Emma Raducanu In Danger Of Missing Wimbledon? Tennis Ace Suffers Back Injury
Last Updated:
Raducanu will miss the Berlin Open due to a back problem as she prepares for Wimbledon.
Britain's Emma Raducanu will miss next week's Berlin Open due to a back problem as she prepares for the upcoming Wimbledon.
Ranked 37th, Raducanu has been dealing with this back issue since before last month's French Open.
Chinese top seed Zheng Qinwen defeated Raducanu in straight sets and will face US eighth seed Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals on Saturday.
Zheng, along with Keys and Maria, advanced to the last four by breaking the 2021 US Open champion Raducanu twice in the first set and stopping her mini comeback in the second.
World number 37 Raducanu led 3-0 in the second set with two breaks of serve but then suffered three breaks herself, leading to her exit. She took an off-court medical timeout during her quarterfinal loss at Queen's Club on Friday.
Afterward, the 22-year-old Raducanu said she needs rest. 'I'm not overly concerned that it's something serious," the 2021 US Open champion said, 'but I know it's something very annoying and needs proper and careful management."
Nine of the top 10 women's players are set to compete in Berlin, a grass-court event used to prepare for Wimbledon, which starts on June 30, with a record prize money purse up for grabs.

China falls 3-1 to Netherlands in FIH Women's Pro League
Amstelveen, June 15 (UNI) The Chinese women's national field hockey team kicked off its Netherlands leg of the 2025 FIH Pro League campaign with a 3-1 loss to powerhouse Netherlands at the Wagener Hockey Stadium here. China held strong in the opening quarter, fending off an early Dutch offensive just 90 seconds into the game on Saturday. The home side earned a penalty corner but failed to convert. The Dutch broke the deadlock late in the second quarter, scoring in the 13th minute through a well-executed combination inside the shooting circle. In the third quarter, the Netherlands quickly extended their lead in the fourth minute, followed by another goal off a penalty corner which made it 3-0. China responded in the final quarter. In the eighth minute, young defender Tan Jintong scored on a rebound following a penalty corner, narrowing the gap to 3-1. The team continued to press, launching several promising attacks inside the circle, but couldn't find the net again before the final whistle. After the match, captain Ou Zixia praised her squad's performance despite the loss. "It was a high-quality game, and I'm proud of how resilient we were," she said. "Our defense was solid, but we need to convert more scoring opportunities." Ou also singled out goalscorer Tan for her standout performance. "She's a young player with great technical skills and defensive strength. I believe she's a rising star worth watching." Head coach Alyson Annan expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, noting that two of the goals conceded came from China's own defensive errors. "I think all of our players played really well," she said. "You have to be making errors in these games to learn. And this is the place to do it. I prefer to make errors and learn from them in these games than in two or three years (later in those games) of Olympics." Looking ahead to China's second game against the Netherlands on Sunday, Annan said the team must maintain the strong spirit they showed in the opener while better matching the tempo of top-tier competition.

Olympic champion Zheng defeated in semifinals at Queen's club
London, June 15 (UNI) China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen ended her journey at the Queen's Club Championships as the world No. 5 lost to American Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the women's singles semifinals here. The 22-year-old Zheng was obviously not in her best form as she not only struggled in her first serves but also made many unforced errors on Saturday. Although she managed to level the match while world No. 15 Anisimova also struggled in her own serving games in the second set, the top seed of the WTA 500 grass-court event was not good enough to outplay Anisimova. "I have to say that I could not concentrate on playing but worried about my shoes," revealed Zheng, who changed her shoes in the sixth game of the deciding set. "I noticed there was something wrong with my shoes, but I didn't realize that the sole has been unglued until the third set." "They were unused until yesterday, but they have been kept for years as they were from the period I was still playing in juniors," explained Zheng. As she didn't receive any new pair of grass-court shoes from her sponsor in time, Zheng had to wear the pair which she felt too slippery during the last match again. In Friday's quarterfinal against home sensation Emma Raducanu, Zheng asked for a timeout in the first set to change for a pair of new shoes before breaking Raducanu for the first time. "I couldn't keep going as I have slipped a few times," Zheng explained after Friday's match. "Since I arrived here, I was wearing the shoes from last year's Wimbledon. I know exactly when I should change shoes either on the hard court or the clay court, but I'm not sure while playing on grass. I did ask for opinion from my coach ahead of my first match. He said maybe later and I felt all right yesterday." Zheng admitted that all details mattered and she has learned a lesson. She just hoped that next time she could prepare well and wouldn't be affected by the same kind of issue. Anisimova will face German qualifier Tatjana Maria in Sunday's final as the 37-year-old mom of two beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys on Saturday. UNI/XINHUA BM
