Olympic champion Zheng defeated in semifinals at Queen's club
London, June 15 (UNI) China's Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen ended her journey at the Queen's Club Championships as the world No. 5 lost to American Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the women's singles semifinals here.
The 22-year-old Zheng was obviously not in her best form as she not only struggled in her first serves but also made many unforced errors on Saturday.
Although she managed to level the match while world No. 15 Anisimova also struggled in her own serving games in the second set, the top seed of the WTA 500 grass-court event was not good enough to outplay Anisimova.
"I have to say that I could not concentrate on playing but worried about my shoes," revealed Zheng, who changed her shoes in the sixth game of the deciding set.
"I noticed there was something wrong with my shoes, but I didn't realize that the sole has been unglued until the third set."
"They were unused until yesterday, but they have been kept for years as they were from the period I was still playing in juniors," explained Zheng.
As she didn't receive any new pair of grass-court shoes from her sponsor in time, Zheng had to wear the pair which she felt too slippery during the last match again.
In Friday's quarterfinal against home sensation Emma Raducanu, Zheng asked for a timeout in the first set to change for a pair of new shoes before breaking Raducanu for the first time.
"I couldn't keep going as I have slipped a few times," Zheng explained after Friday's match.
"Since I arrived here, I was wearing the shoes from last year's Wimbledon. I know exactly when
I should change shoes either on the hard court or the clay court, but I'm not sure while playing on grass. I did ask for opinion from my coach ahead of my first match. He said maybe later and I felt
all right yesterday."
Zheng admitted that all details mattered and she has learned a lesson. She just hoped that next time she could prepare well and wouldn't be affected by the same kind of issue.
Anisimova will face German qualifier Tatjana Maria in Sunday's final as the 37-year-old mom of two beat Australian Open champion Madison Keys on Saturday.

Patrick Mahomes vs Lionel Messi popularity battle heats up as Fox Sports hosts declare a clear winner
Patrick Mahomes vs Lionel Messi popularity battle heats up as Fox sports hosts declare a clear winner (Image via Getty) Two of the most well-known names in sports are Patrick Mahomes and Lionel Messi. With millions of fans and countless honors, Mahomes—the NFL quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs and Messi, a worldwide football legend who now plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, have many admirers. One of them seems, however, to be the highlight in the United States. A recent talk on Fox Sports Radio raised a surprising point—Patrick Mahomes may be more popular than Lionel Messi in America. Even though Lionel Messi is a global icon, some believe Patrick Mahomes holds the spotlight here at home. Patrick Mahomes appears to be more popular than Lionel Messi in the U.S., according to Fox radio hosts Hosting the Covino and Rich Show on Fox Sports Radio on Friday, June 14, 2025, Steve Covino and Rich Davis arrived at an interesting conclusion: Which sports star is bigger in the U. S. ? Patrick Mahomes or Lionel Messi? Steve Covino said he believes Patrick Mahomes is still ahead in terms of fame in America. He explained, 'I'm going Mahomes. It's America's game.'The hosts pointed out that football has a stronger hold in U.S. culture than soccer. Even though Lionel Messi came to support the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LVIII in New Orleans earlier this year, Patrick Mahomes still gets more attention. That Super Bowl was one of the most-watched events in the country, but even Lionel Messi's appearance didn't change the fact that NFL players get more media buzz in America. They also shared that even with a slight 2% drop in NFL viewership this season, the league still leads all sports in U.S. television ratings. Lionel Messi's global fame still can't top Patrick Mahomes' American spotlight Rich Davis said on air, 'If you ask 100 kids in middle or high school who they want to visit their school, most would say Mahomes.' He also added, 'Soccer is growing, and the younger generation is starting to care more.' Still, both Steve Covino and Rich Davis agreed that Lionel Messi is much bigger around the world. Steve Covino said, 'Messi owns the rest of the world. No question.' But he ended the talk by saying Patrick Mahomes remains the face of American sports today. Viral: Remembering an emotional moment between Jim Redmond and his Olympian son on Father's day
Image credits: X They say holding hands with each other makes you feel and be stronger. But if there's one person in the world who not only holds your hand since your birth but also holds your entire being through life with their hands behind your back, it's a father. Their silent but symbolic support can carry one through any hurdle of life. One such father was Jim Redmond, who created one of the most iconic and memorable moments in Olympic history. Redmond, whose son Derek was a participant in a 400-meter men's race at the 1992 Games, jumped onto the track to help his injured son and make his way across the finishing line. The father who was just supporting his son through a difficult time in life, helping him complete his dream, is still remembered by people every Father's Day . Derek Redmond- a loved son and famous sprinter Image credits: X Derek Redmond was a popular sprinter from England who was widely supported to win a medal at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. He had been a member of the 1991 English men's relay team which had won the gold at the world championships. He ran the fastest time in his 400-meter qualifying round and won the quarterfinal race in Barcelona. A true father-son moment Image credits: X Derek took his place in the fifth lane for the semi-finals at the Olympic Stadium with some 65,000 people watching, including his father. In the beginning, he was off to a good start and with 250 metres to go and three runners ahead of him, he seemed ready to begin his journey to the finishing line. However, suddenly he reached to the back of his thigh and began hopping. He had pulled his hamstring and crumpled to pain in the ground. While attendees rushed to help he stood back up again and kept on moving ahead even though other runners had crossed the finishing line. 'It was all animal instinct,' he told The New York Times few days after the race. 'I kept thinking I could still catch the other runners. I didn't want to quit. I'm a very selfish person.' The film crew turned to see his father entering the track wearing a Nike cap, blue shorts and a white T-shirt that read "Have you hugged your feet today?" An attendant tried to stop him but he blew him away to move ahead and reach his ailing ceremony. 'You don't have to do this,' Derek recalled his father telling him. 'You don't have to put yourself through this.' But Derek insisted he had to finish, and thus his father said, "we're going to finish this together." 'I don't speak Spanish and I wasn't going to be stopped by anything,' he told the reporters a few days later. By the time they reached the finishing line, the crowd was up and roaring, and the camera crew was surrounding them recording a moment that was not only emotional but also iconic. Social media reactions Image credits: X Recently, a social media account took to X to share the iconic video of Derek and Jim, writing, "No Father's Day is complete without this video."
