KUALA NERUS - Although the prices of essentials have gone up, a husband-and-wife team running a food stall continues to serve a variety of dishes at affordable 'rahmah' prices.
Driven by a desire to ease the burden of the less fortunate, Sabarudin Ramli, 42, and his wife, Ajuma' Arasikim Din, 41, are determined to sell 'nasi campur' (mixed rice) with various dishes at just RM5 per serving at their eatery, Nasi Berlauk Juedin. Sabarudin said that although their profit margin is small, he is content knowing that he is able to help his customers, especially those with large families.
"I started this business in 2014 with a budget rice menu priced at RM2.50 from a small stall in Kuala Nerus before we moved to our current location six years ago.
"The 'rahmah' concept was introduced just three weeks ago. Previously, our prices were like any regular eatery. But after many customers shared their struggles with the rising cost of living, my wife and I decided to make a change,' he said when met at his eatery in Kampung Tok Jiring here recently.
Every day, the couple rises at 4am to prepare more than 30 dishes, assisted by four employees.
Among the most popular menu items are ikan patin masak tempoyak, ayam berempah, udang masak lemak cili api, ikan tiga rasa and kerabu pegaga.
For the past three weeks, their eatery has been frequented by customers from Kuala Terengganu, Kuala Nerus and Marang.
"Ever since my eatery went viral on TikTok, we've been getting a non-stop stream of customers. They arrive as early as 10 am to dine in, and many also pack various dishes to take home.
"Alhamdulillah, all our customers are satisfied. Despite the low prices, we never compromise on quality. Many are surprised that seafood dishes like prawns in gravy are priced at just RM4 a plate,' said the father of three.
Sabarudin said their business operates from 10 am to 5pm from Sunday to Thursday.
"But these days, our food runs out quickly. By around 1.30pm, most dishes are already gone, so we have to close early. In the past three weeks, we've been serving about 300 customers a day and had to prepare larger batches of food to avoid disappointing customers,' he said, adding that iced tea and syrup drinks are also sold at just 50 sen per glass.
A customer, Muhammad Asyraf Haniff Zaki, 35, from Manir, said he was pleasantly surprised to find a place still selling mixed rice at RM5 and hoped that other traders would emulate such an initiative.
"Today, I came with my wife. We had two pieces of ayam percik, fried beef, patin tempoyak and ulam-ulaman. We also packed two pieces of chicken in gravy and prawns for our kids.
"I paid only RM30. Usually, for this amount of food, it would be no less than RM50. Definitely worth it,' he said. - BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government has succeeded in reducing annual new debt to RM77 billion in 2024 from RM99 billion in 2022. This, he said, fulfils the government's commitment to more prudent fiscal management, with only the interest payments on old debts yet to be reduced. "The new debt that the government has incurred was RM99 billion in 2022, dropping to RM93 billion in 2023, and in 2024 the total is RM77 billion... that is less. "They say the total amount (of debt) is more, added with the old debt and the interest that we have to pay, but I said the government promised to reduce new debt – we have fulfilled that. "But what is being spread around... we are increasing (the debt), so it is as if we are deceiving the people. If you look at these figures, who is deceiving?" he said when speaking at the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly here today. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said annual new debt had been successfully reduced in line with the drop in the fiscal deficit, while giving the commitment that the government would continue reducing the deficit in stages and responsibly, without affecting national development. He said the government had reduced the country's fiscal deficit from 5.5 per cent in 2022 to 4.1 per cent in 2024, with a target of 3.8 per cent for this year. He explained that the government had opted for a gradual approach so that deficit reduction would not come at the expense of development needs or market confidence. "We took over in 2022. The fiscal deficit at that time was 5.5 per cent. What is a deficit? It means spending exceeds national income, which means we are in debt. "We manage the national economy like a household economy. If the income is RM5,000 but the expenditure is RM7,000, that is a deficit. "So now we are reducing the expenditure to RM6,500, RM6,000, RM5,500. If it drops suddenly, then (development) cannot proceed," he said. The Prime Minister also praised the civil service for its contributions that helped Malaysia jump 11 places in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025 to 23rd position, up from 34th in 2024, driven by improved economic performance and administrative efficiency. In June, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) announced that Malaysia had achieved its best performance since 2020 in the World Competitiveness Ranking (WCR), reflecting progressive momentum in the country's economic recovery and reform agenda. MITI said Malaysia is on track to be among the world's 12 most competitive economies by 2033, in line with the MADANI Economy Framework. Anwar added that the International Monetary Fund, in its Article IV consultation for 2025, had praised Malaysia's commitment to implementing fiscal reforms, including the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA). KUALA LUMPUR: The Auditor General's (AG) Report 2/2025 has recommended several improvements for the subsidised cooking oil programme to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), stating that it should be continued. The report said that KPDN should aggressively monitor the retail price of subsidised cooking oil by collaborating with enforcement agencies such as local authorities to ensure compliance with the RM2.50 per packet price ceiling. "Firm enforcement actions must also be taken immediately against sellers who charge above the controlled price, including imposing fines, revoking licences, and seizing goods," the report said. In addition, it recommended expanding targeted subsidy distribution through programmes like the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) initiative, which provides subsidies via special vouchers for essential goods, including subsidised cooking oil. It said such programmes serve as effective control mechanisms to ensure government aid is used specifically for basic necessities by target groups such as the B40 income group and the hardcore poor. "KPDN should conduct monitoring through a centralised database that records each transaction in real time and enables better detection of any misuse of these special vouchers. "This approach not only increases transparency and accountability, but also ensures that aid reaches those who truly need it," it added. The ministry was also advised to regularly review and improve the standard operating procedures (SOPs) of the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme (COSS) to address existing implementation gaps, including the management of damaged cooking oil and halal certification monitoring. KPDN should also introduce a targeted distribution policy to ensure subsidies are only given to eligible households based on specific criteria, with data referring to existing sources such as the eKasih and Padu databases. "This measure is aimed at preventing access to subsidies by foreign nationals or commercial entities that are not eligible. "The purchase limit for subsidised cooking oil should also be reviewed to match actual household needs and to prevent large-scale purchases for commercial use, which fall outside the intended policy scope," it said. The ministry should also revisit current regulations to better enforce compliance by licence holders, including suspending or revoking the Controlled Goods Retail Licence (CSA) of those found violating licence terms, such as holding two licences under the same address. Among other recommendations is the comprehensive use of the digital system eCOSS to monitor real-time records of subsidised cooking oil sales and distribution, helping to reduce data manipulation and non-compliance. "KPDN must also require all subsidised cooking oil packaging companies to obtain halal certification as a licensing condition, and take legal action under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 (Act 730) against companies using counterfeit halal logos," the report said. It also called for KPDN to develop a comprehensive management procedure for damaged cooking oil, covering disposal methods, early detection, prohibition of repackaging, mandatory declaration of damaged oil, and reporting to KPDN for monitoring and record-keeping purposes.

KUALA LUMPUR: The volume of 'buy now, pay later' (BNPL) transactions in Malaysia surged to 102.6 million in the first half of 2025, up from 83.8 million in the second half of 2024. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying highlighted concerns over rising consumer risks, particularly among low-income groups with limited financial literacy. The total value of BNPL transactions increased by 31 per cent, reaching RM9.3 billion in 1H 2025 compared to RM7.1 billion in 2H 2024. Active BNPL accounts also rose from 5.1 million at the end of 2024 to 6.5 million by June 2025. To address these risks, the government is establishing the Consumer Credit Commission (SKP) under the Consumer Credit Act. Lim stated, 'The commission will regulate currently unregulated sectors through a licensing and registration framework.' The Consumer Credit Bill 2025 aims to protect consumers by ensuring responsible lending practices and promoting a fair credit industry. Lim added, 'This bill reflects the government's commitment to a safer credit ecosystem.' - Bernama
