Damascus stock exchange reopens after 6 months
Shafaq News/ On Monday, trading resumed at Syria's Damascus Securities Exchange after nearly six months of suspension, in a ceremony marked by official attendance and strong participation from investors, traders, and economic figures.
Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad Yasar Barnea stressed that the market's return is 'not just a technical step, but a clear message that the wheels of the economy are turning again, and a new phase of recovery is underway.'
He noted that the exchange is undergoing a structural shift to become a privately held entity, adding, 'We will pursue digital transformation and aim to make the exchange a powerful tool for attracting investment.'
The reopening followed a strong close to 2024 when the exchange recorded notable figures: trading volume in the fourth quarter reached nearly 29 million shares, valued at over 101 billion Syrian pounds (about $7.768M). On November 28, 2024, the main index hit an all-time high, nearing the 108,000-point mark.

Kurdish politician warns of political fallout over Baghdad salary freeze
Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, Senior Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Hoshyar Zebari criticized the federal government's decision to halt funding for salaries of public employees in Iraq's Kurdistan region, calling it a form of 'collective punishment' that would have 'political consequences.' On X, Zebari described the move as an attempt by the government of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and the Coordination Framework to 'starve citizens under financial and administrative pretexts.' He added, 'We are not living in an ideal city; history shows the aggressor will be held accountable.' Tensions between Erbil and Baghdad have escalated over the decision by Iraq's federal finance ministry to freeze May 2025 salary transfers to the Region. Baghdad cited the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)'s alleged failure to hand over oil and non-oil revenues as mandated in the federal budget. Beyond sanctions: US seeks political reform in Syria
Shafaq News/ On Tuesday, the United States reaffirmed its commitment to a political solution in Syria, urging the country's new leadership to adopt transparent governance and inclusive political participation. Speaking at a press briefing attended by Shafaq News in Washington, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Washington continues to back its special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrett Ratney, in engaging with the new Syrian government. 'Our demands remain unchanged,' Bruce stated, highlighting the need for 'transparency and inclusive political participation.' Bruce noted that the US has introduced limited sanctions exemptions to support humanitarian projects, including electricity and basic services, aimed at improving living conditions and expanding opportunities for Syrians. She declined to address reports that the US had implicitly approved the continued detention or integration of foreign fighters into the defense structures of the Syrian Interim Government. However, she stressed that the United States expects 'clear and transparent steps from Damascus' and will maintain close oversight of the political process to ensure it stays on track toward a viable resolution.
