PE firm Blackstone acquires South City Mall in Kolkata for ₹3.2K cr
Spread over one million square feet, the mall features an array of brands from Zara to Tommy Hilfiger, Armani, Calvin Klein, Benetton, Adidas, Puma and Skechers, among others.
It has an expansive food and beverage footprint with 10 restaurants. And, the 1,400-seater food court is touted to be the largest in the region.
The mall generates an annual turnover of ₹1,800 crore.
Asheesh Mohta, head of real estate acquisitions - India, Blackstone, said, South City Mall is a place where the community comes together – it's the definitive destination in Kolkata for shopping, dining, leisure, and entertainment.
'We are committed to continuing South City Group's wonderful work and positioning South City Mall for long-term success, benefiting from our scale, operational expertise, and deep experiences in the retail sector, particularly in India where we own one of the largest retail portfolios,' Mohta said in a statement.
Anarock said that the transaction is the largest real estate deal in Kolkata and largest in the mall space in eastern India.
It said, 'Kolkata's real estate market currently faces a supply constraint in Grade-A malls, with most leases happening on main streets.'
Soumendu Chatterjee, regional director – land, Anarock Group, said, 'The mall has a very high footfall — daily visitors range between 55,000 and 60,000, surging to 75,000-200,000 during weekends and festival seasons.'
Launched in 2008, the South City Mall was developed by six Kolkata business families — Emami Group, Merlin Group, Park Chambers Group, Shrachi Group, Jugal Kishore Khetawat, and Rajendra Kumar Bachhawat.
Sushil Mohta, chairman of the Merlin Group and director of South City Projects Ltd, said that the transaction represents more than an acquisition – it's a vote of confidence in eastern India's retail ecosystem.
Earlier, Blackstone — through Nexus Select Trust — the only retail real estate investment trust in India, acquired Citywalk mall in Delhi's Saket for ₹6,200 crore. This is the country's most expensive mall deal.
In 2020, Blackstone acquired the mall business of Bengaluru-based Prestige Estates Projects for $1,237 million.
As part of a combined transaction, Blackstone has also acquired unsold inventories in Sri Lankan residential project Altair from the South City Group, taking the total deal size to ₹3,400 crore.
Prakash Bachawat, a key stakeholder in South City Projects, said the investment would undoubtedly accelerate the growth trajectory of both assets while maintaining their premium market positioning.

Neither Mukesh Ambani nor Gautam Adani, this man owns India's most expensive number plate; its price will shock you, he is..., business is..
For many, owning luxury cars is a dream. Often, several celebrities and businessmen in the country are in the news due to their luxury cars. In addition, they also have their respective VIP number plates or registration numbers, which add to their prestige. You may have heard about stars like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Shah Rukh Khan, and Mukesh Ambani with special number car plates. However, did you know that the country's most expensive number plate does not belong to those stars? The title goes to Venu Gopalakrishnan, a tech company CEO from Kerala. The CEO of Litmus7, Venu Gopalakrishnan, recently added a new luxury car to his car collection. He bought himself a Lamborghini Urus Performante priced around Rs 4 crore. But what has caught everyone's attention is not the car itself, but it is the number plate. His car has the registration KL 07 DG 0007. If media reports are to be believed, Venu paid Rs 45.99 lakh for the unique plate, which is so far the most expensive number plate in the country. This extravagant purchase has made history in the state of Kerala as the highest vehicle registration number price ever. On April 7, 2025, the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department held an online auction in which Gopalakrishnan, the founder and CEO of Kochi-based Litmus7 Systems Consulting Pvt. Ltd., an IT company, acquired the highly coveted 007 registration number, which is popular among car enthusiasts. The bidding for this number began at Rs 25,000 and went higher quickly on the register bid to break our record. The '0007' number – reminiscent of the famous James Bond code – gives Gopalakrishnan's new purchase an exclusivity. The lime-green Lamborghini Urus Performante priced approximately at Rs 4 crore, is reportedly the first of its kind in Kerala. Gopalakrishnan took to Instagram to share a video of his new luxury car. Gopalakrishnan is known for his collection of luxury vehicles, which includes a Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato and a BMW M1000 XR bike. His latest purchase represents the growing trend of personalizing luxurious vehicles with unique registration numbers, which are often regarded as status symbols.

IDFC First Bank says the cuts will boost India's GDP by 0.6 percentage points over 12 months but will cost the state and federal government $20 billion it will improve weak stock market sentiment and bring political dividends for Modi ahead of a critical state election in the eastern state of Bihar, said Rasheed Kidwai, a fellow at New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation."GST reduction will impact everyone, unlike cuts to income tax, which is paid by only 3%-4% of the population. Modi is doing this as he is under a lot of pressure due to U.S. policies," said Kidwai."The move will also help the stock market, which is now politically important as it has a lot of retail investors."India launched the major tax system in 2017 that subsumed local state taxes into the new, nationwide GST to unify its economy for the first the biggest tax reform since India's independence faced criticism for its complex design that taxes products and services under four slabs - 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.Last year, India said caramel popcorn would be taxed at 18% but the salted category at 5%, triggering criticism about a glaring example of GST's the new system, India will abolish the 28% slab - which includes cars and electronics - and move nearly all of the items under the 12% category to the lower 5% slab, benefitting many more consumer items and packaged data shows the 28% and 12% tax slabs together garner 16% of India's annual GST revenue of roughly $250 billion last fiscal is a key state politically and goes to the polls by November. A recent survey by the VoteVibe agency showed Modi's opposition has an edge largely because of a lack of jobs."Any tax cut has wide public appreciation. But of course, the timing is purely determined by political exigencies," said Dilip Cherian, a communications consultant and co-founder of Indian public relations firm Perfect Relations."It seems to be an indication of some mixture of frustration as well as recognition that there is a broad public pushback against high and crippling rates of taxation."Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has seized on his tax announcement, posting on X that on the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, "a brighter gift of simpler taxes and more savings is waiting for every Indian."Modi has vowed to protect farmers, fishermen and cattlemen, following Trump's surprise tariff announcement on India, after trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil latest round of trade talks between the two nations set for August 25-29 has also been called off.
