The Architecture of Football: RIBA & Tate Liverpool Unveil Fall 2025 Exhibition

Hypebeast2 days ago
In partnership with theTate Liverpool, theRoyal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)presents a Fall 2025 exhibition centered on a quintessentially English sporting culture. 'Home Ground: The Architecture of Football' at Gallery One of Tate Liverpool traces the historical development of football stadium design, dating from the 1890s to the present day.
Featuring more than 50 global football stadiums, the Fall 2025 exhibit will dive into the stories and plans for some of the world's most important football venues. As the city prepares for the eventual opening of the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool in 2027, a wealth of architectural models, photographs, and other archival materials will grant visitors insight into the architectural considerations that form the stadium experience and the accompanying social culture of football fandom.
'Football has a unique ability to stir emotions, cross borders and captivate the world,' shared RIBA President, Muyiwa Oki in a statement. 'At their best, stadiums are as iconic as the players themselves, etched into the hearts of fans long after the final whistle. For architects, they offer a rare opportunity to help shape the beautiful game.'
From Everton to Chelsea, the exhibit will start at the foundations of modern stadiums led by early designers like Archibald Leitch, one of the foremost club architects in the early 20th century. RIBA then offers a snapshot of modern stadiums designed by firms like BDP, Populous, Herzog & de Meuron, gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects.
'From the red and blue cauldron of Barcelona's Nou Camp to the iconic arch of Wembley rising in the backdrop of London, great design can amplify atmosphere, heighten drama and leave a lasting mark on a city's skylines,' Oki added.
The Home Ground exhibition will be open from October 15, 2025, to January 6, 2026. Information and tickets will be available atthe official Tate website.

Mohamed Salah scores as Liverpool unleash £270m new signings against Athletic

Liverpool showcased £270million-worth of new signings in the 3-2 friendly victory over Athletic Bilbao but the goals still went to established Premier League winners Mohamed Salah – who also missed a late penalty – and Cody Gakpo. Florian Wirtz's first look at Anfield gave fans a glimpse of why the club made him their – and with add-ons potentially a British – record signing with some clever touches and interplay and almost the opening goal. Head coach Arne Slot believes the Germany international will replace the creativity they lost from the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid. 'I think there is always room for improvement in every department and we have added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons,' said the Dutchman. 'Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third and we have lost with Trent a lot of creativity from the back. 'Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special – Flo has this quality in a totally different position. He brings that creativity.' Wirtz's fellow new signings also showed they were settling in well as Jeremie Frimpong linked up well with Salah, fellow full-back Milos Kerkez was solid and Hugo Ekitike showed flexibility across the forward line. Wirtz headed onto the crossbar before Ekitike crossed for Salah to fire home and Gakpo scored twice after the break after Oihan Sancet had levelled. Liverpool went into the double-header with just one recognised centre-back with Virgil van Dijk ill and Joe Gomez injured and looked vulnerable at set-pieces, with Maroan Sannadi heading an equaliser from a corner. 'The other games pre-season we have conceded a few too many chances but today we hardly conceded anything at all and that pleased me as well,' added Slot. 'So to concede two set-piece goals in the second game is not what you want, especially if you play Crystal Palace next week who are a team who are very strong on set-pieces. That's another thing to work on.' In both matches Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last month, was remembered with fans standing and clapping and singing the forward's song. When the clock showed 20, action on the pitch also halted as players and officials joined in the applause. Liverpool's second string won 4-1 earlier, after an erroneous fire alarm had evacuated the Main Stand before kick-off, with 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha continuing his impressive pre-season form with a goal after just 87 seconds. Ben Doak, three years his senior, also scored while there were goals for Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott, two players whose futures appear to be away from Anfield. Nunez, who has been linked with Al Hilal for a while with AC Milan also opening talks over the Uruguay international, thumped the badge on his shirt in front of the Kop while Elliott was the last to leave the pitch having blown kisses to all four sides of the ground.

The Reds' struggle with Darwin Nunez is set to end with the Uruguayan likely to move on, and his replacement has already arrived in Hugo Ekitike, although the Frenchman's move is potential-based. 🔴 But the incredibly sad loss of Diogo Jota earlier this summer has meant a second striker is required and another forward has now to signed to potentially play a role this season, although reports are suggesting that Alexander Isak is still on the club's radar, so he might also end up joining the Reds. Striker move confirmed by club Until that happens, the focus should be on the signing of Will Wright from Salford City. It has been rumoured for a few days that the 17-year-old was now a Red, but it has taken until now for the club to officially confirm his move. Let it be known that his transfer is an enormous scalp. The player scored 40 goals at the academy level for the Manchester-based club and when you consider his age, you have to just sit back and appreciate how remarkable a goal return that is. Prior to his move, he was being slowly introduced to Salford's first-team, making his FA Cup debut and then appearing twice in League Two. The Englishman's potential is clearly sky-high right now.

Liverpool confirm signing of Arsenal striker target

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Will Wright, after beating Arsenal to the acquisition of the Salford City striker. Photo via On Monday morning, Liverpool confirmed the signing of Will Wright from Salford City, with the 17-year-old making a permanent transfer to the Merseyside club. Though Liverpool don't confirm Wright's contract length, given he's still under 18, the longest he could sign on for is three years – or until 2028. Arsenal were also in for the striker, even reaching an agreement with Salford City. But they never agreed personal terms with the player, and Liverpool did. Photo via Wright on Instagram In terms of why Wright chose Liverpool, reports have suggested the player preferred to stay in the north west, with Anfield significantly closer to his previous home in Salford than the Emirates Stadium in London. Yet there have also been suggestions the player preferred the sporting plan laid out for him by Liverpool. In spite of Arsenal's agreement with Salford, it seems they were never that close to convincing the player. Arsenal had planned to integrate Wright in their u21 side, and Liverpool intend to do the same. In fact, they've already given him his first u21 appearance in a goalless friendly draw with Hull City. Photo via Wright on Instagram Only recently turning 17, Wright had already made four competitive appearances for League Two Salford City prior to his departure. He was also heavily involved in senior pre-season this summer. There have been suggestions Arsenal could turn to Igor Tyjon of Blackburn Rovers as a potential alternative academy forward, but the Gunners have already seen one bid for the player turned down.
