Mohali: The morning calm of Balongi in Mohali was shattered by screams and sirens as a 30-year-old bouncer was hacked to death in a savage daylight attack, marking the seventh stabbing-related death in the Tricity in just one month.
The victim, Sarabjit Singh, never saw it coming. What began as a petty parking dispute spiralled into a deadly ambush. Three men, believed to be residents of a nearby PG, cornered him and another person between 9 and 10 am. Armed with sharp-edged weapons, they struck with brutal precision. A second man managed to flee. Sarabjit wasn't so lucky.
By the time he was rushed to the civil hospital, it was over. The post-mortem confirmed multiple stab wounds.
Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu said, "The minor argument escalated over a car parking issue resulting in the death of Sarabjit. The three have been identified and will be arrested soon."
Eyewitnesses informed the police that the accused fled the scene immediately after the attack. The motive behind the assault is yet to be confirmed, but preliminary investigation points towards a possible road rage dispute over a parking issue.

Sources said that previously Sarabjit reportedly thrashed one of the three assailants, and today they, with the excuse of car parking, picked up an argument and stabbed Sarabjit to death.
Police teams have launched a manhunt to trace the absconding suspects and are scanning CCTV footage from the area. Statements of local residents and the survivor are also being recorded to aid the probe.
"We're recording statements and combing the area. The attackers will be caught," said Balongi SHO Inspector Kulwant Singh.
Locals are rattled. "It's like the streets are turning into battlegrounds," said a Balongi resident. Residents are demanding night patrols, stricter surveillance, and a crackdown on illegal weapons.

Russia's Overnight Aerial Strike On Western Ukraine Kills 1, Injures 18
Kyiv: Russian overnight attack killed one person, injured at least 18, and struck a US electronics manufacturer in western Ukraine, Ukrainian officials said on Thursday. A missile attack injured 15 people and destroyed storage facilities at the manufacturer in the town of Mukachevo, emergency services and local authorities in the western Zakarpattia region said. National television showed the region's governor, Myroslav Biletskyi, standing near the building engulfed in smoke, who said the plant was producing consumer electronics, while Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strike in a post on X. "A fully civilian facility that has nothing to do with defence or the military," he said. Contrary to all efforts to end the war, Russia undertook a massive combined air strike on Ukraine overnight. In the western city of Lviv, the attack killed one person, injured three more, and damaged 26 homes, according to Governor Maksym Kozytskyi. Ukrainian Air Force said that Russia used 574 drones and 40 missiles in the overnight attack on the country, which was the biggest one so far in August. "This is why efforts to force Russia to end the war are so critical," Sybiha said. The strike took place at a time of intense efforts by US President Donald Trump to bring an end to the Russian war in Ukraine. Russia, which denies targeting civilians, has used missiles and drones to strike Ukrainian towns and cities far from the front lines of the war. Thousands of civilians, the vast majority of them Ukrainian, have been killed since Moscow invaded in 2022.

Mansion of ‘Machhli family' near Hathaikheda dam razed amid heavy security
Bhopal: In a demolition operation that lasted nearly six hours, joint teams of district administration, police and municipal corporation on Thursday demolished the mansion of the "Machhli family" in Anantapura, Kokta Hathaikheda. The alleged illegal property, built over 15,000 square feet of govt land, was razed with the help of six earth mover machines amid heavy police deployment. Two members of the Machhli family including Shahwar Ahmed and Yasin Ahmed were arrested by the crime branch of Bhopal police for allegedly running an MD drugs supply racket in the city. They were also booked on charges of rape, molestation, extortion and assault. According to official sources, the mansion was built in 1990 and the three-storey mansion had more than 30 rooms, large halls, marble flooring on the terrace, a park, garage, playroom for children and luxury amenities spread over an acre of land. The market value of the razed property has been estimated at Rs 20 to 25 crore. The demolition had originally been scheduled for July 31 but was stalled following the Supreme Court guidelines, which required prior notice to be served to the owner of a house before the demolition of residential properties. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Here's what a microbiologist says CNA Read More Undo On Thursday around 11 am, when the demolition team arrived with heavy police force, local women attempted to resist and even misbehaved with the officers. However, after the deployment of additional women police personnel to control the protestors, the protest subsided and the illegal mansion was brought down by 5 pm. According to district administration officials, the Machhli family had illegally occupied nearly 70 acres of govt land near Anantpura and constructed three farmhouses, a warehouse, a factory, a madarsa and shops. In a previous demolition drive carried out on July 30, several of these structures were demolished. With Thursday's action, all seven illegal constructions have now been razed, freeing govt land valued at nearly Rs 100 crore. On July 31, the family's lawyer had managed to halt the demolition, citing Supreme Court guidelines requiring 15 days notice before demolishing residential structures. This time, however, despite fresh objections from the defence lawyer, officials went ahead with the operation, asserting that due notices had already been served. "The accused had encroached upon govt land and constructed large illegal buildings. Notices were duly served earlier. Thursday's action has ensured the recovery of govt property worth crores and restored it to official possession," said an officer of the district administration present at the site. Trial courts consistently failing to perform duties, says MP HC
Bhopal: A division bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court observed that "the trial courts in the state are consistently failing to perform their duties as a judge despite regular training at the National Judicial Academy". While acquitting a person convicted to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl under POCSO Act on the ground that the survivor may be an adult and not a minor, the bench of Justice Vivek Agarwal and Justice A K Singh said, "It is surprising to note that despite regular training in the Madhya Pradesh State Judicial Academy, trial courts are consistently failing to perform their duties as a judge. Though the DNA report was exhibited after closure of the prosecution evidence, but, trial court did not deem it proper to record supplementary statements of accused under Section 313 of CrPC and confront him to the circumstances which appeared against him in view of DNA test report despite referring to it in its judgment. " The case in question involved the acquittal of a person, who was previously sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a 17-year-old girl. The high court's decision to overturn the conviction was based on several procedural and evidentiary oversights by the trial court. The HC criticised the trial court for not adequately considering the DNA report and the ossification test, both of which are crucial in determining the age of the victim and the circumstances surrounding the case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Here's what a microbiologist says CNA Read More Undo The DNA report, which was introduced after the closure of prosecution evidence, was not used to confront the accused under Section 313 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). This section mandates that the accused be given an opportunity to explain any evidence against them, a step that was evidently overlooked. Furthermore, the ossification test, which can provide an estimate of a person's age, was not given due consideration. The high court noted that the ossification test indicated the victim's age could range between 17 to 19 years, suggesting she might not have been a minor at the time of the incident. The court emphasised that while ossification tests are not entirely precise, they offer a more reliable basis for age determination when other evidence is lacking. The judgment also pointed out the failure to exhibit the x-ray report ordered by Dr Geeta Barmate, which could have further supported the defence case. The court underscored the importance of such medical evidence, referencing the textbook of medical jurisprudence and toxicology by Modi, which discusses the fusion of the iliac crest in females as occurring between 17 to 19 years of age. The court's decision to acquit the accused was also influenced by the lack of documentary evidence from the survivor's parents regarding her date of birth. This absence of evidence, combined with the ossification test results, led the court to extend the benefit of doubt to the accused.
