Two dead and two others fight for their lives after ship smashes into bridge
A majestic Mexican navy tall ship's festive tour turned to horror after it slammed into the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night — sending one of its enormous masts crashing down and leaving multiple sailors seriously injured.
At least two people have been killed after a Mexican navy ship carrying hundreds of cadets and crew collided with the Brooklyn Bridge.
The Cuauhtémoc, a stunning 270-foot training vessel,collided with the bridge just before 8.30pm on Saturday, May 17, with one of its towering 147-foot masts smashing into the bridge's road deck, according to sources.
The terrifying impact brought the mast crashing down onto the ship's deck in a horrifying scene captured on video. The crash happened in a matter of seconds and without warning leaving at least 19 other people injured, including two in critical condition.
Emergency responders raced to the scene, with NYPD Harbor and Scuba teams conducting a frantic search and rescue mission. The bridge was briefly closed in both directions but was later reopened at around 10:30pm.
Although no one was believed to have fallen into the East River, dozens of victims were reported injured on board, with four sailors in critical condition, according to fire officials. Video from the scene showed horrified onlookers screaming and fleeing as the vessel approached, as part of its enormous masts sheared off one by one with the sickening sound of a crack as each one snapped.
This morning Mayor Eric Adams took to X to provid an update on the incident, he wrote: "Earlier tonight, the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge. At this time, of the 277 on board, 19 sustained injuries, 2 of which remain in critical condition, and 2 more have sadly passed away from their injuries.
"We are praying for everyone on board and their families and are grateful to our first responders who quickly jumped into action, ensuring this accident wasn't much worse. Following our preliminary inspection, we can confirm that the bridge sustained no damage and is now open to the public."
The training ship, which was built at the Celaya Shipyards in Bilbao, Spain in 1981, according to the South Street Seaport Museum, was backing out from Pier 17 when the crash occurred. While the exact cause of the crash has not been officially conifirmed it appeared to have lost power, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
The collision was caught on camera by multiple people from multiple angles as crowds gathered to film the grand ship as it attempted to depart. Footage shows the ship moving in reverse, slowly approaching the bridge, before the topmost mast makes contact. The impact resulted in debris like splintered beams, light fixtures, and canvas falling from the ship.
The ship was disembarking from New York and heading to Iceland, a New York police official said.

New York public schools are getting an extra-long winter break this year—here's why
Good news for NYC public school students: Next winter's holiday break just got a little longer, and a lot less confusing. In an update to the 2025–2026 public school calendar, the Department of Education officially gave students and staff Friday, January 2, off, extending winter recess through the entire week. The original calendar had classes resuming that Friday, making for a lone, awkward school day between New Year's Day and the weekend. Students will return on Monday, January 5, making for a much cleaner (and cheerier) break. 'We got it done! Friday, January 2, is now part of winter break,' the United Federation of Teachers texted to its members last week, according to New York Daily News, which first broke the story. A DOE spokesperson confirmed the change. It's not the first time that city leadership has stepped in to dodge a one-day week. Last December, Mayor Eric Adams pulled a similar move, declaring Monday, December 23, 2024, a day off after a Brooklyn eighth grader's petition went viral and racked up more than 20,000 signatures. This time, the change was made early, avoiding the last-minute scramble that puzzled many schools and families last year. The change means kids will enjoy a 12-day break in total, plenty of time for sledding in Prospect Park, checking out the holiday windows on Fifth Avenue or taking in the New York Botanical Garden's annual train show without worrying about Friday homework. Of course, with the school calendar already stretched by added holidays like Diwali and state-mandated minimums for instructional days, the move doesn't come without trade-offs. For now, the city has opted to avoid tacking on an extra day next June by repurposing teacher training days. Winter break isn't the only thing changing for New York City students next year. A citywide smartphone ban is coming, which will see schools enforcing new rules around phone use during the day. So, while students may get an extra day to scroll TikTok at home this January, their phone freedom will now end at the schoolhouse door.
