) Fabrizio Ravanelli moved to Middlesbrough in 1996 on the back of lifting the European Cup with Juventus, and quickly showed that his £7m price tag would be a bargain. The Italian scored three goals on his debut against Liverpool, all equalisers, as his team earned a 3-3 draw with the Merseysiders. Ravanelli's hat-trick goal was the pick of the bunch as he set himself in the box before producing an expert finish into the bottom left-hand corner of the net - and the celebrations that followed would never be forgotten by the fans that were in attendance at the Riverside that day. Sergio Aguero (Man City vs Swansea, 2011) Manchester City won the race to sign Sergio Aguero ahead of a host of top European sides in 2011, agreeing a £35m ($43m) deal with Atletico Madrid which would prove to be a steal. The Argentine became the club's all-time record scorer over the next decade, with 184 of his 260 goals coming in the Premier League - the third-best tally in the competition's history. Aguero gave City fans a tantalising taste of what was to come on his debut against Swansea City as he scored with a trademark poacher's finish shortly after being introduced as a substitute on the hour mark. He then provided an assist for David Silva before rounding off a 4-0 victory for City with a superb long-range strike, beating Swansea keeper Michael Vorm at his far post.

7 Group of Six teams that can make the College Football Playoff in 2025
Once again, we're guaranteed to see at least one team outside the power conferences in the College Football Playoff. The 12-team format includes five spots for conference champions and seven at-large bids. With four power conferences, a conference champion from the American, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West or Sun Belt will make the postseason. Unfortunately for the two-team Pac-12, both Oregon State and Washington State are left to qualify as at-large teams for a second straight season before the Pac-12 adds teams in 2026. Here are seven teams that we think have the best chances to be the highest ranked conference champion outside of the power conferences. All odds are from BetMGM. Boise State (+175 to make College Football Playoff) Can the Broncos go back-to-back as the non-power conference representative in the College Football Playoff? Boise State has the lowest odds of any team outside the Power Four to get to the postseason as the Broncos are the prohibitive favorites in the Mountain West. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Yes, Ashton Jeanty is gone, but Sire Gaines is back healthy. He was a strong complement to Jeanty through the first three games of the season before he suffered a season-ending injury. Gaines will also be running behind an offensive line that returns four starters. QB Maddux Madsen could also take a step forward in his second season as the team's full-time starter. He threw for over 3,000 yards in 2024. The defense needs to replace a ton of sacks from a unit that had 55 in 2024, but Jayden Virgin-Morgan returns after he had 10 a season ago. And like last season, Boise State has a high-profile road game against a likely playoff team. After losing by three to Oregon in Week 2 in 2024, Boise State goes to Notre Dame on Oct. 4 (a game that will also be on Peacock). If Boise doesn't pull the upset over the Irish, a close loss can go a long way again. James Madison (13-1) The Dukes lost four games a season ago but were likely a better team than their 9-4 record suggested. James Madison outscored opponents by 13 points per game, were +20 in turnovers and had two two-point defeats on the road. JMU loses a lot of production from 2024 but coach Bob Chesney loaded up through the transfer portal and QB Alonza Barnett and RB George Pettaway are back. Barnett threw 26 TDs and just four interceptions last season and Pettaway averaged six yards a carry. Replacing Eric O'Neill (13 sacks) and Khairi Manns (nine) will be pivotal on defense. In addition to playing in the easier Sun Belt East, James Madison also has road games at Louisville, Liberty and a home game vs. Washington State. That's a decent non-conference résumé, especially with wins over the Flames and Cougars. Liberty (11-1) Stop us if you've heard this before. Liberty is in line for a winning record but will again face questions about its strength of schedule. The Flames have one of the weakest schedules in the country thanks to playing in Conference USA and not having a marquee non-conference opponent. Along with James Madison, Liberty plays Bowling Green, Maine, and Old Dominion. Liberty is probably going to have to go undefeated to sniff the playoff. Former Coastal Carolina QB Ethan Vasko is in line to take over for Kaidon Salter at quarterback. The passing game really struggled in 2024; no player had more than 30 catches. Improving the pass rush is also imperative. Liberty somehow only had 20 sacks in 2024 after just 25 in 2023. The Flames had 82 sacks in the two seasons before coach Jamey Chadwell took over. Memphis (+825) The Tigers are going for a third straight season of 10 or more wins and their first playoff appearance. Memphis was 11-2 in 2024 and added QB Brendon Lewis from Nevada to take over for Seth Henigan. Lewis rushed for nearly 800 yards in 2024 and can give the Tigers' offense a different look. They may need it with all the turnover at running back and receiver. Greg Desrosiers is the team's leading returning rusher, with 228 yards in 2024, and is also the team's leading returning receiver, with 21 catches for 175 yards. The defense has to be reloaded with transfers too, as Everett Roussaw (UAB) and Sam Brumfield (Virginia Tech) arrive. Don't be surprised if Memphis beats Arkansas at home on Sept. 27. That may be a necessary victory for any playoff hopes. Navy (16-1) It's far more than 'play better against Notre Dame' for Navy. But playing better against Notre Dame is pretty imperative for the Midshipmen in 2025 if they want to sniff the playoff. Navy was 6-0 ahead of the game against the Fighting Irish last season and got walloped 51-14. A loss at Rice followed the next week before Navy closed the season with four wins in its final five games. QB Blake Horvath broke out in 2024 with 1,246 rushing yards and 17 TDs on the ground. He also threw for 13 TDs and 1,353 yards. Can he improve on those numbers in 2025? There's a chance that Navy could start the season 8-0 before games at Notre Dame and Memphis and vs. Army over the last third of the season. Tulane (+750) The Green Wave lost QB Darian Mensah (Duke) and RB Makhi Hughes (Oregon) to the transfer portal in the offseason, but are still positioned to make a run at the American Conference title. Tulane added QB Brendan Sullivan from Iowa and RB Maurice Turner from Louisville. Finding a go-to receiver will be key, with Mario Williams gone and five transfers coming in. The defense returns eight starters and should continue to be a strength after allowing fewer than 21 points per game in each of the past two seasons. Tulane also has the best non-conference schedule of any team on this list. Both Northwestern and Duke come to New Orleans and the Green Wave also visit Ole Miss. Asking for three wins from that is a lot. But Tulane could be in a strong position at 11-2 with an American title. UNLV (18-1) How quickly can Dan Mullen reshape a roster loaded with transfers from power conference schools? UNLV lost a ton from its 2024 team that went 11-3 with two losses to Boise State. LB Marsel McDuffie is the only starter back on defense and RB Jai'Den Thomas is the only one back on offense. Among the transfers coming to Las Vegas are ex-Virginia QB Anthony Colandrea, ex-Utah RB Jaylon Glover and former Alabama and TCU WR JoJo Earle. Mullen could have a very fun offense by the end of the season, and don't count out UNLV beating UCLA in Week 2.
