A lot of things in England's favour

BBC News4 days ago
There are still "a lot of things in England's favour" as they seek the 35 runs needed to claim a thrilling series win against India on day five of the fifth and final Test on Monday, says batter Joe Root. The hosts, chasing a challenging 374 to win, will resume on 339-6 at The Oval after India fought back with three wickets in the evening session before bad weather ended play early. Root scored his 39th Test century in a stunning fourth-wicket partnership of 195 with Harry Brook, who added a 91-ball century of his own but Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton struggled towards the end of the day against India's fired-up seamers. "It is quite a fitting end for how the rest of the series has gone. It has ebbed and flowed all of the way through and this Test is exactly same," Root told BBC Test Match Special."We are in for a cracker, we are in a good position. We have another heavy roller available."Things might happen quicker with new ball, it might be easier to score. "A lot of things are in our favour. We have so much ability left in the dressing room and clearly they have had a good passage of play but Monday could be a real good opportunity to get across the line."
There was speculation around whether Chris Woakes would bat, considering his shoulder injury sustained on day one, but he was seen wearing his whites in the England dressing room and Root said he would be prepared to bat if necessary. Root was visibly frustrated at his own dismissal, punching his bat after nicking behind off Prasidh Krishna, but said it was in response to his own error rather than a response to the pair's tense exchange on day two."I was really frustrated because I missed out, it was really disappointing to not still be there tonight and get us over the line. "But we are still in a really good position, a lot of batting left and the two guys out there are very capable of seeing us home."It has been one hell of a series, one hell of a journey and we have the confidence in our dressing room."
Delay was a 'hammer blow' for India
India's seamers had no answers to Brook and Root during their astonishing partnership, with Brook's counter-attacking knock taking all of the momentum after the tourists had removed Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope early in the day. But they looked a different side, understandably, when both had departed. Mohammed Siraj charged in as usual and Prasidh Krishna consistently hit a probing length to unsettle England's middle order.Jacob Bethell was bowled by Krishna for a scratchy five from 31 balls, Overton and Smith could barely get the ball off the square and the delay - initially for bad light and then for rain - halted India's sudden and unlikely charge for victory."It [the delay] benefits England massively," said former England captain Sir Alastair Cook on BBC Test Match Special."It is a hammer blow for India. The atmosphere would have been unbelievable for India tonight. They were so on top, the only way England could get a run away was a leg-bye." But WinViz has England as heavy favourites with an 84% chance of victory which would see them take a 3-1 series win and an enormous confidence boost into the winter's Ashes."I think England will get over the line and I think Jamie Smith will do the job. I am hoping Chris Woakes doesn't have to walk out there," said former captain Michael Vaughan.

Liverpool will not be held to ransom in pursuit of Alexander Isak

Liverpool will not be held to ransom in their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak. The PA news agency understands the Premier League champions remain keen on the 25-year-old Sweden international, who was made to train by himself on Tyneside on Wednesday after missing the Magpies' pre-season trip to Singapore and South Korea amid speculation over his future. However, as they await completion of Darwin Nunez's proposed 53million euros – around £46.3million – plus bonuses move to Saudi club Al Hilal, sources on Merseyside indicated they would not enter a bidding war as they sought a replacement. Liverpool's admiration of Isak, who scored what proved to be the winning goal against them in last season's Carabao Cup final at Wembley, is well known and they have already tabled a bid of around £110m, which was swiftly rejected. Newcastle have repeatedly insisted the Swede, for whom they paid Real Sociedad £63m during the summer of 2022, is simply not for sale and with three years remaining on his existing contract, they hold a strong position in one sense. However Isak, who signalled his intention to explore his options during the current transfer window, has so far resisted all overtures to sign a new, long-term deal at St James' Park and that appears to have encouraged the Anfield club that they may be able to prise him from head coach Eddie Howe's grasp. That said, the Reds are understood to have drawn up a series of criteria which will govern their pursuit of the former AIK Solna and Borussia Dortmund forward, or indeed alternative targets. Among them are an insistence that any replacement must be of the required quality, must represent fair market value and perhaps most importantly, must be realistically attainable. In that context, Newcastle's asking price of £150m – which was designed to ward off potential suitors – would seem a significant obstacle, as would their long-held stance on his availability, although there is little doubt that he would meet the quality requirement having scored 27 goals in all competitions last season. In addition, the Magpies' interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko looks unlikely to come to fruition with Manchester United confident they are in the driving seat, complicating the search for a credible replacement with Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson having being touted as an option. Newcastle were already in the market for a striker following Callum Wilson's departure at the end of last season, but plugging the gap left by a man around whom Howe would ideally want to build his team, during a summer which has already proved intensely difficult, would be both difficult and expensive. The alternative is to persuade Isak that his future remains at St James' at least in the short term – there is little doubt that his head has been turned – and that is a task which would take all his manager's estimable powers. It remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool will increase their offer for the player if and when the Nunez deal is finalised. They will bank a significant proportion of the 75m euros – around £65.4m – plus bonuses they paid Benfica for the 26-year-old Uruguay international in June 2022, having rebuffed advances from Saudi Arabia in January and Napoli, who are understood not to have met the club's valuation and to have wanted to pay the fee over five years, this summer.

Newcastle could suffer ANOTHER transfer blow after Benjamin Sesko's Man United decision - as Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr eye move for Magpies target

Newcastle could reportedly be set to miss out on another one of their transfer targets this summer. Despite securing Champions League football Eddie Howe 's side have endured a decidedly disappointing window thus far. The club's all-time record signing Alexander Isak's future remains in the air with the wantaway striker attempting to force through a move to Premier League champions Liverpool. Meanwhile Benjamin Sesko looks set to join Manchester United following a protracted saga despite Newcastle's best efforts to bring the RB Leipzig man to St James' Park. After Sesko named Old Trafford as his preferred destination Newcastle have wasted little time in identifying alternative targets to strengthen their options going forward for the coming campaign. One of those players said to feature on Eddie Howe's shortlist is Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. Magpies are said to be weighing up a move for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa this summer Wissa netted 19 Premier League goals for the Bees last season and has also attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham and Nottingham Forest. However, after losing long-time manager Thomas Frank this summer and with Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard and Mark Flekken all leaving the club Brentford are said to be determined to hold on to the 28-year-old. According to a report from L'Equipe, while Newcastle are said to have been put off by Brentford's asking price for Wissa, Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr are ready to meet their demands. Former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran departed Al-Nassr on loan this summer just months after completing a lucrative switch to the gulf state club. As such, Jorge Jesus' side are on the hunt for attacking reinforcements to partner the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane in the star-studded team. After initially being linked with a move away from the club after again failing to secure a league title win in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo ultimately signed a bumper new two-year deal with Al-Nassr in June. The new terms, which will take him past his 42nd birthday, reportedly include an eye-watering basic salary of £488,000-a-day.
