Ukraine launches drone attack on Russian factory ahead of peace summit
A Ukrainian official said at least four drones launched by the country's security services, or SBU, struck a plant in the city of Arzamas that produced components for the Khinzal 32 and Khinzal 101 missiles.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss operations, said the Plandin plant produces gyroscopic devices, control systems and on-board computers for the missiles and is an 'absolutely legitimate target' because it is part of the Russian military-industrial complex that works for the war against Ukraine.
Russia's defence ministry said its air defences intercepted and destroyed a total of 39 Ukrainian drones overnight and Monday morning over several Russian regions as well as over the Crimean peninsula that Russia annexed in 2014.
The summit, which US President Donald Trump will host in Alaska later this week, sees Mr Putin unwavering on his demands to keep all the Ukrainian territory his forces now occupy but also to prevent Kyiv from joining Nato with the long-term aim to keep the country within Moscow's sphere of influence.
Mr Putin believes he enjoys the advantage on the ground as Ukrainian forces struggle to hold back Russian advances along the 600-mile front.
But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insists he will never consent to any Russian annexation of Ukrainian territory nor give up his country's bid for Nato membership.
European leaders have rallied behind Ukraine, saying peace in the war-torn nation cannot be resolved without Kyiv.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also spoke with Mr Trump on Sunday, Mr Merz's spokesman said on Monday, but did not disclose the contents of the talks.
Spokesman Steffen Meyer reiterated that the German government 'has always emphasised that borders must not be shifted by force' and that Ukraine should decide its own fate 'independently and autonomously'.
Meanwhile, on the front lines, few Ukrainian soldiers believe there is an end in sight to the war, other than a brief respite before Moscow resumes its attacks with even greater might.

Multi-millionaire property mogul Mikhail Kenin was apparently healthy and his cause of death has not been officially disclosed. The 'preliminary assessment' of doctors was that he suffered 'acute heart failure' according to business news paper Vedomosti. His is the latest in a series of mysterious deaths of leading figures in Russia since shortly before the start of the war against Ukraine. Reports have linked Mr Kenin to Putin's defence minister at the start of the war, Sergei Shoigu. It comes as a woman vanishes in car crash - then turns up months later with wild story. Mr Shoigu is now secretary of the Kremlin's powerful security council - but is seen as out of favour with the Russian dictator. Numerous senior Shoigu officials at the defence ministry have been fired or accused of corruption and arrested. His deputy defence minister Timur Ivanov was last month sentenced to 13 years in jail for embezzlement, money laundering, and related corruption charges. Mr Kenin was also linked to the family of wealthy Moscow region governor Andrey Vorobyov. Rumours say the businessman acted as holder of the secret fortunes of some senior Russian officials. He made his fortune from his major stake in Samolet Group, which was at one point worth more than $1 billion. Today there was swirling speculation that the group's valuable assets could be swallowed by in-favour members of the Putin circle. Samolet announced Kenin's death at only 56 without explaining the cause. It said: 'We are sad to confirm that [on Sunday] entrepreneur and investor Mikhail Kenin passed away." The firm said he was 'one of those people who leave their mark on the earth… a rare person, gifted with natural talents, an excellent organiser and successful entrepreneur… ready to take risks and make difficult decisions.' Mr Kenin had created Russia's largest property development firm. It is known he had been trying to dispose of his shares when he mysteriously died. Ukrainian political analyst Ivan Yakovina claimed: 'The Kremlin forbade anyone from buying them. Now, apparently, they will go to new owners for free.' Mr Kenin's heir is apparently his socialite daughter Michelle, 32, a former tennis player, who lives in London and Dubai. Russian independent Telegram channel VChK-OGPU alleged Kenin was a 'nominee of the Shoigu clan'. It said he had 'suddenly passed away' and 'whether this death is accidental or a logical continuation of the company's problems will be revealed over time". It added: 'For a long time, Kenin was unable to sell his share in Samolet, as the investment environment and the negative atmosphere around the company clearly hindered this. 'If Samolet announces its 'landing' [with a new owner] in the near future, no one will be surprised.'

India pushes ahead with US trade talks despite tariff hike to 50%
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI, Aug 11 (Reuters) - India hopes trade talks with the U.S. will continue even as the U.S. hiked tariffs on its exports to 50% due to New Delhi's purchase of sanctioned Russian oil, two lawmakers said on Monday, citing a briefing to a parliamentary panel on foreign affairs. Last week, President Donald Trump imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods due to Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil, bringing the total duty on Indian exports to the U.S. to 50% - among the highest of any American trading partner. "Our relations with the U.S. are multi-dimensional, and should not be seen only through the prism of trade," one of the lawmakers said, citing the foreign secretary's briefing to the panel. Shashi Tharoor, an opposition Congress party leader, who heads the panel, said trade talks would continue. "As of now, there is no change in the existing plans for the sixth round," he said, referring to a scheduled visit of a U.S. trade delegation to New Delhi from August 25. Earlier, junior finance minister, Pankaj Chaudhary told lawmakers that about 55% of India's merchandise exports to the United States would covered by the new tariff. His estimate factored in the initial 25% levy, he said in a written response to a lawmaker's query. "The Department of Commerce is engaged with all stakeholders" for their assessment of the situation, Chaudhary added. Goods trade between the United States and India - the world's biggest and fifth-largest economies, respectively - was worth about $87 billion in the last fiscal year, according to Indian government estimates. The panel separately voiced concerns over Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir's reported remarks on nuclear threats in South Asia during a visit to the U.S. "Nuclear blackmail will not work with India, and no party, or representative disagrees with this view," Tharoor said, adding the external affairs ministry had condemned the comments.
